| 打做我的影音天地...... This is a story of how a man turns his dream into reality, trying to build up a 2 channel audio system, together with a home theater the whole family can enjoy. Yet, it has to meet the family's expectation to blend in with a modern minimalist design theme and functional home settings. It is indeed a challenging job. The man I referred to is me.....simcity. Friends who have known me personally surely realize I was vaporized during the year 2007. Indeed, for the whole year, my mind has been set on one target alone. That is the determination to turn this dream into reality. Today, the whole project has finally reached the final stage and I am more than happy to share the joy, the difficulties and the experience to all my friends. To put it simple and straight forward, I would try using photos to illustrate the whole process, including the renovation work. I am glad that it's all over now cause this project has probably shortened my lifespan due to the frustrations and tiredness during the process and just hope it provides some insight for others having similar dreams too OK, let the journey begins………………  |

Let me bring you all back some time ago to my previous listening room. It was a 700sq feet flat with a L-shaped living room. I soon pick up the old interest of HiFi listening which was left behind for over 10 years. I still remember the first system in this flat is using ProAc studio speakers, audio synthesis amps and sony X5000 CD players. Then it came the 2nd system using Focus Audio FS78s, meridian CDP, Ayre K3 & V3 amps, which is very common during those days.  |

| 回覆(6): 打做我的影音天地...... Since the distance between the two walls has only 9 feet, the soundstage is very upfront and bass management is a severe problem. A set of large sofas are used to soap up some bass frequency without much success.  |

With the arrival of this highly revealing bookshelf, I started to investigate the effect of speaker placement, and soon realize it is a paramount factor for tuning up a good system.  |

| 回覆(8): 打做我的影音天地...... The MU is actually very musical and fit perfectly for my room size. But after two years of French romance with the JMlab, It's tempting to change the lover once again. This time I opt for the dynaudio 25th anniversary bookshelf speaker. Someone might remember it has created a stir when first introduced. But frankly speaking, that was a wrong move which eventually created a lot of headache in the coming years.  |

| 回覆(9): 打做我的影音天地...... You may not believe the main problem of the Dyna 25th speaker is actually its size! It looks like a bookshelf but it needs "huge" space in terms of room placement. The bass quantity is enormous but the esoter2 treble unit can be very shouty at times. So you either control the bass to reduce booming using a high damping amp or soften the treble by using a tube amp. Neither way can solve the problem.  |

I started studying the effect on all sorts of accoustic treatment, started changing a dozen more CD players and then another dozen more amplifiers and still knowing the right direction. At one time, the whole living room was piled up with different gears waiting to be connected. Thinking back now, that was the darkest moment for me as an audiophile.  |

I should have replaced the speaker for the first instance instead of spending so much money, time and efford without any progress. But men are universal. We all want to take up the challenge, even knowing it cannot be accomplished. For more than two years, I've changed more gears than I could remember and eventually, the speaker was finally been replaced! So what have I learned? Yes, I lot. Accept the truth that if a speaker is not right for your room accoustically, it's your destiny......full stop. Just don't border anymore :) Hay, I am freeman once again............  |

Hi brother kapak, raychow830 and ho_r33, Yes, probably my family members know I have gone mad and don't bother to excite me any further:) Ray, you ask if "Dynaudio 真係噤靚聲??" is also my question too at that time. Put it fairly, the Dyna 25th bookshelf is a good speaker in its own sense. It's comparatively cheap ($25000 brand new), it is revealing, it has thrilling bass and it has a brand history. The only mistake that I have made was underestimating the space required for the bass unit to breathe normally. I sold it to a friend who owns a larger room and immediately I realized it out perform my place for 3 folds! Today, I still consider dynaudio can produce some of the best treble and bass units but other manufacturers who utilize their components seems to have a better execution in the final products. Looking at your room - do you try to use Bass Trap, Corner Trap and other more effective Aborption/Diffusion device? Skyline is not useful at all for bass control. My room is similar in size to your and I use a 5 ways speaker(MBL 111) with 12" woofer without booming problem so maybe you can give it a try. The problem is not with the speaker or amp - it's the room. Jeff |

Brother Jeff, you are absolutely right. I did use two RPG bass traps later on and it improve significantly. But the Dyna has gone so I could not verify this. BTW, I would like visiting your place too if given a chance. I suppose there are not many MBL speaker systems in HK. Do you know Alan who use MBL speaker too? Brother TaiC and 飛機陳, thank you and welcome to my place too. Just promise not to laugh at me:) Brother foxtan, I agree that room accoustic and speaker matching with the room are critical, but easily ignored by many audiophiles. Brother promet, they are RPG skyline diffusers, which is primarily used on the ceilings. My previous flat was too small for such usage so I put them on the wall instead. A replica can be bought in Mongkok for $100 each. tony san, haha, I need to say little at a time or the topic is finished in 2 days. The white sheet is just tissue paper for cleaning the speaker before taking photos. But you may notice I have put a dispersion device on the Dyna 25th treble unit to improve the imaging. |

| 回覆(32): 打做我的影音天地...... 小張 hing, It was connected to a Conrad Johnson preamp in which the output signal is phase inverted . So I need to recorrect it by reversing the phase once again. But..... I was using the wrong method. The cable terminal should be inverted at the power amplifier's terminal, not at the speaker side. It still works but need to run in the speaker cable all over again. |

This brand is deeply rooted in the heart of audiophiles from different generations and is still hugely popular as in the old days. Excellent in musicality, smooth midrange and easy listening are just a few of its hallmark sound. I started with a relatively cheap N804 and still sings.  |
