The only authentic Bach can only come from Landowska, as her famous saying, "you can play Bach your way, but I play him his way"!

The Polish harpsichordist Wanda Landowska (1879-1959) was hugely influential in modern harpsichord playing and in the instrument's twentieth-century revival. She also held strong views on the way Bach should be interpreted. Confronted one day by a harpsichordist with opposing views she was soon locked in heated discussion. Finally, Landowska extricated herself from the no-win situation: "Well, my dear", she said, "you play Bach YOUR way, and I'll continue to play him HIS way."

If I just want to buy one CD for the best version of Beethoven Symphony No. 9 instead of the whole collection, whihc one I can buy please ? I bought one just now by EMI Classics - The Karajan Collection , but the recording was so flat..

Can brothers tell me a better one pls?

Got it. Is it that one from Andre Cluytens ? I am new to classical music. My friend told me that this Symphony No. 9 can really touch my heart. I just finished listening to it once (67 minutes ) though I dislike the recording.

Could you be kind enough to give me some hints and guideline how to appreciate this master piece ? Which part touches you most ?

The writing of Romain Rolland, the Nobel Laureate of literature, on Beethoven's #9 has the most vivid, figurative description of one's ecstasy on the symphony :

He is not the shepherd driving his flock before him; he is the bull marching at the head of his herd................In painting his portrait, I paint that of his stock - our century, our dream, ourselves.......Joy. Not the gross joy of the soul that gorges itself in its stable, but the joy of ordeal, of pain, of battle, of suffering overcome, of victory over one's self, the joy of destiny subdued, espoused.......And the great bull with its fierce eye, its head raised, its four hooves planted on the summit, at the edge of the abyss, whose roar is heard above the time..................

In general concenus, Furtwangler 1954 philharmonia on Tahra and Furtwangler's 1951 live recording conducting the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Elisabeth Hongen, Otto Edelmann was considered to be the best. But both are in Mono sound.

If you want modern stereo recording you may consider Karajan's 1977 version.
