[#1293] Quad ESL Don't worry of your ESL, dkyyu. According to my wife, I treat my hifi better than her and our son and up to now we still have no indication of divoice etc. Well, it is hard to say after tomorrow......

[#1296] Quad ESL I confess I've done absolutely nothing except using my ears. Patrick's done a great operation doing the heart transplant and the patient was singing the next second. Poor Dennis was under pressure to strip his darling Quad in front of us but he apparantly enjoyed doing that from the way he violently tore down the cloth. The cloth is just good enough for 2 pcs of napkin for the baby but cost GBP20 from OTA.

[#1299] Quad treble panels compare An interesting article. Thanks jcml. I really have to open up my Quad and see what's inside. I note my Quad seems to be a restoration rather than a rebuilt.

[#1304] Quad ESL Sure Dennis. I will be free this coming Thursday. I have spoken to CP. He will join us if he got no other appointmnt. Most likely the problem is in the cancellation of sound wave due to wrong phase connected. Anyway, we will check the voltage may as well. Regds

[#1306] Quad ESL jcml, 007 and 008 are coming to save the Queen. I saw Patrick spending lot of time to treat the bare wires before soldering to the panel connection. There was another chap, Edmund, I witness who spent same level of patience and care when carrying out similar soldering work. Very careful and detail craftmanship with hell lot of patience putting into the job. What more can I say to these people?

[#1308] Quad ESL Limage, Good day. My first impression on the OTA ESL is that it sounds pretty similar (90% to my ears) to the original ones with slightly more weight in bass and a bit more hi-fi feel than the original. Regarding the sound quality, I guess the new OTA ESL is 10% to 20% behind and the bass is not as mellow as the original ESL yet possibly due to brand new panels and overall low burn-in hours. I guess more noticeable improvement will be noted after this Thursday. Surely my pleasure to invite all dear panel speaker friends to come for sharing the voice of OTA once my tonearm and ESL are ready. You know I am not keen on CD and I shall only entertain my VIP with vinyl.

[#1309] Quad ESL Tim, Iimage, CP et al May I seek yr expertise advice on rectifier tubes. What is different between CV-378, 5AR4, 5U4-GB and 5R4? Are they physically and functionally interchangeable? The question arisen after I've acquired a Cary CAD-300SE Sig version and found they have so many versions using all different rectifiers. Thanks Patrick

[#1310] Quad ESL Patrick, They are all GZ34 type rectifiers, electrically similar but not exactly identical, almost interchangeable since they have the same heater voltage (5V) but slightly different heater current (1.9A~3.0A) so some more demanding on the power transformer. Anode voltage varies from 450V to 750V so check the voltage on your amp. The best that you can use is of course the Cossor 53KU. You can find all their electrical properties at this site. http://www.r-type.org/inx/name.htm

[#1311] Quad ESL Patrick GZ34 http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aaa0013.htm Different brandnames Many rectifier tubes have been made by the Philips company. All I know are of outstanding quality. Many tubes from which I knew that they worked for many years still test as new tubes. All tubes have the following common charecteristics (except where otherwise noted): - 6 square holes in each plate - center hole in guiding pin - 5 pin connector on octal socket http://www.tube-classics.de/TC/Tubes/Valvo%20GZ34/GZ34.htm There are a lot of Philips GZ34 tubes with Siemens or Telefunken logo, but I have never seen any GZ34 from Siemens or Telefunken production. http://www.tube-classics.de/TC/Tubes/SieTel%20GZ34/GZ34.htm

[#1312] Quad ESL Many rectifier tubes have been made --------------------------- Thanks guys......So far I am happy with the sound of my Cary. I am just curious why other Cary used that good looking 5R4 tube with a big, fat, over sized base, and mine used this little tiny 5U4GB. It's not fair! It's not fair!!

[#1316] Quad ESL CP......The resistor we talk about in between the EHT and the treble panel should read 150K per Steve of One Thing Audio. QTE: check the resistors in series with the OUTER strips of the treble panels (these should read 150K More: one other small point to mention to your engineer. If he is using a conventional HT probe, the readings he will get will be approximately 20% lower than the actual readings. This is because the probe has its own internal resistance and this will cause the rectifier to 'under-read'. You will only register the correct readings if you use an electrostatic volt meter - buit a probe will do, as long as you allow for the under-readings! Steve. UNQTE

[#1317] Quad ESL CV378, 5AR4, 5U4GB and 5R4 are all DIFFERENT rectifiers and none of them are electrically the same. CV378 is a indirect heated rectifier designed to replace the direct heated 5U4G. It can work in all 5U4G application and should prolong the life of other tubes used in the amp due to the "delay start" feature of indirect heated rectifier. CV378 are made by Cossor (=53KU/U54) and Mullard (=GZ37) only. 5AR4 is known as GZ34 in Europe. It is a indirect heated rectifier introduced as the same time as EL34 by Philip. It is NOT the same as CV378 or 5U4G and generally CANNOT be used to replace them or vice versa as they have different current drawn and voltage drop. 5U4GB is a later version of 5U4G and sound absolutely shit. Avoid at all cost. 5R4 has a direct heated rectifier with higher current/voltage rating compare to the 5U4G. It can take a much higher B+ up to 750V. It generally does not sound too good for lower voltage B+ applications as it is not working in its design range.

[#1319] Quad ESL Service manual CV378, 5AR4, 5U4GB and 5R4 are all DIFFERENT rectifiers and none of them are electrically the same --------------------------------- Tim......Many thanks for yr detailed advice. I am currently using 5U4-GB with B+ 430VDC. Am I to understand that: 1. I can replace 5U4-GB with CV378. 2. I can NOT replace 5U4-GB with 5AR4 or GZ34. 3. I can replace 5U4-GB with 5R4 but it is not desireable due to low B+ voltage. Regards
