Network supports >4GB.
This is what I have posted on the "oppo 同好會" thread:

Regarding the DLNA support, I have no problem playing MKV and VOB (DVD files), but the quality isn't good.
This is what I have posted on another forum:

Setting up DLNA with PS3 Media Server version 1.20 is not hard, and it works without the code above. However, the transcode uses 80% of my core2quad 3.0GHz CPU when play 1080p materials , and the quality is bad . Even though without transcode, the quality does not meet my standard. I have given up this feature already.

There is another solution for store the media collections if you do not need to stream your media through the whole house. It is using AVCHD. Program like multiavchd and tsMuxeR will split the file into 4GB parts so that they will fit on the FAT32 hard drive. I have put 1TB of my DVDs and blu-rays on a hard drive using AVCHD. The quality is good because there is no transcode and/or conversion . The programs just put the media into AVCHD file format. Also, the processing time for putting in AVCHD is not much. For tsMuxeR, it takes <3 mins for a DVD9 and 10-15 mins for a blu-ray if the DVDs and the blu-rays are already on the hard drive . Note: This is not teaching how to make private illegal copy. You have to own the disc to make it to AVCHD. I am responsible for people making illegal copy.

backup BD to external HDD in 3 steps:
1. You need tools like AnyDVD to backup BD to your PC.
2. You need to format your external HDD using fat32format to go over MS 32GB limit. You can download the fat32format from here: http://www.crapcontrol.com/content.php?article.14
3. Use multiavchd or tsMuxeR to make the backup BD to AVCHD, and save it to your external HDD.

Here is the quick comparison of MultiAVCHD and tsMuxeR:
MultiAVCHD (http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/) is built around from tsMuxeR (http://www.smlabs.net/tsmuxer_en.html ), so MulitAVCHD has more features but takes longer to do the process.
MultiAVCHD tsMuxeR
Menu: YES NO
DTS on DVD: NO YES
Auto split size: YES NO
Auto subtitle font size: YES YES
Auto DVD charters import: YES NO
Time to complete (18GB BD): 18min 10min

Tips for using MultiAVCHD:
-Turn off “Use eac3to” to disable audio conversion.
-Use PS3 mode to get menu support.

Tips for using tsMuxeR:
-To open BD. Drag the playlist .mpls file from the BD folder (\BDMV\PLAYLIST) to tsMuxR.
-Remember to save the processed “BDMV” and “CERTIFICATE” folders under a folder name “AVCHD” (all cap).

thanks pkny hing for the expert sharing ! Due to moving house I haven't played with my 83 much after the HDMI didn't sync first time ;p

Would the media playback quailty as you described be better than standalone boxes like VIPE or HDX ? I like their convenience although I'm using dual core HTPC MCE fast enough for 720p H.264 (Gigabyte H971)

I haven’t used any standalone box, so I don’t know how the Oppo compare with others. However, I do know Oppo 83 uses VRS on everything including DLNA and USB. As a result, it should have better quality.

Personally I don’t like to use DLNA although it supports >4GB file. The video have more noise and less contrast when comparing the same file playing through the USB. May be my network is so congested (I have 6 PC running in the same network).

guitarman hing,
Sadly, the Oppo only supports DLNA. For detail about networking support and DLNA, you can look here:
