[#1883] 打做我的影音天地...... As much as I love BMW bikes, BMW are also the topgun in manufacturing vehicles with four wheels. And the slogan "Ultimate Driving Machines" has put forth their philosophy in making cars. Out of their current car production series, the M3 is my favourite. Now at E90 and E92 (coupe) generation, engine has been upgraded to V8 and 400 horse power!! ![]()

[#1884] 打做我的影音天地...... Interior of the current M3 4door. A bit bland and dull in my opinion, but still efficient and with excellent driving position. Gearbox is totally new with dual clutch sequential type. To me, a proper sports car has to be manual, with a "stick" on it. Other option is too compromised. HaHa, May be I am still on the old school philosophy :) ![]()

[#1885] 打做我的影音天地...... Talking about BMW M3, it is no stranger to me. Six years' ago, I had a chance owning the previous generation (E46) M3 coupe in manual transmission form. This E46 M3 is a real legend and to most car journalist, it was the most balanced M3 among all generations, including the current E92. Specification wise, it is a wild beast, with 334ps horse power and 0-60 miles in 4.8secs. But the trump card is it's overall feel and handling characteristics. It's a completely different breed to all ordinary BMW vehicles. The sound is like a race car and power delivery at 8200rpm is overwhelming. The rear end is so lively that power drift is possible even in a dry road. The chassis is extremely rigid like casted from a solid rock. And the rear M differential lock can distribute optimal traction to individual rear wheels by a seperate computer........Yes, it's a real beast yet very safe and very entertaining. In my opinion, it's one of the most balanced high performance vehicles BMW has ever produced in recent history. A magic vehicle! ![]()

[#1887] 打做我的影音天地...... Every car euthusiast know BMW engines are the best among volume car manufacturers. And this 3.2 l straight six naturally aspirated engine from the M3 is the best of the best. With 6 individual throttle bodies and forged crankshalf, it can rev up to 8200 rpm and produce 334 hp max power. What an engineering masterpiece! ![]()

[#1889] 打做我的影音天地...... It's an overwhelming experience driving the M3. The sound of the engine, the exhaust note, the instant response of the throttle, supreme handling, suffocating acceleration and ease of control are just part of the experience. You can even alter ECU programming on the engine power and throttle response at a touch of a switch! But are there any weaknesses or shortfalls with the M3? The answer is definitely "yes" and that can also be applicable for any commercial product in the world (HiFi gears included). 1. The car is too fast most of the time and there's not enough road here in HK. Of course you can drive very slowly but it will be damn boring under 100km/hr. 2. Although it has achieved 50:50 percent weight distribution, the mighty cast iron constuction engine is pretty heavy in modern standard. So attacking the slow speed corners in "Shek O" may cause excessive understeer. Solution? I installed an upmarket suspension set(springs + dampers) tailered for the M3 by AC Schnitzer and pretty much rectified the problem. 3. The sitting position is slightly high for such a sporty vehicle. You find yourself sitting "above" the seat rather than "on" the seat and the bulges from the sport seat has constantly prevent smooth motion in changing gears. The steering wheel grip is also too fat for most Asian size. 4. The brakes are very much inadequate for such a high performance car. Generally speaking, BMW has the best "braking power" and "braking feel" among all high volume cars, superceding Mercedes and Audi. But this is a 334ps car! Two continuous 2xx km hard braking test is its limit. And for the 3rd time, the whole car will shiver. The forth time, you have no brake. Some will alter the brake, changing to 4 pistons or even 6 pistons caliper assembly like Brembo or AP brakes. But I know many guys feeling deeply regretful after doing so. 1st of all, the master brake cylindar may not be compatible. 2nd, those super high performance brakes are mainly for track use, modulating them in the street is extremely difficult. You end up having no brake or too much braking force. And the inconsistent feel comparing to the clutch and throttle pedals will only create confusion, with the result of driving even slower and more dangerous. I did change some racing brake pads but the result is not wholely convincing. 5. My car came with the optional "forged" 19 inch alloy wheels. Aluminium alloy wheel is usually made by casting process but it has many void and affecting the strength. Forging is the term for shaping metal by using localized compressive force, up to a few thousand ton pressure to hammer a molden metal to make a super strong structure. Each 19 inch forged wheel can cause over $10k without tire. It looks very impressive but the ride is kidney crushing hard!! I eventually change back to the OEM 18 inch wheels. Sacrifice a bit of look, but the ride is much more compliant as an everyday car. 6. The manual gearshift quality is not up to the highest quality as for example the Porsche 997. But as a $700,000 vehicle, it's totally acceptable. Still, it's better to accept this slight imperfection than going for the SMG option (sequential manual gearbox). That was a joke! (although I do understand those who cannot manage a manual gearshift has no choice but to accept this option). 7. And lastly, it's still a BMW. You won't have the sense of occasion driving for example a Porsche boxster for a similar price. A porsche is a proper sports car while the M3 is a very very fast 3 series. So will 7 shortcomings make this a bad car? "NO" once again. Frankly, the E46 M3 is so balance and almost perfect in its own class, letting the Audi RS4 (1st gen) and Mercedes C32 eating dust! Even BMW itself cannot follow the glory and success built up by the E46 M3 in its newest (E92) M3, eclipsed by the new Mercedes C63 and Audi's 2nd gen RS4. Enough is enough and most probably I will not own such a powerful car in the near future anymore. But at $750,000 HKD (6 yrs ago) including options and accessories, the E46 M3 coupe is one of the best valued and most balanced "fast" cars of the modern era, and surely it will be remembered in my life time ^__^ ![]()

[#1899] 打做我的影音天地...... Hi pete7013, I am so pleased you enjoy reading my postings ^__^. Time flies and it's one whole year (started July 2008) since I started this thread "打做我的影音天地......". It was originally planned for a short sharing session on how I built up my dream HiFi and AV centre when I moved into the current flat 2 yr's ago. Being an audiophile, our peculiar interest not only occupy quite an substantial amount of space but also produce quite a lot of "noise" & "interference" to our family members and to our neighbours. It was my upmost challange to renovate a harmonious home which make eveyone in the family "Happy". But if you have followed the content starting from day 1, there's nothing about the renovation, only HiFI and Cars and bikes too. So it has probably gone a bit too far from my original intention. However, I soon realized this thread has becoming a talking point among many audiophiles in town, and particularly I have received numerous PM from all walks of life with encouragement and support. So at this moment on the 1st anniversary, may I take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to all the readers of this thread and our webmaster "Gary" and "Sam" who has done a great job in creating the R33 platform for us!! Remember, HiFi is about music, and HiFi is about passion. So let the fire of passion continues to ignite our heart in the roads ahead, both in good times as well as difficult times ^__^ ![]()

[#1900] 打做我的影音天地...... And dear brothers, some statistical figures for your reference too. This is a chart taken out from the photo upload provider "photobucket", which stored all my photos shared in this particular thread. As you can see from the upper chart, the photos upload fz are averaged around 200000 times every month. And the figure on the left saying the "total file views" of the past 6 months are 1.38 million times, which make up to around 2.76 million times for the past year since I started this thread on July 2008!! 2.76 million times of total photo viewing rate are definitely an incredible figure. And this miracle is created all due to your support, which make an ordinary person like me to achieve something almost impossible. So please let me say Thanks once again! ![]()

[#1901] 打做我的影音天地...... Hi fomhk, you asked about the passlab phono sometime ago. Yes, it is indeed very userfriendly. The newest XP-15 is replacing the legendary Xono which was launched 10 yrs ago. With the old Xono, you need to open the case for adjustments while the 3rd generation XP-15 has all the switches at the back. Lowest gain is 40db (for MM). MC gain is 52, 62 or 72 db (RCA output). MC gain for xlr balance output is 556db, 66db and 76 db respectively. So it can accept even the lowest output MC cartridge of ~0.1 mv without the use of MC transformer. As for the MC loading adjustments, it has 256 settings up to 47k ohm, so there is no excuse for not finding the optimal figure :) Another interesting fact about the pass lab phono is its designer. It's designed by Wayne Colburn rather than Nelson Pass himself. ![]()

[#1903] 打做我的影音天地...... Hi brother coherence, you asked about the differences between the Accuphase and the Passlab. There is no easy answer to this. I realize in the "Vinyl World", the game of matching & setting are probably more important than absolute performance of individual equipment. Both phonos represent the pinnacle of today's transistor phono amp design. Still, you can here the subtle differences. The C27 ($45000 hkd) has all the hallmark sound of the highest grade Accuphase. Supremely refined, delicate and smooth, yet with excellent bass. On the other hand, the XP-15 ($32000HKD) is easily palpable yet containing all the important virtures of music reproduction like harmonics, musicality and fz extension at both extremes. Besides, it is much more flexible with numerous loading adjustments. $32000 can be pretty cheap comparing to a Boulder or FM acoustic phonos but damn expensive comparing to a project Phono. It's all relative. To me, it's a no brainer at this price, a real bargain! A shot of the interior layout...... ![]()
