hercules,

is it each buffalo ii dac board can be configured to single channel?

then you will have much better performabce with buffalo II x2?

Hercules Ching,

If you are interested in compare the W4S DAC-2 with 202 or 750D, please let me know, I can bring my dac-2 over.

Hi syklab, I wonder if you have connected your DAC2 directly to power amp and if yes how is it doing, thanks.

syklab hing,

I guess your Wyred4Sound DAC2 may be the only one in HK!
Has it been fully run-in?
Please tell us more about its character & performance.
Is it as good as expected (ESS chip + Asyn USB)?

Many thanks!

Currently my dac-2 is connected to a pre-amp. I have been running the dac-2 since early June for 2-3 hours a day using spdif with the OPPO 83SE Nuforce. The result is more detail and better base control than OPPO even they both use the same chip. This week I started to use the USB interface with my Asus notebook and I do feel that the USB input is a bit better than the OPPO coax input. I am runing Jriver 1.4 on the notebook with XP SP3 and no optimization done on it. I will do more listening this week between OPPO and PC input, also I will start to change some of the parameter see if it makes any different.

syklab hing,

Thanks for your information. I also use JRiver 1.4 for CAS.

Hope that you can compare the DAC2 with other DAC.
Eagerly waiting for your report!

Thanks!

for SPDIF input, if you want to use it built in SPDIF receiver and dejittering clock recovery, you can't use dual mono, you can use dual mono when using external receiver and split into L/R data, and connect to each Buffalo II by I2S.

and the cost is double, the gain of performance probably no more than 10%

hercules c hing,

"
The Buffalo II does not include an output stage but is designed to mate with the IVY III current to voltage
stage. It is not recommended to use the Buffalo II output directly, but it is possible. The output can be used
as a voltage source into a high impedance but THD+N will suffer. THD+N as a voltage source is about -
108db whereas when used with a very low input impedance current to voltage stage such as the IVY-III it
can achieve -120db THD+N in mono mode.
Each analog output at 0DBFS is equivalent to a voltage of approximately 92.4% of AVCC in series with
195. So given 3.3VDC AVCC it will be about 3.05Vpp across 195. The output will be DC biased at
AVCC/2. This works out to about 16ma peak to peak at each output. The amount of bias current will depend
of the voltage of the virtual ground.
In dual mono mode the channel on the DAC which is opposite the selected channel carries the same analog
signal but anti-phase as shown in table 2. This allows the use of the IVY-III as a single differential
(balanced) mono channel. Dual mono operation is used to achieve the best dynamic range. If you still need
single ended output then you would want to add a high quality BAL/SE converter such as the Ballsie Lite or
the Ventus.
For more detail about the IVY-III please check the IVY-III manual.

i think 108dB to 120dB in thd more than 10% improvement

As you said Buffalo x 2 to make dual mono, it's one ESS9018 per Channel (indeed one ESS9018 is 8-ch DAC), so I said it's not going to improve and not so feasible if you want to enjoy it's reclocking.

Buffalo is digital board, when I/V is another board. Please state clear and read twice before you send out.

If you said Dual mono of I/V stage, it make sense, and I have IVY III I/V in my order already.

THD -108dB vs -120dB is using Buffalo II in direct Voltage out WITHOUT I/V stage Vs Current Out mode with I/V conversion.

Dual Mono improves Channel Separation I think.

please understand carefully if 8 dac in a single chip work togather for 1 channel better than single chip for 2 channel

but you can't use the SPDIF receiver bulit-in but external receiver to split I2S L/R Data , you can see Weiss, MCD, W4S only use one chip for 2 channel, I really dobut paying 289(including power supply) more + extra receiver will going to give sound improvement in digital domain.

In Buffalo ESS9018 is 4 DAC per channel already and you have to understand ESS9018 architecture is difference from traditional DAC, so I don't wanna argue with your example, and your Accuphase MDS for using multiple DAC stacking, not separate one chip per channel

i dont think so. lets say combine 2 dac in single chip ad1853 geting 3db improvement

in previous buffalo message 108db to 120db

is it 120db = 4 x 3db + 108 db

no matter whether integrated circuit design (all dac in single chip) or discrete design ( combine different chips )

thats true if yo stack n dac togather, there will be n x 3db improvement

THD -108 vs -120 dB is figure of voltage out mode vs current out with I/V stage.
