The tempo of Cluytens in Beethoven's symphony NO. 7 was very nature and flowing, unlike Carlos Kleiber which may found rush sometimes.

同樣是偏緩的穩定速度，晚年的klemperer就讓人有dragging的沈悶感覺。

Today marks the birthday of one of the greatest composers of the 20th century - the Deng Xiao Ping of composers. It is empathetically difficult being a creative artist in the communist world where artistic genius, creativity freedom and the "will of the State" are rarely reconcilable. Shostakovich went in and out of favour with the Krelim several times, correspondingly he went in and out of periods of his creative genius. He was made deputy to the Supreme Soviet, the highest political status a musician had achieved, only to be compared by Paderewski. Many praise his earlier works like Symphony #1, the Nose, piano concerto #1 etc. and condemn that he never wrote another note of genius after Stalin's denunciation. Others hails his symphony #5, #7 and his most beautiful string quartets which started well after the attack. I believe these are the paradox of his trying to get along with the party and his ever flaming passion of his country.

I would not play anything today other than Shostakovich (I was supposed to revisit Der Rosenkvalier to prepare for the concert on Thursday). Here's another "authentic" interpretation of some of his lesser known works. Tatiana Nikolayeva is a personal friend of Shostakovich and the inspiration of which he composed the 24 preludes and fugues.

Last night, finally come to Beethoven's symphony No.9 by Andre Cluytens.

When I look at the total time of the disc which last for 73 minutes, I suspected it may be a recording in the style of Klemperer or Furtwangler, but once again the nature phasing and the lively enegetic playing of Cluytens stole the limelight. Although the tempo was board, the tension in the music was well sustained. The quartet of soloist was not top notch but serviceble, but they simply cannot compare with the choir singing of Szell's recording whose concert master was Robert Shaw.

Cluytens complete set of Beethoven was the most even I have ever encountered in my limited experience, I think the conducting of Cluytens was superior to Wand's set who may sound drag and boring sometimes. Zinman sound anaemic and rush when compare with Cluytens, who can make the music sound enegertic with a borad and flowing tempo. All in all, a very satisfying set.

這張CD都是來自歐洲鋼琴家到日本演出，為RCA的日本分公司錄的LP。Demus與Badura-Skoda及Gulda為奧地利戰後的鋼琴三劍俠（Brendel雖然屬同一代，但到五六十年代才紅，那三人在四十年代尾，剛打完仗就成名了。），也肩負宣揚正宗莫扎特的責任。Demus的演奏，給人異常寧靜的感覺，但並不是音量上的寧靜：他將聲部分得很清楚，低音雖有不同顏色，但殘響及泛音被壓@，他保持音色的柔和，卻不會將Gulda彈得那麼乾

來自意大利的Canino卻是另一種發音，他不會避用踏板，用很滿的現代鋼琴音色來彈。他也將那四首小曲彈得蠻有趣味，也帶幾分刺激，與Demus較克制的彈法相當不同。但論開耳界，Demus反而更堪回味。

這些錄音來自兩張LP，但都沒有完全收錄：Demus部分少了K.475幻想曲，Canino的莫扎特應該只是LP的一面，另外還有四首日本作曲家的鋼琴曲。

Plenty.

The best known (of the past) is Clara (Wieck) Schumann. Followed maybe by Fanny Mendelssohn, Amy Beach, Lili Boulanger etc.

Of living ones, The Russian Sofiya Gubaydulina is my favorite, followed by the Finn Kaija Saariaho.

I recommend this NAXOS CD.
