回覆(40): Ingrid Haebler's Mozart Hi Eric, I can see you point in preferring Haebler to Perahia for Schubert's impromptus. Haebler's impromptus do not figure in my collection, but my experience informs me that her Schubert's No. 14 sonata does not compare unfavorably with Richter's which I think is supreme. I adore Richter's powerful ego, and the way he keeps his strong impulses in admirable order. Have you tried Haebler's Mozart? I think Mozart suits her personal and musical sensitivities most, particularly in the shorter pieces. I have just compared her rendition of Adagio in B minor, K.540 with Uchida's. However stylish the Japanese may be, Haebler sounds more like the composer's handpicked advocate. Mozart is about the most difficult composer for pianists; for one thing, tonal beauty (an undoubted Perahia's forte) is a mixed blessing. My favourite Haebler CD is: Mozart: Little Piano Pieces Ingrid Haebler [1977] Philips (Super Best 120) PHCP-3593: ADD Although most of the seventeen pieces are familiar ones (Ronda in D, K.485, Adagio in B minor, K.540, Fantasia in D minor, K.397, Ronda in A minor, K.511, and a number of minuets and allegros, etc), Haebler has the knack of: 澹遠韶秀,寄托遙深,性情胸襟,溢於琴音之外,令人詠而三歎,尋味不窮,忘其為熟,轉益見新。 And with the clarity of sound offered by bitstream conversion (whatever that means), this disc is an endless source of pleasure. ![]()

回覆(40): Bella Davidovich Hi Eric, The Saint-Saen 2nd Piano Concerto is available in Disc 1 of a pair of Philips DUO entitled "The Best of Saint-Saens". Your LP also offers a work by Rachmaninov. Is it "Rhapsody" instead of "Variation"? In a pair of Decca CD entitled "The Very Best of Relaxing Classics", there is Davidovich's Variation 18 from "Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, op. 43". Both of them are 1981 digital recordings.

回覆(40): Bella Davidovich Hi Trollope, You are correct. It is Rachmaninoff - Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini Op.43 Below is extracted from the record note: The theme is from the last of Paganini's Caprices Op.1 for unaccompanied violin. There are 24 variations on it, and although they constitute a single whole, they fall into three sections: Nos. 1-10, 11-18, and Nos. 19-24. These gropings have clear overall identities - Nos. 11-18, for example, form the work's slow movement. At the same time they present a continuous argument, and this is aided by an extra element which Rachmaninoff introduces - the Dies Irae.

回覆(40): Borodin Quartet Hi Trazom, I envy your possession of the 4-CD set played by the original Borodin Qt. Correct me if I am wrong, but I have always had this equation in mind: 15 + 15 + 24 = Shostakovich. That is, 15 symphonies, 15 string quartets, and 24 Preludes & Fugues. Are two string quartets missing in your set?

回覆(40): Borodin Quartet Hi Trazom, All the saem, yours is a treasurable set. The original 5-LP Melodiya set released in the early 1960s should be a collector's item. The new Barodin Qt was to record the complete set of all 15, and at one time coupled with the Piano Quintet with Richter on the piano. I don't have that set either. But I have the 1983 Moscow Conservatoire recording of the Piano Quintet (JVC Victor VICC-60008). Very experience. As far as I know, Richter recorded this work with the Borodin in 1966 too. That should, I think, involve the original members. That CD (Intalglio) is a hole awaiting filling-up in my Richter collection.

The N-th-tet question One of the few n-th-tet I've got is the highly 'listenable' and joyful Brahms Quintets. Mine is the Philips DUO version with members of the BPO Octet. The complete Brahms '-tets' on DG's collector's box-set by Amadeus Quartet is a tempting item, but ... BTW, just can't help playing Tony Bennett at this hour of the night, especially 'Tender is the night' (though I have not read the novel) ... ![]()

回覆(40): The N-th-tet question I've got the DG set, and as for his string quintet No.1, which I always go for, I'd like to say that the Naxos long-time-ago Ludwig Quartet recording is, to me, even more attractive: 8.553635 BRAHMS: String Quintets Nos. 1 and 2 Bruno Pasquier, viola Ludwig Quartet Recorded in 1995 The short pauses between phases are more apparent but never abrupt, it gives a feeling of natural breathing, whereas the tempo of the Amadeus Quartet recording is a bit too fast, yes, it is vivid, but I do feel in it the cosy and ultimately warm atmosphere that Ludwig Quartet constructs.

回覆(40): The N-th-tet question Hi DilDub, Let me start with something very similar, in that it involves the same composer and the same ensemble. I became a fan of the Raphael Ensemble about thirteen years ago when by chance I listened to this CD one night in England. I bought one the following day at Blackwell's. Brahms: String Sextets Nos. 1 & 2 The Raphael Ensemble [1988] Hyperion CDA 66276: DDD 1988 This is their first record, and one which has received considerable critical acclaim. I gradually accumulate a number of CDs from the Raphael (about ten), but this debut release stands out. There is a richness of texture, together with an aroma of drowsy numbness, that captivates one's senses, all of them. ![]()
