[#1967] Any classical fans here? Brother Kei, I don't have so many versions of Richard Strauss 4 Last Songs. I only have Schwarzkopf/Szell version. How's the other compare to this one? Which one will you recommend? To fellow classical fans: I bought Rostropovich's Bach Cello Suite DVD. It's a new release in this format. First seen it in HMV Central, then I bought it at A&B Sound in Tsing Yi. Information here: http://www.emicatalogue.co.nz/Discography.aspx?artist=3990&product=130213 Picture: ![]()

[#1968] Any classical fans here? DL, I only had some brief listening to the 7 Four Last Songs that I just borrowed. But then all are good performance, some are great and some are not so great. I think I can group them according to my preference: Excellent: 1. Schwarzkopf/Szell 2. Jessye Norman/Masur 2. Te Kanawa/Solti Nearly Excellent: 4. Della Casa/Bohm 4. Schwarzkopf/Szell 4. Popp/Tennstedt Extremely Good: 7. Studer/Sinopoli 7. Mattila/Abbado Very Good: 9. Janowitz/ Karajan 10. Lott/Jarvi

| [#1969] Any classical fans here? I recently came across Cheryl Studer's Four Last Songs and like it much. Tempi is comparably fast but not hurry. Studer's voice is pure, more feminine, lyrical enough to give wonderful pianissimo but also capable of sheer solid forte. Her interpretation is also first rate. I would rate her in the same rank with Jessye Norman, at least.... :) The champion is still Schwarzkopf/ Szell. Karita Mattila is a stunning soprano. The attached is a wonderful disc, she sings czech, german, italian and russian. The roles ranges from lyrical Puccini to dramatic Wagner. Oh, my god! Hope to listen to her 4 last songs. | [#1970] Any classical fans here? Hi JT, But in fact in the first song ("Fruhling") Studer sang seriously flat in many instances. Also she sang a note different from the score, which I couldn't remember where it was. I don't know why the producer would allow this recording to be released with these serious problems. She wasn't flat in other tracks, so I would rate her better without those problems. Sinopoli drew a super detailed account from Staastkapelle Dresden, the authentic Straussian orchestra. I would write a detailed article of these Four Last Songs recordings in later times, which I may share with you privately in the future. Actually Karita Mattila just completed a series of excellent Salome in the Metropolitan. I hope her performance would show up on DVD some time later, or better if a studio recording would be scheduled (very unlikely though). |

[#1971] Any classical fans here? Brother Kei, ^^, IC. DL, Is the Bach DVD good? I have read a critic about the following recording, which says.... "If it had to be Barbara, why not Bonney"... HAHA. go for music>>>>> R. Strauss/ Der Rosenkavalier Te Kanawa, Von Otter, Hendricks, Rydl, Leech/ Staatskapelle Dresden/ conducted by Bernard Haitink ![]()

[#1972] Any classical fans here? I have to apologize to Ms Studer for saying wrongly that she sang notes different from the score in her recording. That should be Ms Janowitz, in "Fruhling". JT, Did Bonney record a complete Sophie? I just knew she recorded an excerpt in one of her compilations. Hendricks is THE most hated sopranos of mine, because she at times sang horribly while also seriously overrated. Her Faure lieder recording is by far the most disgusting music I heard from all the large classical labels. Sorry for using these strong words. I have to be fair to her to add that, she occasionally did an acceptable job in operas, though. Occasionally, and acceptable only.

[#1973] Any classical fans here? Brother Kei, DL etc: I am very happy here so many people here love the 4 last songs. It is one of my absolute favorite vocal piece. Scharwkopf/Szell cannot be touched, for its interpretive power as well as the very best recording quality. And it is available in re-issue LP!!!! And the original LP is quite cheap too! Some reasons why this version is non-pareil: Scharwkopf and Szell were both central Europeans and know their Strauss, so it is very authentic to the last degree, full of nuance. I cannot agreee with Brother Kei about some of the rankings. I think Jesse Norman is very powerful but she has no Viennese feel, As a matter of fact she sings "gloriously" in anything, but everything sounds the same. NOT an interpretive "artist". Even worse in Kiri. Totally bland. A bad singer in my opinion. Of course I am in the interpretive/mannered Callas/Scharwkopf school. For glorious singing I'd rate the creamy Janowitz (in her prime) way above Norman and Kiri. Yes, she is still bland compared with Schwarzkopf, BUT still something authetic and Straussian there. Finally, Schwarzkopf made another MONO recording of this piece with Ackerman as conductor. It is a safer recording, less idiosyncratic, but I still prefer the one with Szell. A true desert island record.

[#1974] Any classical fans here? doclowther, It seems we have a significant difference in terms of taste! Still couldn't agree with you on Kiri and Janowitz though! The fault of the Janowitz recording mainly lies on Karajan's obssessive orchestral playing, not spontaneous enough for my taste. Marks lost mainly through the conductor. As for Kiri, she is always a role model in vocal study. I really don't see she's bland. This Strauss lieder recital demonstrated how she could use so little manner to convey so much emotions. Recently I'm not into manners as I'm asked by my vocal teacher to drop them completely! :-p Jessye Norman's case is to be agreed without reservation, so is Schwarzkopf's but then despite being a big fan of her I don't quite like her older recording. Norman is always controversial, and to be honest she's one of the sopranos that I don't like (not the hate of Hendricks though). But then I don't know why I'm shot dead by her Four Last Songs. There's a noble dignitiy in her singing that moved me. Of course, basically Norman cannot possess that Viennese quality as her vocal technique prevents her so. We may have some private discussion on this if you want, since I can't tell too much details on web. Finally, I want to thank you for your input. You reminded me to be more careful in my article. I shall revisit all the ten CDs again. Though our opinion can't be the same, but then that's what makes the discussion interesting!
