| [#242] Passive Pre amp 同好會 gchan 2001 hing - The MFA Baby Classic V2 is sounding real good: clean, spacious and with plenty of texture and dynamics. It will probably get even better when fully run in. While it definitely sounds better than Tisbury, I have not done a comparison between the two preamps on a level playing field. With MFA, I am running on full balanced and without using adaptors while with Tisbury, I am running on RCA with the use of adaptors for connection with my power amp. Tisbury is still very good to me for its price, and I guess you will want to keep it for a while (especially if your system has no need for balanced connections). I guess I will need another resistor passive preamp with balanced in and out to see the difference between the two types of passive preamps. dkyyu hing - Now I can see why you like MFA so much! Is your Baby Reference a V2? I am wondering how V2 differs sonically from V1 given their prices are not much different. | [#243] Passive Pre amp 同好會 Dear rc2 hing, First thing first, don't forget to set to maximum volume level when running-in your passive pre per MFA's advice. You don't need to power on the power amp I sold my first generation MFA after hearing the V2 second generation with larger transformer after 1 minute. V2 is the clear winner. I immediately sold my second generation after hearing the Reference model at another c-hing's (Dominque hing) place. You probably know I bought the Baby reference directly from MFA eventually. The gentleman who bought my second generation V2 also found the Baby Reference is clearly superior to V2 generation with much better 3D imaging and dynamic. On most occasions, I owned or have good chances hearing most passive pre, no doubt they all sound more transparent than any active pre known to my ears but unfortunately they all incline to sound on the lean side when playing orchestra passages .... until I found the Baby reference. Not only the Baby Reference can do as good as the Nagra PLP preamp in the dynamic department (in side by side comparison in my system), The Baby Ref is far superior than the more expensive PLP for it's tonnes of harmonics and presence I could not hear in any active pre. I really hope you gentlemen can take a step further to hear the Baby Reference or its brother Reference. For around GBP5K to 6K, the baby Reference could end your life long journey of searching for the holy grail. I am not suggesting the V2 is inferior. In fact, the V2 was the best sounding pre-amp I had ever experienced until I found my Baby Reference. I may be stupid but I am not foolish (learnt from another member Feikeung), I know what other expensive pre amp can or cannot do. For the price I paid for my Baby Reference, I consider the Baby Reference is a steal of the century. Buy it if you can. |

| [#244] Passive Pre amp 同好會 I bought my V1 around 3-6 years ago and the V2 when first launched in 3-4 years ago. Can't remember the years exactly. When comparing the V1 and V2 side by side, everyone can tell within 30 seconds the V2 sounds much much better with full bodied 3D imaging and larger soundstage than V1. Don't misjudge the V1, it can still sound remarkably well completing in the top league when partnering with the vintage tube amp e.g. Leak 12.1 etc. I am now using the Baby Reference, not V1 and V2, driving a pair of Graaf OTL power amp in full balance mode. |

MFA now has a 2nd generation of their Baby Reference (what they called the "Baby Reference V2") which they have been producing since 2015. What I am wondering is how Baby Reference V2 sounds differently from the original Baby Reference. In case your Baby Reference is the original version, you may wish to consider whether to pursue the Baby Reference V2 as the "new Holy Grail". : - ) |

| [#248] Passive Pre amp 同好會 Thanks. As previously suggested, I ended my journey to search for the holy grial after acquiring the baby reference. That sums it up: it’ll make living without it unbearable. My 1st G Baby reference serves me well today and I am satisfied. I guess the difference between Baby V1 & V2 is not as much as Classic V2 goes up to Baby Reference. I'll schedule my upgrade plan till the next Reference generation G3 seeing its day. |

| [#259] Passive Pre amp 同好會 Hi Chi, I chose the vintage path re passive. Very odd and probably does not make sense to many. I use a General Radio 1450 attentuator in between two RCA 600 ohm:600 ohm transformers. Just that 600:600 is a big no no to most people these days. |
