That's Haitink in his first ever opera recording. I've listened to it (a library copy). Brilliant & spectacular sound. I wonder if this 3-CD set has ever been issued in mid-price in its entirety, but there is a highlight release on EMI's Red Line series.

Shamus, I first came to know of this set from the first Penguin Guide I bought in 1990. It was the Guide's top choice at that time. So, naturally when I saw it in a library, I borrowed and listened to it.

EMI has issued many highlight editions of it. The front cover of the Seraphim Classics (2000) is a thing of beauty itself (see photo).

The latest one is from the "Encore" series.

I was almost tempted to buy myself a ticket to the recent recital of Eliabeth Leonskaja because (a) she was highly regarded by Sviatoslav Richter and (b) Schubert's final piano sonata was in her programme.

But the disincentive was simply too strong. I made up my mind to boycott the Hong Kong Cultural Centre after the first time I was there years ago.

A few moments ago I made an A/B comparison of Franck's "Panis angelicus" (The Bread of Angels) in these two CDs:

A:
Plácido Domingo -- Sacred Songs
Recorded February 2002
DG 289 471 575-2: DDD 2002 (Made in USA)

B:
Plácido Domingo . Vienna Boys Choir . Ave Maria
Recorded February 1979
RCA Red Seal RD70760: AAD[?] (Made in Japan)

Twenty-three years separate these two recordings. It's amazing how Domingo has kept his full and sensual voice. The 2002 version may be wanting in the highest registers and brilliance, but Domingo's hallmark soft and velvet warmth does not fail to give enormous pleasure. This beautifully recorded CD is a welcome addition to the wealth of the Domingo discography.

The RCA Red Seal disc remains one of my desert island discs. The great Spanish tenor was in his prime in the late 70s to early 80s. Oh, those depths of splendour! No apologies need to be made about the recorded sound, and the contribution of the twenty-four boys and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra helps make this CD a divine source of delight.
