[#5898] June The main item in this Ondine SACD (hybrid multichannel) is T's Sym No. 5, with Eschenbach conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Verizon Hall. Highly recommended by the latest "The Absolute Sound" (Aug 2006), p.149. |

[#5899] June "In the second movement, we hear that the Philadelphia's strings remain one of its glories, as they were back in Stokowski's and Ormandy's days, and remained through the Muti and Sawallisch eras. The lovely tone of principal oboist Richard Woodhams -- one of the Orchestra's stars -- is heard to fabulous effect." |

[#5901] Being lucky I was lucky last Saturday. The Schubert Unfinished is full of power and impulse - which may even be more pleasurable than the one with the WPO (live on DG). ![]() |

[#5902] Being lucky _____________________ Trollope, It is really nice finally meeting up with you yesterday. Strongly doubt if Trollope can read the posting in a timely fashion since you are still on the road for another few days. Please thank your wife for inviting me to the top of the Empire State Building. I was waiting for the sunset and finally gave in by 7:20PM. May be if we could hang out a bite longer together, I will have better endurance. Finally my legs failed me. I took a couple more pictures and I am turning in one now. Hope you are having a present trip and show us some of your nice shoots in Niagara Fall. Sincerely! PS thanks again for the books and CDs. _____________________ ![]() |

[#5903] The two Ts With the help of an amazing set of coincidences, Tanuski and Trollope managed to spend an entire afternoon together. This was as good as could be hoped for, given the tight schedule of Trollope's tour. The two Ts, who began their epistolary exchanges in this classical music thread early last year (probably started with Mahler's CDs), soon found that their common pursuits included a variety of other intellectual concerns. Their messages have since also appeared in R33's book thread from time to time. When Tanuski, who has been a resident of New York for twenty years, heard of Trollope's plan to travel to his part of the world, he was genuinely excited, only to be subsequently informed that his visitor could spend no more than the time of a lunch. At noontime on Sunday, 23 July, they finally met, for the first time, on board USS Intrepid aircraft carrier, berthed at Pier 86 on the Hudson River in New York City. The carrier currently serves as a museum dedicated to sea, air, and space travel. Lunch was a simple affair at McDonald's in the museum, for the two Ts were busy in their face-to-face conversation on music, books, and hi-fi, etc. Naturally, notes were supplied and compared on some R33 phenomena and outsized personalities. After lunch the two gentlemen visited the United Nations. At four o'clock the NY oldhand brought the HK guy to the Virgin Megastore in Broadway, where the visitor bought two CDs, one classical (Haskil) and the other jazz (a Verve compilation). A couple of hours before sunset, they went up to the top of the Empire State Building. At the open-air promenade on the 86th floor, the panoramic view of the entire city was limitless before them. Then came the beginning of sunset with all its splendour and it was time to say goodbye. Trollope insisted that his friend should stay at the Building to take more pictures with his fine camera (incidentally the same thing that Trollope had but did not bring along with him on this trip). At about seven o'clock when Trollope was heading towards Penn's Landing, Philadelphia, he turned his shoulder and once again came within sight the unparalleled waters of the Hudson. In graceful magnificence the Empire State Building emerged, where Tanuski was at its top floor capturing some fine moments of his city. I enclose a picture I took later in Washington D.C. ![]() |

[#5904] TO: The two Ts On the first part of the journey I was looking at all the life There were plants and birds and rocks and things There was sand and hills and rings The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz And the sky with no clouds The heat was hot and the ground was dry But the air was full of sound I've been through the desert on a horse with no name It felt good to be out of the rain In the desert you can remember your name 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain La, la ... After two days in the desert sun My skin began to turn red After three days in the desert fun I was looking at a river bed And the story it told of a river that flowed Made me sad to think it was dead After nine days I let the horse run free 'Cause the desert had turned to sea There were plants and birds and rocks and things there was sand and hills and rings The ocean is a desert with it's life underground And a perfect disguise above Under the cities lies a heart made of ground But the humans will give no love You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name It felt good to be out of the rain In the desert you can remember your name 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain La, la la la la ... (A Horse wiyh no name Written by Dewey Bunnell) Trollope, Should I named the picture "A Horse with no Name"!? |

[#5905] TO: The two Ts _______________ Just a few quick words. Really glad to finally meet up with you and your family. Wish we had more time to chat. May be next trip but definite not in Macdonald. Still remember our 10 minutes break in the Virgin Music store and how fast you dashed back to the herd in the super busy street of Time Squire! Enclosed is a picture we took in the USS Intrepid carrier. _______________ ![]() |

[#5910] TO: T for two Hi Tanuski, back from New York to LA not too long ago. Huge delay at JFK Inter'l Airport. Not managed to visit one single music store thereafter in the East Coast, but somehow spent an hour at Harvard Square in Cambridge. Bought two nice collections of essays (George Orwell & Samuel Johnson), so life isn't too bad really. |
