[#596] My charlize2 is back in action... ...and my tube amps are collecting dust.. the last few months I have been struggling between tube amps and...my old love - Charlize2 (a ta2020 amp). I have a heavily modded 300b, a direct coupled 71a globe amp, and a miniwatt type smps power triode amp. My speakers are Bastanis open baffle built from the kit. Charlize2 has somethign special but then it does sound a bit "hard" on my speaker which has 100db sensitivity and a horn tweeter. I did the following tweak to the charlize and it turned from the worst sounding amp in my room to now the best unit (yes, the tube amps are collecting dust, which has permalloy cows, treasure mesh plate tubes, vcap cutf coupling, all film cap power...etc goodies in it). The 71a globe direct coupled amp has 7 cows in it and i am using rca vintage ux-171a on them. 1) Add a 26 DHT tube amp (without output transformer). 2) Revisted Michael Mardis t-amp site and noted TA2020 has a rising high frequency response on high resistive load. My bastanis is 16ohm and is going to give a bright sound and could sound very forward on some recordings. So I added a 16ohm resistor in parallel to the speaker output, to cheat the amp into seeing a 8ohm load. 3) add a 4.7ohm resistor in series to the speaker output to lower the damping factor a bit. 4) use EMI/RF shielding paper (ERS from Stillpoint) to shield the 4 aircore inductors on the charlize2. 5) Bought a like-new linear Kingrex psu, and threw away the shamshuipo smps. All these 5 mods turn the worst sounding amp to now the best. BAsically it adds a ton of warmth to the sound especially choir and vocal, attenuated the HF fowardness on wrong speaker impedance. Soundstage go deeper and everythign has a rounded nature to it. Vocal becomes much meatier, everything become much more organic. my goodness.

[#598] My charlize2 is back in action... i find out that many t-amp users, especially those who own ta2024 and ta2020, becoz of its low power, like to match it with sensitive fullrange speaker drivers. I like these very much, but many of them has 16ohm norminal impedance, the actual impedance at 10khz and above can shoot up higher like 20ohm oor above. Usually these drivers also will have an already peaky response becoz of whizzer cone and beaming. So added these to t-amp's own rising HF response when with high impedance load, the result can be a disastar. So matching between fullrange (high impedance version) and t-amp must be careful. I only discovered this effect lately after using t-amp for so long

[#599] My charlize2 is back in action... this impedance mismatch problem did not occur to me before becoz i was using charlize2 with some vintage german speakers which have 5ohm impedance norminal. I did not find them bright though they didn't sound like tube in the sense of softness.Only when i changed to 16ohm drivers of very high efficiency I started to note charlize2's forwardness, which can be contained.

[#600] My charlize2 is back in action... ackcheng hing, the ucd is still with me, driving my 18" dipole Bastanis woofer with an e-xover for below 100hz. What are you using these days?

[#601] My charlize2 is back in action... then i also spent time playing with the value of the series resistor at the -ve terminal. 1.5ohm -> a bit softer but still can sound a bit hard on some bright recordings such as the "Extreme Sound" CD. 2.5ohm -> even softer and much of the hardness is gone even with the bright cd 4.7ohm -> very nice, almost velvet like presentation that reminds me of old 300B tube (or old Eico EL84 pp amp) sound but more dynamic. But this 4.7ohm also eats up a lot of power form the charlize2 as on some very dynamic passage (such as Britten symphony on Reference Recording CD) a clipping distortion can be heard sometimes. So bascially swapping in and out of different resistor values (hence changing the damping between charlize2 and speaker) resembles a bit like power tube rolling. so much fun. You can dial in the sound you want with different resistor value (have not played with brands yet) In all cases, I did not notice (even if there should be) a drop in clarity and resolution/nuances when resistor value goes up. On one or two of the bright CDs (that has many trumpet and saxophone sound) getting a 4.7ohm resistor literally remove "all" the hardness in the mid band. so the lowering of damping not only has audible effect on bass but also in all other bands. There is no loss in HF details, but a touch of softness is added along. I know of this resistor/damping tweak for quite some years but never really become too serious about it. Change of my speakers reveal so much more in my chain and now i can hear difference in components change easier.

[#602] My charlize2 is back in action... Hi Welborne, I am using class AB amp. My setup is 70% done, would like to invite you to come over. Are you free over the weekends? Compared to last time when it was only 10%, the difference is great
