[#3036] Best sound Cellist Dear Tanuski, Actually, for Vivaldi's Gloria, there are many fine versions to choose. I highly recommended the one attached and can guarantee that it worth every penny you spent (HK$78.00 only in last HMV sales).... :) ![]() |

[#3037] Best sound Cellist ++++++++++++++++++++++ Hi Eric Tang, JT and all, I am prejudice as far as Milstein goes. Some people may find him lacked passion in comparing to other violin masters. I was intrigued by his way of presentation. He was sort of telling a story. A story about himself: I am not a showy person and so I played in sort of anti-climax way. In that sense you are seeing a musician playing his guts while listening to the CDs. One thing we can appreciate is at least he is true to himself and to his music. He is not targeting at the $ sign while show casing his“love”. In the contemporary classical performers arena, there is a tendency of getting back to the romantic mode. A genre that was last set forth around the 1st WW period. Such trend is most popular among Asian musician. It reflects the time required for a culture to spread from on continent to another: from Europe to Japan, to China. There is nothing wrong with being out of fashion. As a matter of fact, nostalgic become a magical selling point in the Western hemisphere for the past 15 years. Fashion can be a great signifier. A lot of the Caucasian musicians left classical music and embrace newer style for the last 2 decades, for an instant New Age, Pop, Hip-hop etc. Then there comes the Asian who filled the vacuum perfectly. Personally I have nothing against that. What I find it hard to enjoy is those who imitates tenderness, who acts Romantic! Art (in its broad sense) is the communication between the artist and the audience. Simulation (pretending what you are not) not only is misleading, it also destroys the wonder of such gift from heaven! And that is where Milstein attracts me. I am sure he fell short in many areas. Unfortunately my understand of classical music is limited. And I have not had a chance to read any of Milstein's material. So the above is only my personal interpretation. Hopefully other fellows in the site can provide more in depth view on the subject! PS Thanks JT for recommending the Vivaldi Glorias set. ++++++++++++++++++++++ |

[#3038] Milstein - magister ludi Tanuski our staunch fan of Milstain, Your opinion reminds me of an article I read in Ming Pao Monthly (Jan 2005) by 蘆, and I am typing the following out for you: “在小提琴家們的心目中,米爾斯坦可能是海費茲惟一的對手,也酗]只有他在「硬技巧」的一環上能達到海費茲的水平。...他的風格在於能有適度的自我約束,不會有海費茲那樣的強調對比,也沒有因為對比帶來的神經質而對觀眾產生刺激。所以他的技巧表現也釣S有海費茲的眩目,但在知音的眼中,他是無懈可擊的。人人都推崇海費茲,只有他認為海費茲沒什麼,因為在技巧上也野u有他跟海費茲是「同一級數」的小提琴大師。” (p. 95) |

[#3041] Milstein - magister ludi ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ JT, I ordered a used copy of the Decca double album that you recommended from Amzon.com. It cost me $11.08 US (not as good as your $78 HK brand new). And it is taking a week before I can enjoy it. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Trollope, Thanks for attaching the article from 明報月刊. It is always nice to know that we are not alone! Sincerely. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ There is a small snowstorm going on for the past 2 days. Sending you guys a picture (taken from my window) reminding how luck you are in HK. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ![]() |

[#3043] Milstein - magister ludi The advice from here is really good for beginner like me. Besides Janos Starker, I tried some cello concerto CD from Mischa Maisky, Zuill Bailey & Jacqueline Du Pre. This is my favourite: http://www.emiclassics.de/xml/6/550186/5668962.html Cellokonzerte Jacqueline Du Pré Haydn / Boccherini Daniel Barenboim / John Barbirolli 06.11.1998 Any "MUST BUY" Jacqueline Du Pre CD recommend? |

[#3052] Milstein - magister ludi Hi Henry ("mutter"), An inexpensive, widely available, and rewarding Milstein beginner CD is, perhaps, his Beethoven and Brahms concertos, released by EMI in its "Great Recordings of the Century" series. EMI has also put out a Milstein DVD in the "classic archive" series. |

[#3054] Milstein - magister ludi In the EMI "The Art of Nathan Milstein" 6-CD set, the conductor of Beethoven is Leinsdorf, and Fistoulari conducts the Brahms; while in the single "Recordings of the Century" disc, the two works are played (in superbly transferred mono, clear and warm) by Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra / Steinberg. An investment in the box-set may perhaps be a collector's job. Availability in shops (not on the net though I think) may also be a problem. Now, it's very curious of DG. They group three key recordings of Milstein in its "Double" 453 142-2, featuring Brahms (VPO, Jochum), Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky (both VPO, Abbado); but the Beethoven included therein is Zukerman with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra / Barenboim. Otherwise, this would have been the ideal introductory Milstein for all. I am at this very moment listening to the Andante in his 1973 recording of Tchaikovsky. He sings with a lyrical beauty that is powerful, in his own way. I expect the recently released BBC (Legends BBCL 41512) issue of his Beethoven with Adrain Boult to be worthy of exploring. Any comments please. |
