[#1] Usher S520 speaker Got a pair S520 speaker. Just keep burning it. It is clean and very analytical. Feel very shocked, it only loss lower bass to my Spendor S3/5, The treble is much clearer. Yes, 是低音單元振膜透明那一款, I got it in Taiwan.

NT$4800 for non piano wood, NT$5800 for piano wood, you can buy it directly at Usher showroom in Taipei.

You can buy it in SZ too, I think it is RMB2400.
But I can tell you, RMB2400 still is a good price.

It wins 3/5A in some aspects except the mid range. If you want vocals only, 3/5A is the only choice. If you want overall balance, and very important- Pricing, then this is the one!

If you have friend traveling to Taipei, get one for you without any regret. Tell me, HK$1,500 to buy a speaker which is close to 3/5A!!!!

I keep burning my S520 every night. It is getting better and better. Will report any big finding later on.

Doctorjohn, I like your blog. What a co-incident, I got the NAD315BBE and Usher S520 as well. I did not know the NAD comes with two transformers.

This amp is a budget killer. Don't waste every penny I used to buy it.

The NAD only has 1 torroidal transformer. That pic from 6moons is actually a split picture. The right half is enlargement of the transformer part.

The NAD gets better and better with run-in too!

I tested many speakers in Usher showroom, personally I like 601. It gives better sound quality than S520. Bigger capacity to bring better bass, and the overall sonic balance. However, S520 is really a good buy at such price, but weaker in lower bass production due to smaller bass driver.

For those high priced Usher speaker, not my target as prices are higher.

I completely agree with you. The V-601 is really the best buy in the range, eclipsing the X-718 a little, for only a little more than the S-520. Problem is, it's just a little ugly and too bid.

But the X-708 is better.

However, I have always been interested in a pair of V-604. Can't carry it, so would have to pay shipping...

Went to Taipei yesterday.

The hardluck started with a 30 minute delay of the flight due to a intercom breakdown.

Then found myself seated between 2 babies on the left and another one on the right. In the first hour of the flight, I had super stereo sound stage made of babies crying with all their might mixed with parents' and cabin crew's pleasing and teasing of the babies.

Arrived at the hotel and found my most expensive white shirt bought recently were soiled with a blue dot of 2mm in diameter by the ball pen hanged in the pocket.

Met the client and was told that the various proposals I worked out for months after squeezing every drop of my brain juice were all found unacceptable.

Declined the clinet's dinner invitation and went to 誠品書店 hoping to buy some books for my kid and spend a peaceful evening there but found upon arrival after a long texi journey that it was JUST recently closed for a 2-month renovation.

Wandered around the Street of London, oh no, should be 忠孝東路 to explore something eye smoothing. Did find many hot and spicy Taipei girls but the scene just enhanced my flustraction and desperation without healing anything.

Swallowed a bowl of beef noodle, back to the hotel, checked mail and learned that the other meeting scheduled for this morning was cancelled. (Somebody died and the person I would meet needed to go the to the funeral house!!!)

This morning went to the hotel restaurant and found my favorite buffet breakfast had been replaced with some "heathier" continental breadfast (ie. bread and butter/jam!!).

Instead of changing for an earlier flight which I normally would, I told myself that I shouldn't just go home like this and then headed for 光華商場 where I should be able to find many books for kids. Arrived easily at the place where I have been to many times before and found no sight of 光華商場 at all but a parking lot. I said to the air "唔係黑成咁係馬!?" Asked a boy there who pointed me to a beautiful new building and said the 光華商場 has recently moved to there. I knew my hardluck was over!

Spent about 2 hours there and then hit the taxi and went straight to Usher. Got Mr. 譚興......and then bought and brought home these pretty little things

According to 譚興, they sell their driver units only to end users for replacement of broken ones but not any other manufacturers. He said those probably are....(which China is famous for)

According to 譚興 again, 黃老邪 carries the S520 and regular X718 only. They are reluctant to suply their Be 718 to the china agent because they worry that it will be cloned.

The Be 718 did sound a big notch higher than the S520 but the size and weight make it not that straight for a traveller to carry back to HK. After all, it is out of stock. According to 譚興 one more time, their productions of the Be models can never meet the demand. So, make sure there is a pair waiting for you before going to Taipei for them.

Sorry for your Taipei experience, but I hope the Usher is small compensation.

While you were there, did you see/hear the current version of the "subwoofer" prototype for the S-520?

Actually, according to 阿興, the SZ dealer of Usher, the clone "Sinovt" was "OEM'ed" by "Usher". The order was rather large so I doubt they were just units sold for repair/backup. 譚興 may not be right in everything...

Technically, it's not entirely true either that SZ dealer only has S-520 and X-718. When Kris and I visited there we saw a pair of floor-standing (I think) CP-6311. But during subsequent visits I never saw it again, and never even saw the S-520 and X-718!

So those who want to visit may be disappointed. Bettr buy it in Taipei.

Who knows, the intriguing world of China(x2)!
