| [#44] MBL FAN CLUB I'm now using MBL 111b driven by Passlab 350.0 + X1. I played along with many speakers before - JVC, Audioplan, Harbeth, Snell, Avalon, Essemble, Audionote, JM Lab, JBL, ATC. Frankly speaking I may not have fully expedited the potential of all these speakers, however I can tell you the MBL 360 degree speaker is one of its kind - it can create one of the most (if not the best) natural sound stage and texture of instruments + vocals. Tonal balance is very good. The mids and highs are liquid with lustre and finesse, right rythm & pace, the lows are articulative provided your power amp can manage it (no problem at all for 350.5). When rightly positioned, music and air just fill up the whole frontwall before you, flowing to you embracing your body and soul. It should be one of the best speaker to produce "pressence" feel. However,you need a real high current power amp to drive it. As such, vacumn tube power is not recommended. Weakness? Power hungry! It's mids & texture is not as seductive as the ATC (which I own for another system)! I'm yet to find a full set MBL pre+power to drive it (VERY expensive even 2nd hand) to see if there's quantum in mid bass performance, let's hope for the coming mark-six lottery........ |

| [#51] MBL FAN CLUB Dear bearbearloo san, This is not an easy question to answer as both speakers are well-designed and deserve a position of their own. Nevertheless, as I have the experience to drive both speakers using the same amp + frontend + listening room, I try to share my experience in more understandable language. We must first understand the fundamental difference of sound for British, French, German & Yankies made speakers - MOST British speaker are heavy and dim, just feel like the weather of London. French sound are more sunny and lively and they do not have big bellies as their British counterpart - they are slim. German speakers, on the other hand, are more tight and solid (I won't say "rationale" as good German speakers are musical); ther are confident without exaggeration, still slim but stronger than their French counterpart. The Yankies, haha..., are exaggerated - such as unlimited supply of "air" and lots of bass to satisfy audiophiles' needs. OK, so what's the conclusion? Technically I won't say MBL overall scores is higher than JMLab (same price comparison of course) but MBL has a unique expression of sound stage and pressence feel of its own which is unique. However, you need the right listening environment and amp to maximize them. However, in passion terms, I would put it this way: JMLab is like 章子怡, young, slim but not thin, and seducing too. MBL is more like Gong-Li, good 肉地 but not fat, taut and tastety. Which one do you like? |

| [#52] MBL FAN CLUB Hi fat_b san, I won't say a full MBL system "sweet". The system will express a seductive mid-range with good tonal balance. For my personal taste, I can accept such expression for pops. I don't know about you; if you refer to more exciting expression of "pop sound", MBL may not be your cup of tea. As I said in my chats with bearbearloo san, European speakers are more elegant and cultural in their expression and good for classical music. For more exciting expression, you may look for Yankies made (e.g. Watt + Puppy, old JBLs). |

| [#53] MBL FAN CLUB I have been using 1531 CDP for a year now. I have tested several power cord & interconnect with the player and ended with the following conclusion: Power cord: Ruby Hill G6 SATT has the most significant upgrade, but I settled for Furutech Alpha and it's more balance and only 1/5 the price. Interconnect: Silver cables are a very good choice to get the best balance. I settled for US made PureNote, it's a similar performance as the AN Sogon, but 1/3 of the price. (though little second hand market in HK). Hope this helps new 1531 players. |

| [#56] MBL FAN CLUB To all dear users of MBL 101, I have been informed by a second hand shop selling a used 101D that the original owner gave up because the speaker cannot produce enough base even it was driven with a pair of 9010 (the previous version of current top model 9011). While I am using a 111b that is well driven by a Pass Labs 350.5 singly, I just wonder if the 101 is that difficult to drive (even with MBL's top grade power amp??), or else that the said previous owner had not positioned the speaker well with proper room acoustic? I really like to hear the experience from existing 101 users, either the speaker is driven with MBL or other brand gear. Looking forward for your sharing. Thanks. |
