[#6330] Richter on Vanguard Haydn: Piano Sonata in E flat, Hob.XVI/49 Debussy: Four Preludes from Book I Prokofiev: Suggestion diabolique, op. 4 no. 4 Sviatoslav Richter [1961] Vanguard (The Historical Series) ATM-CD-1586: ADD 2005 Not to be missed, the Adagio cantabile in the Haydn sonata alone will more than defray one's cost. For Richter's rendition of Haydn's Piano Sonata No. 49, this Vanguard CD is currently the sole provider. The pieces from Debussy's Preludes Book 1 and Prokofiev's Suggestion diabolique are also valuable both in terms of performance and discographical importance. The 1961 audience at the Palais de Chaillot behaved not ideally, pity. Background hiss is a problem. The recorded sound is otherwise warmly reverberant, definition not remarkable but more than acceptable. And, let's hope nobody will be discouraged by the short playing time of 43'07. From the booklet essay: "A Richter recital, whether of familiar or neglected works, is always a voyage of discovery, and leaves the listeners with a transformed and deepened view of the works heard. Of Prokofiev, among the moderns, Richter is an especially dedicated interpreter. He gave the first concert performance of the Seventhe Piano Sonata, and Profofiev dedicated his Ninth Sonata to Richter. Typical of Richter is the present program: a great but quite 'unbrilliant' Haydn sonata, rarely heard in concert, which Richter discloses to be one of his most moving, meditative and profound keyboard works; a Debussy group in which Richter finds not only impressionist color but a deep inwardness of feeling; and a homage to Prokofiev." This 2005 CD was previously released in 1994 (OVC 8076). My A/B blind-test just now found them indistinguishable. Unlike those CDs from Parnassus which are intended largely for Richter enthusiasts, this Vanguard will satisfy all but the finicky general collectors. ![]()

[#6333] Richter's Ravel I see. I hope you don't find it difficult to live with the mid-fifties recordings in the Parnassus set. For late and a whole lot better recorded Richter's Ravel, you may wish to try "Sviatoslav Richter Out of Later Years, Vol II" on Live Classics (LCL 472), recorded in 1994. To see Richter in action playing Ravel, look for a DVD from VAI (4213).

[#6334] Richter's Ravel Never try with this label, but I am fine with those historical recordings. For instance, I am fine with Schnabel's Beethoven workss in 30s, first issued by HMC, re-mastered by Naxos.
