[#21] Usher speaker DJ I haven't audited X708, maybe I should audit it in my next trip to Taipei. But just worry I will keep buyiny and bring it home to pile up my house with speakers. It is understandable if Usher is protecting themselves. They sold a lot of speakers worldwide. It is true China is good at copying. The China market may be big, but for usher, big trouble if someone copies all their models and dump them in the world markets. I was told S520 is being sold 600,000 pairs last year. See how big their volume is, so if someone copies it 100% and sell it cheaper in Europe or USA, how is the consequence? Anyway, it is good to see such budget speaker in the market. FYI, I mate it with the Jam T-amp, what a fun? |

[#22] Usher speaker DJ ""...did you see/hear the current version of the "subwoofer" prototype for the S-520?"" I did not. I didn't even know there is such thing. I listened only to the S-520 and Be-718 as I could spare only an hour there. Their floor standing models are really attractive but shipping could be a problem especially as Usher would take away the packaging for reason you have mentioned. Look forward to your full report on the S-520. |

[#23] Usher speaker The S-520s are absolutely brilliant. I bought them in Shenzhen for RMB2,000, something like HKG$2,300, considerably more than what it would cost in TW but still, it's a bargain. The S-520s are a no-brainer too. Just hook them up and they sound great. I didn't even bother to put them on stands and they sound just luuvly. I am going to go to TW to try out their more expensive models, in particular the Be-ers... Thanks for the great reviews Dr. John... |

[#24] Usher speaker I think it is stupid to think that you don't sell them in China/HK to avoid copying! Now is the internet era! |

[#27] Usher speaker It tends to be my big discovery this year. I pair the S520 with NAD 315BBE, it gives incredibly good sound. A poor man Roll's Royce! The whole setup only costs less than $4000. |

[#29] Usher speaker AVdirect: The NAD is truely amazing indeed. Somehow the music in my study is even more musical than before!!! And that is compared with the Cyrus 1, no slouch !!! I did try the NAD + Usher in my study, though currently it's ATC ACM7. the X-708 is a LOT larger (so is the V-601), so many people would be dis-inclined. |

[#30] Usher speaker DJ I like the setup (NAD315BBE + UsherS520) a lot because they are so musical and natural that people would love it. Of course, S520 cannot replace your ATC ACM7. Like a Honda Civic, it cannot replace a Mercedes C200, they are of different level. But what I like it most is, the NAD is an entry level, but it match the S520 so good that it gives what the S520 wants - power & sonic performance. It makes S520 sing. Personal comment, I like NAD better than Cambridge. I do not have Cyrus, Audiolab or Quad to compare it, but given my complete setup cost me less than $3000, I got nothing to complain. |

[#31] Usher speaker avdirect: Regardless of price, ATC SCM-7 is certainly not superior in all aspects to the S-520. While the ATC may be a little more textured, it's harder to get a full bass out of it, and can sound a little on the lean and light side. |

[#32] Usher speaker DJ I audited ATC SCM7 before, the conclusion is this ATC introducing it for market share only. And it is only one thing better : cheaper ATC10 is better than SCM7 in all aspect. For S520, did you try to use tube amp to pair it. Maybe it is a good choice. |

[#33] Usher speaker Gents, Has anyone compare S520 with the Pioneer Pure Malt VP? |

[#34] Usher speaker avdirect: I did try tube amps with the S-520, but I think it's ultimately really a solid state speaker! :-) As for the SCM7, mine is the one before the current version. It's certainly as you said tailored for a more modern market in having a more open treble etc. I think it's never meant to be a replacement for the 10. In terms of size, the 10 is in the middle of the 7 and 12, and so would not have the same lower mid to bass character as the 10. It's a fine speaker on its own but absolutely not up to the original 10. The interesting thing is to compare the previous A7, which I also have, with the SCM-7. The drivers look the same, but the sound is completely different. The A7 is a lot darker, but also a lot fuller! It's hard to say which the modern listener would like. |

[#35] Usher speaker doctorjohn, What you wrote about the NAD tuner is so true. Excellent reception. I get all channels using just the built in antenna. |

[#36] Usher speaker bababui: I thought only the AM antenna was built in (mine is not working but I heard it's good). Maybe yours had a rabbit ear attached to it or something? Did you recently get it? Same model? |

[#37] Usher speaker doctorjohn, I'm not sure what a rabbit ear is, but it's got this T-shaped thing on the back. I assume that's the built in antenna and it's working flawlessly. It's a NAD 4020A. Bought it here two days ago for a couple hundred dollars after reading the review you wrote. Such a bargain. Thx. |

[#38] Usher speaker bababui: The T-shaped thing is only the AM antenna. Basically you're NOT using any antenna for the FM and the thing is still pulling in good signal. You must be living in an area with strong signal. Insert an antenna into the 75 ohm FM terminal and perhaps sound shall further improve! |

[#39] Usher speaker Wow........now that's truly amazing. An old, cheap tuner getting all channels crystal clear without even using an antenna. I'll try to hook up the antenna tonight and see if it would surprise me more. Thanks for the advice. Which type of antenna should I get though? |

[#40] Usher speaker bababui: In your case I think anything shall do. If your flat has a TV outlet, use the FM socket. If not, use a rabbit ear or T wire dipole antenna. Actually, any unshielded wire may do well. Where are you located? |
