[#206] 古CD機同好會 Owners of "vintage" cd players always worry about their CD transport mechanism or pick up one day goes out of service. I 'm wondering whether it is the laser pick up or some other components that suffers from the limited life span, and why is it so difficult to repair. If I keep the cd player switched on all the time, however leaving the disc tray empty, would the laser pick up be switched off automatically after detecting no disc thus saving its servicable life. Any idea? |

[#208] 古CD機同好會 Hi vt75 Yes simply turned it off is obvious and safest. But what it boggles me is that a lot of cd players/transport/dac are not intended for users to switch it off when it is not in use. For example my meridian player has a standby switch where as the power supply switch is on its back. Also Audionote DAC has its power switch on its back to. And interestingly Forsell transport I 'm using has one and only big knob on the front panel and its sole function is to turn off the display. Again its power supply switch is on its back. There are lots of similar examples. I believe this arragnement is for sonic improvement reason (components take time to warm up??). So I begin to wonder whether its a right thing to do leaving especially the CD transport power on all the time. Or that when there is no disc inside the tray the laser pick up is not energized so we dont have to worry. Cheers |

[#209] 古CD機同好會 I think the most concern is not DAC but the laser machanism for vintage cdp. CDP Mfgr. could refuse to supply spare parts after the goods fade out from the market for 7 years. Exact the parts of your collectables still been use in PRO system, just like CDM-9, CDM-9PRO. it's hard to get sapre laser head. |

[#210] 古CD機同好會 jules, i have the same concern. but for me, i always switch everything off if they won't be in use in more than 1 hour. i guess this is quite important as vt75 has pointed out. for example, my meridian mcd pro runs quite hot that i absolutely don't take any risks to shorten the lives of the parts inside for leaving it on all the time. so after playing, i just turn all the switches (including the one on the back) off. if you're able to listen to the difference between before and after warming up, you can just turn it on in advance before serious listening. what PT100 talked about is quite true too. we can hardly expect the manufacturers are willing to use their low-stock spare parts to repair someone's obsolete machines rather than using them to support their currently available products for maintenance and profit sakes. in short, under the situation of low or even rare supply of spare parts, we should all be very good to our vintage cdp's. i suggest to use them only for serious listening. for casual listening, just use some new reasonably priced decent player like toshiba sd-3960/4960 or samsung's dvd-hd841 which i've heard many raves from users... :P |

[#213] 古CD機同好會 The spare parts that I worry most about the CD players is the CD mechanism. Gotta act fast to find them if you can. The DAC and digital decoding chips such as the Philips TDA1541 and SAA7220 can still be found but it is getting scarce. TDA1540 should still be available in Japan but also gotta act fast. LED Display is also of concern but they are just common parts for all Philips model. Best way is to get some old CD players as spare parts just like what vintage car collectors do. These old CD players may not be easily found in HK but through overseas bidding site, you can still find some at dirt cheap price. Just need to find a friend or relative to temporarily store it for you. I have bought a Philips CD104 as backup for my Marantz CD95 ... |
