[#3017] Universal Vintage Collection For Vivaldi's Stabat Mater, I have 3 versions, of which the best one is A.Scholl(ma), C.Banchini(v) & Ensemble 415 The other two that I owned are Harnoncourt/Teldec and Negri/Philips. If you are interested in Vivaldi's vocal music, there is a expanding series by OPUS111. ![]() |

[#3022] Universal Vintage Collection Agree with DX7770 hing, I find CD price in Central HMV has been increased. Inflation really comes, at least for CD & real estate market. Anyway, I buy a few special price double CD album (mostly cello) from central Pro Sound. Also buy the Haydn, Bach by Jian Wang. Now listening to Du Pre playing Brahms Sonata. Personally, I find Du Pre's playing is much better than Lynn Harrell. |

[#3023] Universal Vintage Collection hi erictang, I have listened yo yo's bach (RCA) which is quite smooth and light in sounding. In short, it is quite a romantic interpretation. How is Wong Jian's? I am quite interested in it. |

[#3024] Universal Vintage Collection Hi Ocean, My Yo-yo Ma bach is on Sony 198x LP. Don't know if it is the same recording as yours. I think Ma has another recording a few years ago. Have only listened to suite no.1 of Wang. Wang's playing is romantic and expressive, the recording is sonically good, rubato (eg Track 2) is sometimes more than enough. Track 1, some of the notes are a bit mechanical. Track 4 is very expressive, and I like it. Track 5 is too expressive and I don't like how those long notes are stressed (same as Track 3). Anyway, this is only my personal opinion on suite no.1 only. I also get Bach Cello Suites played by Maurice Gendron from Philips DUO today. The other in my library are Ma, Maisky, Starker. |

[#3025] Universal Vintage Collection ++++++++++++++ Touche, JT. Seems like the Opus Vivaldi that you recommended is an out of print CD. I even checked Amazon for used copy and none is available! ++++++++++++++ |

[#3026] Universal Vintage Collection In Bach cello suite no.1 1st movement, most cellist play the 8 notes of each phrase slur in one bow, Wang plays the last 4 notes in seperate bow (if my listening is correct) and those are the notes I find a bit 'mechanical'. I like his playing of Haydn Cello concerto no.1 3rd movement, very clean. But again stressing on those some long notes this movement is a bit much. |

[#3028] Corboz's Stabat mater Hi Tanuski, JT, and All, Vivaldi: In furore giustissimae irae, RV 626 / O quie caeli terraeque, RV 631 / Nisi Dominus, RV 608 / Stabat mater, RV 621 Verena Schweizer (soprano) / Uta Spreckelsen (soprano) / Helen Watts (alto) / Naoko Ihara (alto) / Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne / English Bach Festival Baroque Orchestra / Orchestre de la Fondation Gulbenkian de Lisbonne / Michel Corboz [1975, 1975, 1978, 1977] Erato (In Excelsis) 0630-17920-2: ADD 1997 As an owner of this disc for six hours now and having listened to it twice, I find it very good indeed. The soloists are all well cast, and they are lovingly lyrical, particularly Verena Schweizer in RV 626. She sings with tremendous finesse and refinement. The Stabat mater is compelling in a warm and rich setting. Overall the performance is invigorating and the mid-1970s recording quite splendid, very easy on the ear. One would perhaps want a tiny bit more orchestral bite, though there is certainly no lack of freshness and immediacy. The booklet includes a programme outline, a Vivaldi chronology (with parallel columns on art, literature, music, religion, and history), full text and English translations, and a "Short Glossary of Sacred Music" (a cappella, anthem, … requiem, vespers). An undoubted bargain at HK$40.5. ![]() |

[#3030] Brahms - Ma, Ax Hi erictang and All, Much interested to know that you have spent some time with the Du Pre's Brahms cello sonatas. Is that a mono or stereo recording? Live or studio? At the moment my farourite is Rostropovich and Serkin on DG. I bought the Ma and Ax (Sony) this morning (HK$71.1) and find Ma uncharacterically in the shadow and very tender, almost too tender in its cello voice. But the abundant romanticism is there, and the music they produce is quite enjoyable. |

[#3032] Brahms - Ma, Ax The Du Pre's Brahms sonatas is stereo and sonically OK; recorded in 1968. My copy is EMI GEMINI Series (7243 5 86233 2 1); it is a double CD set with Chopin and Franck sonata recorded in 1972. I have 2 Yo-yo Ma/Ax (RCA & Sony) but have not listened to them recently. I may bias to the RCA one as I have it for about 20 years. Infact, I only start collecting the same piece of music by different performer the recent years. For Brahms Sonata No.1 3rd movement, I perfer Ma of RCA over Du Pre (if my memory is correct) How is the Rostropovich/Serkin, I have a casette tape copied from LP long time ago, but don't know where it is now. |

[#3034] Brahms - Du Pre The one you posted, Tanuski, is in mono (5 57293-2). EMI has also released a studio recording of Du Pre and Barenboim in stereo (5 62741-2). And thx to erictang for bringing my notice to the GEMINI edition. According to the Penguin Guide, the stereo disc is more successful in terms of sound, but the performances "are flawed by Jacqueline de Pre's undeniable stylistic self-indulgence". (Yearbook 2004/05) On the other hand, the mono ones offer "passionate urgency", and "the extra bite of spontaneity adds to the magnetism"; however, the mono sound "is cramped, with the piano rather shallow and clattery". (Yearbook 2002/03) The Guide rates the mono higher than the stereo. To me, the partnership of Du Pre and Kovacevich seems to be have brought out more magic. |

[#3035] Best sound Cellist Dear hi-hands, Who is the "best-sound" cellist in your mind? Mine is the French cellist Maurice Gendron. He plays Schubert "Appregione Sonata" in a super sweet tone. |
