[#22] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp My gut feeling is..... the boss is buffing. We can all go to the MFA web site and order direct. £5000 is the list price. How is the sound of the Pass Pre of Dignity Audio? and how much they price them? Declare: I am a user of MFA Reference.

[#23] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp IMHO, they have different sound tuning but for £5000 MFA is too much. Dignity Audio has 2 version. 1. cow input(6/9 db increase, can't remember) then alps vol out. Cost ~hk$9K(low end version) 2. real TVC cost I believe ~hk$2xxxx(didn't ask) Both version don't hv balance in/out. The SQ for the 2 pre are similar with high end version with more dynamic, worth go listening if anyone target to get a passive TVC pre. p.s. The boss uses ATC100 driven by his 300B amp for demo which I reckon can't fully show the potential of the gears!!!

[#24] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp MFA seems quite expensive. There are other cheaper choices that have good reviews: http://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/django_e.html http://www.promitheusaudio.com/frontpage.html

[#25] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp Dear CKKeung, We'd tried the Django (S&B tranformer), Prometheusaudio yr before. Actually me and some friends of mine are still using these as selector control in our AV systems. Do you want to buy my used Django and Prometheusaudio? I'll give you a good price for reason of house clearance.

[#26] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp I had owned the MFA Classic (copper version) in the past. The secondhand price of around $13k is excellent VFM. For me it sounds a bit too tight and a bit too hifi sound if I want max transparency from the TVC I.e. with Kimber KCAG and OTL (I know the shortfall may also be lied with the Kimber and the OTL but the tightness sound of the TVC was still there by changing with other cables and amps and the sound signature of this TVC was also well documented in the many website. And this is why MFA is having other upscaling model). Recently I have brought the old version of Wu's 牛volume which sounds more relax and this is what I am looking for, despite Wu's said my version would have a limited bandwidth (presumably his latest version is better?) I have not heard the latest model from MFA yet but since the winding of the S&B has been increased, this might be the version which I am looking for if I ever want an ultimate TVC. But with such price I am sure I could have many options to choose if I could afford to pay this sum. I have not heard the Prometheusaudio's TVC but before I brought the MFA Classic I had considered it, in particular the signature model because the big c core transformer inside is a very impressive breast. 最後修改時間: 2011-12-18 11:16:07

[#27] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp er113 hing, If you willing to spend HK$2xxxx for a TVC passive pre, you should go for a MFA Classic. The list price is only £1600. The mother company of MFA is Stevens & Billington, and they have one of the best quality TVC in the market. With a little bit of luck, you may able to find one in R33 2nd hand market.

[#28] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp MFA is S&B. when S&B found out that there are people(audiophiles) willing to pay top dollars for everyday products, they just stop selling their parts to other manufacturer. they didn't even design the first TVC. well at least according to the guy who work with them on the prototype.

[#30] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp I really don't understand why people are willing to pay $2xxxx to $80,000 something to buy a TVC! What is the valuable parts of a TVC consists of? a chassis, a attentuator, transformer, wiring...connectors , that's all! Would we psychologically more comfort to buy expensive stuffs in return for good equipment nowadays?

[#31] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp Let's think it in this way: 1) What on earth inside in a $80K to $800K active preamp? 2) In terms of material cost, will you consider a $80K passive pre-amp cheats you more than a $18K or $800K active preamp? 3)Will you consider a $800K pre-amp sounds better than a $20K-$80K passive before comparison? 4) What is the purpose of one's pre-amp supposed to do in a well balanced stereo system? Amplification or attentuation, or impedance matching? Don't bother the answers for the aboves as I believe different of us may have different opinions and audio experience. 最後修改時間: 2011-12-19 11:26:33

[#32] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp For hi-end active/ passive preamp with mega price tag, we are not talking about material price or sound beacuse no way there is any justification. We are talking about brandname and proud of ownership just like driving those super cars and these are priceless (in their mind). In this regards MFA has hold no advantage at all. Mega buck solid state preamps like FM, Boulder, MBL and Cello (New and Old) have got all the aces (or in a lesser extent, Audio Note, Shindo, Kondo, ARC for tubes). Also for people who can spend these much for a toy, many of them would have a proper listening room say 20ft x 15ft and therefore the system matching of MFA would be a problem in order to fill in the room with sufficent sound level, in particular those who are using turntable as the main source. 最後修改時間: 2011-12-19 11:55:31

[#33] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp the system matching of MFA would be a problem in order to fill in the room with sufficent sound level, in particular those who are using turntable as the main source _____________ Dear mda, Morning. Not really wow. I found a friend of mine spinning his Linn LP12 as reference system in an over 1000 sq feet private studio located in Kowloon Bay is so fond of installing his MFA MK2 in his big system with both ESL and Horn speakers yielding big big pleasant sound. Anther happy passive preamp users I can quote as examples are icefox and cp who are running their passive pre system in their huge studio without trouble. I do share your view that the character of MFA MK1 is on the lean side and that's why I moved up to their bigger MK2 with significant improvement achieved in this area. Hearing is believing. Do you want to try the BBR at home for a week?

MFA is just not one of them either. |

[#36] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp I found a friend of mine spinning his Linn LP12 as reference system in an over 1000 sq feet private studio located in Kowloon Bay is so fond of installing his MFA MK2 in his big system with both ESL and Horn speakers yielding big big pleasant sound. Anther happy passive preamp users I can quote as examples are icefox and cp who are running their passive pre system in their huge studio without trouble. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I have much doubt about it. It really depends on the sensitivity of the power amp (e.g. the icefox EAR does have high gain from my expereince)and the speakers e.g. horn. In my small place, I did have difficulties to achieve the sound level required with the MFA and the my vintage amp (except Leak which has ultra high input sensitivity) and the ESL and the vinyl front end. Another issue is the method for connecting with the MFA with the phono stage. At that time I ran the phono stage of Matisse/ Conrad Johnson/ Marantz 7 reissue in hot rod mod (i.e. using tape out and by-pass the line stage, connected with either Klyne head amp or Audio Note MC transformer with Denon MC). Unfortunately the MFA did not have enough gain with about half of my power amps, or in many cases the volume must be set at about 4 o'clock position which was not ideal as the TVC is said to be not that linear at the high level. You cannot beat the science by ignoring the 10x or more active line stage comparing with the MFA (it is still a passive pre disregarding which generation). I doubt there are many stand alone phono stages which would yield sufficient gain to drive the MFA like with active preamp in the chain. Or did your friend use the TVC/ MFA to act as the volume of the preamp and maintain the line-stage in the chain? 最後修改時間: 2011-12-19 14:01:48

[#38] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp Yes I know much of what we paid are going to the R & D , including circuit design, material used & matching etc.... But for a volume control/passive Preamp, what was actually inside? I have owned numerous P&G attentuator and it was claimed to be the best found in the market. So in what way we need to pay xxK for a passive amp?!

[#39] Music First Audio (MFA) Passive Pre-amp Those who serves in the preicsion transformer industy can tell everyone the difference on workmanship and material cost between resistor-type base and transformer based design. Does anyone know how long the cable is required to manufacture a pair of precision transformer? This becomes very interesting between the cost accountant point of view and end-user's.
