| [#1] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) in a SIMPLE way While I enjoyed very much reading the thread "最勁 HTPC 有可能靚聲過 CD 機嗎?", I found that discussion is going too complicated with the HTPC set up. There must be a easier way to make computer as source. I think eeePC is one way to make CAS easy with audiophile audio performance. eeePC with SSD storage is so quiet that it does not require much tweak to give a quiet digital source. For the low end, eeePC 901 + USB Monica is not costing much. For the higher end, eeePC 901 + Benchmark DAC1 USB + cable tweak (Opticis Optical USB Cable + TOD1) will meet more experienced and demanding audiophile. Software: cPlay gives the best audiop performance I tried so far. ASIO4ALL is a must and it is easy to install. foobar 0.8.x is very good (foobar 0.9.x is not good in audio performance). foobar 0.8.x needs a ASIO plug-in from Otachan to make it support ASIO. EAC - Exact Audio Copy is excellent way to copy CDs. One may use other ripping software as well. It is great that all the above software are freeware. You don't need to pay for these excellent software. I hope we start a SIMPLE Audiophile Computer As Source discussion here. Don't make it too complicated. Just like eeePC, it should be easy for everybody. |

It would be more beneficial to more people if things can be made easier or there is a conclusion from those HTPC discussion experience so that one goes out to buy a eeepc, download some software, get an exteral harddisk for storage, buy a DAC, set a few things up and then up and flying. |

| [#4] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) 我也是用eeepc當 CAS，也另外diy HTPC 。其實二者是不同的動物，一個以方便為主，一個就有很大空間讓用者選擇、追求完美。 補充一點，用eeepc當CAS 不一定限死用USB DAC，買個USB-spdif converter就可以，USB monica 其實也不便宜，這個價錢可以在內地買到更好的DAC.另, ASIO4ALL 出了新 version, 2.9 beta2 |

Reason I mention USB DAC is to make it simple for everybody. A good SPDIF cable can be expensive. Getting SPDIF in the middle will not give any benefit to audio. In fact, it creates a potential performance bottleneck. If CAS is what we want, then better use a DAC design for CAS which include USB interface to make it really simple for everybody. That is the reason I'm not interested in the professional sound card or USB to SPDIF converter etc. |

| [#11] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) drcy, to asnwer your question, it is going to make this thread going to be another technical discussion deviated from the original purpose. My understand is that most DAC internal digital signal standard is I2S. When we connect SPDIF to DAC, it will be convereted to I2S. If my output is USB, I want a DAC which accept USB and convert to I2S directly internally. I don't want it to be converted to SPDIF and then from SPDIF to I2S. Each conversion is not going to perfect. We better minimize conversion to get better sound. Please tell me what is the value of SPDIF if there are plenty of DAC already support USB directly??? I'll consider such converter if I already own a DAC without USB support. I have no choice. But if I buy a new DAC which is for the purpose of connecting to eeePC, I would not consider any DAC without USB support. By the way, I have used SPDIF before (non pc audio setup) and I own 4 coaxial cables from HK$100 and HK$3,000. SPDIF signal is sensitive to the cable quality. A good cable really make a different. Why I spend $ on SPDIF if it is not helping me improve the sound? |

I would avoid these products which did not spend effort to design their product to optimize for USB. |
