- #2 [ModernClassic], 11-01-08 06:28They are very respectful in sound quality if you know the right type to use.
But they do not sound like Jensen nor JCC...... - #3 [Gary138], 11-01-08 11:26ModernClassic hing
The most popular Russian PIO caps should be K40Y-9.
Have you try them? -
- #4 [ModernClassic], 11-01-09 08:25Sure I use k40y-9 quite a lot.....
- #5 [Gary138], 11-01-11 10:13Any other C-hing has tried K40Y-9?
唔啱用亦所費無幾 - #8 [254mm], 11-01-14 18:41有乜話識唔識揸辣雞, 銲下平價訊號線先, Practices make Perfect, 工多自然熟, no difficulties at all!!

Russian K40y Paper-In-Oil Capacitor
I must thank "Bob B" and "Les Lemmars" for kindly loaning me these K40y caps. After the usual rocky burn-in ritual, this PIO cap settled into a confident, natural sounding device. There are some audiophiles who rank these PIO caps as the best of the Russian military caps, including the FT-3 and K72 Teflon caps. I may agree with this sentiment when it comes to utter naturalness and ease of presentation as well as the lack of a subtle "plastic" sound, which of course all plastic (film) caps have.
Gladly, this PIO cap did not have an overly dark, laid-back sound some people may expect of PIO caps. The important midrange energy was quite forceful and engaging as well as richly harmonic. The rendering of textures was most reminiscent of a good vinyl setup, which is a good thing; and detail resolution was not lacking, either, but the extreme "air" on top was not as beautifully alive as with VCap Teflons. Speaking of Teflons, the only real reservation I have about K40y is in the bass. The VCap Teflon, K72, FT3, Sonicap Platinum all seem to have a tighter control over basslines with sharper leading edges and snappier decay. K40y's bass is more woody, richer, but just shy of the vise-grip crunch, so if you're a death-metal or electronica fan, K40y may not get you to the promised land.
Overall, I really enjoyed the K40y. Its raison d'tere falls squarely in the critical midrange, where tons of texture, bloom, and natural detail anchor the music without that subtle synthetic feel of many other caps. Although the voices aren't brightly spotlit, there is a magical highlighting and intensification without turning bright. - #11 [Gary138], 11-01-20 19:16Any other comment in connection with K40Y-9?
- #12 [welborne], 11-01-21 01:40i still have about 8 pieces of FT-3 0.1uf and 0.22uf big teflon caps and a few silver mica 0.1uf in the drawer. Probably a few k40y-9 oil caps too but have not got around trying them.
Also 10 BIG MBGO 30uf big red oil caps that i bought originally for using as Cathode bypass. Still sitting in box.
I can't tell anything about the sound. Not sure if ever got the chance to use them neither haha - #13 [welborne], 11-01-21 01:45this is a shot inside my heavily modded Consonance 300b single ended amp. you can see the teflon 0.22uf (silver tube) on the outside, and the reddish brown box shape cap near the middle, those are silver mica 0.1uf 600v.
But now I have both replaced by vcap cutf, still burning in.I can't tell if vcap are better than these. I like the silver mica very much. will use it again one day in another amp. - #14 [Gary138], 11-01-21 10:08welborne hing
PIO caps should be suitable for tube amps.
Why don't you try K40Y-9? - #15 [welborne], 11-01-21 15:45the problem with most russian vintage caps, as far as I have been informed by a well known german guru, is their magnetic structure due to magnetic shell which is bad in signal path. Put a magnet near k40y-9 and the silver mica ksg caps, you will knwo what i mean.
These russian caps, as robust and overbuilt as they are, are not originally made with audio in mind. Since my rebuilt Consonance amp is almost a cost-no-object project (read almost, as I did not splurge out completely for a HK$20,000 cows and chokes etc, but did put my money on the most expensive vcap cutf), i did not want to put in something that I would need to take out very soon.
The way to improve on the russian caps, or the easiest way, is to make a new non-magnetic case, stripped off the original steel/iron case, put the "core" inside in a new woodcase, sealed in natural beewax. This is what I did for two of my silver mica 0.1uf. See the picture. Took a lot of time of mine to make the bamboo case. They become even much bigger than they already are. - #16 [welborne], 11-01-21 15:46natural beeswax, from boiling beeswax candles
- #17 [welborne], 11-01-21 15:47as it cools down, the transparent beeswax solidifies into a opague yellowish wax again.
- #18 [welborne], 11-01-21 15:48job done! Russian high voltage 600v silver mica in beeswax and bamboo case. The leadouts are original
- #19 [welborne], 11-01-21 15:51I have not put these silver mica w/beeswax in any circuit. They are of 0.1uf value. Those who tried (from diyaudio forum) claimed they prefer these to even vcap teflon, and sounds like waht a good capacitor should be - nothing at all - or a wire.
I can lend this to someone to try and tell me the feedback. But you must return these to me as this pair is the only pair I have done. YOu can't imagine how difficult it was to open up those steel case with handtools, not to mentioned to tailor made those bamboo case. - #20 [yukclee], 11-01-22 10:10Well done ! Welcourne hing! Have to listen to how those V caps sound in your system. Anytime for gathering in Chinese New Year?

最出名既係丹麥Jensen
