這首集合了兩樣我最愛的樂器,因為羅斯托波維契的才華使得蕭士塔高維契受到感動寫下這首showpiece(同時也是一首masterpiece)。

[#6783] A rare Milstein's 1953 Tchaikovsky George1977, You mentioned in your message of 07-08-30 10:26 Milstein's Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with VPO and Abbado (1973) being your favourite version of this work. A recent issue, which was introduced in RTHK4's CD Gallery about an hour ago, may interest you too. I am copying this from the CD blurb: "Of Milstein's four recordings of the Tchaikovsky Concerto, the rarest up to now has been this 1953 version recorded in Boston, which, outside the USA, was released only in France. Milstein plays beautifully and the performance also benefits from fiery conducting by Munch, himself a distinguished former violinist. The encores with Arthur Fiedler include three works by Mendelssohn, Schubert and Foster which are unique to Milstein's discography. The disc concludes with two rarities in which Milstein also performs as a vocalist, in effect both playing the violin and duetting with the Italian bass Ezio Pinza in Calm as the Night and None But the Lonely Heart." It's a Naxos Historical release (2007, ADD, playing time 70:30). ![]()

[#6789] Richter's Rach2 in 1971? Thanks for the photos, George1977. [1] My guess is that Salzburg & 1971 are two pieces of data that belong to the Preludes ONLY. I have these 1971 Salzburg Preludes in both JVC (VICC-22004) and Regis (1022). [2] It's highly unlikely that the Rach2 there was recorded in Salzburg in 1971 too, as you can see that it's mentioned in your LP that it's from a USSR original. Besides, (a) I have checked the playing time of each movement in my two CD versions (Leningrad, 1959): very similar to your LP; and (b) wouldn't it be unusual for the Leningrad Philharmonic to perform in Salzburg in 1971?

[#6791] Ryuichi Sakamoto 1996 A compilation of the soundtrack composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto, who rearranges his previous cinematic works in a piano trio (with the accompany of violin and cello) is one of my all-time favourite album, he plays the pieces with a chamber-like jazz style and some quirky sound, you can listen clearly that the nuance are influenced and inspired by Ravel, Satie (one of my beloved composers) and Debussy. Beautifully played and well recorded, this japanese reissue (2007) encompasses some serene sonority and timeless melody with elegance and instrospection, every time I play this album, it makes me recalling the film scene of "Last Emperor", "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence & High Heels)! Highly recommended! ![]()

[#6793] Two CDs of Milstein in the 1940s Here we have Milstein's 1940 Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Frederick Stock. But to me the finest performance in this Biddulph CD (released 1992) is Mozart's Violin Sonata in C, K.296 with Artur Balsam on the piano (recorded 1939). While Milstein's career spanned nearly seven decades, it is generally held that he was at the peak of his powers in the 1940s and 1950s. His 1946 Library of Congress Recital remains an important, and interesting, part of his recorded legacy. It opens with Tomaso Vitali's (attrib.) Chaconne for violin and piano, followed by Bach's Sonata in G minor, BWV 1001 for solo violin. Milstein is a lifelong champion of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, having recorded the entire set twice (mid 1950s and mid 1970s) in the studio. The later version on DG which he recorded at the age of 71 is the one he himself preferred. He described it as "more improvisational". The third item for that evening is Milstein's own solo transcriptions of themes from various Paganini works. I find this 9-minute piece hugely enjoyable, but something more interesting is to follow. It is Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with the orchestral part in a piano reduction, something rather unthinkable today; but the CD booklet tells us that it was common practice in the old days. During the 1920s, for instance, Milstein frequently played violin concertos with Horowitz offering the piano accompaniment. The two encores are no less fascinating, esp the first item: Chopin's Nocturne in C sharp minor, in Milstein's arrangement. ![]()

Absolutely agreed with your remark that Milstein was at his peak during 1940s -1950s, however the sonic quality is not optimal as his late version, still the artistic value prevails if the greatest performance is greatest! Everyday I surf on this thread, I keep learning from you about the album background and historic status ! So educational and academic this thread because of you! Sometimes I wonder whether Trollope is a music or literature professor at university!?
