[#702] MyTek Stereo 192 DSD DAC My first LP/DSD recording. The TAPE out of Pre-Amp is connected to the unbalanced input of DA3000. Recording media is a CF card and encoding is DSD64. The first take was a failure because the gain was too high, so I adjusted the input vol. to -6db. The max hit around -3db throughout the recording, no idea if it's a good practise or not. The second take was not good neither because of dust on the LP. I took the third take. Overall the steps are not too difficult. It also creates new track file whenever I press the RECORD button during recording. That certainly saves time on track splitting. I think it serves right my initial idea, that making a 'un-attended' recording for every LP. Playback goes though SDIF-3 to MyTek, I'm definitely not a golden ear, not much different to me. Some note: There is a max. 2GB limitation on the track size. So the max track length is 44min for DSD. I think it should be enough for recording one side of LP. I also tried DSD128 recording at the end, but the recorded file is mute when playback, even though the gauge is moving, may look into this next time. ![]() 最後修改時間: 2013-10-13 18:15:23

[#706] MyTek Stereo 192 DSD DAC This morning I tried to convert a Elaine Paige's LP but failed. I did it several times, adjusted different gain settings but still her voice was distorted on the edge. I thought it's the TAPE OUT issue, but connecting a headphone amp proved that there was nothing wrong. It doesn't seems relating to the actual recording process as I was using standby mode. Tonight I tried this, it seems okay, I absolutely have no idea why it is. DSD recording is no magic, at most the result is very close to the LP output. The transfer is really garbage in garbage out, I think I should spend time on doing a better LP cleaning. ![]() 最後修改時間: 2013-10-27 01:23:58

[#707] MyTek Stereo 192 DSD DAC I am quite addicted to 'mono' recordings in the past few months, mainly influenced by a few R33 ching. I always wonder what makes mono so attractive. So far my guess is the sorority, the texture and mostly because of perception change. In stereo playback, spatial reproduction is one of the important criteria to measure the quality. For example, can we feel how the player was moving his/her body, or even can you sense his/her presence in front of us, etc. It's kindly of diversifying the listener's attention, to the sense of 'reality'. In mono playback, however, spatial perception disappears, only the sound remains. I think the difference is similar to attach a mic on the instrument itself, instead of in front of the player. So the listener has full attention to the sound, which results fascinating perception dedicated to the instrument In MyTek, there is a 'Mono' function, that can be assigned to F2. It adds left and right channel together. If you're listening to instrument solo, you can try it and see if you like the change or not. ![]() 最後修改時間: 2013-10-27 11:16:56

[#709] MyTek Stereo 192 DSD DAC I'm a poor concert audience, can only afford balcony seat. In solo recital, the piano or violin is just a point to me. I never sense the left hand or right hand position 'visually'. This is probably best to describe the 'mono' experience here. The sound seems coming from vertical line a bit more behind the centre of two speakers. But since everything is coming from the same 'source', somewhat it generates a bit more impact, especially on thick chord. Maybe someone sitting on the front rows in a concert usually can share his/her experience? For normal stereo playback, surely we sense the movement of 'left' and 'right' hands . This creates a keyboard, kind of 'floating' in the front. This is the magic of stereo playback and probably what audiophiles are all fascinating on. Nevertheless, for people who love to argue the standard of high fidelity, where is the best position to sit on the concert hall or recording studio to 'see' the left or right hands via hearing in reality? Anyway, there is no extra cost or any software requirement, try if you like it or not. 最後修改時間: 2013-10-28 19:03:27

[#710] MyTek Stereo 192 DSD DAC A few notes on the DA3000 - USB HDD doesn't seem to work, even with external PS. Since I have no intention to use it anyway, doesn't really matter to me - bought a 266x 8GB CF (HKD99), no problem on DSD64 recording - bought a 64GB USB3 for HKD290, work fine, also use a L-shape adapter to have it installed in sideway. - use the jog dial to edit the filename is just horribly difficult, of course attaching a keyboard can help, but I prefer to do it in the computer while backing up the recorded files. Overall, it is not really consumer-friendly. For example, the filename does not scroll in the panel during playback (it does during the selection though). The included remote control does not support the jog dial control. Tascam publishes tested removable media in their official FAQ. Apparently 128GB CF or USB are supported. ![]() 最後修改時間: 2013-10-30 21:38:33

[#711] MyTek Stereo 192 DSD DAC Another issue on using the DA3000 with MyTek. I'm using MyTek CLK OUT to DA3000 CLK IN. If the input on MyTek is switched from SDIF-3 to AES, everything works fine. But if the input is switched from AES to SDIF-3, there is no output from MyTek. There is nothing in LED gauge. Then, power-off the MyTek and restart it, it resumes normal. I contacted MyTek support. As their Tascam is on-loan, they will look into this 1 month later. It's not a deadly issue, just inconvenient. BTW, the panel display does support Chinese characters, at least some, but very ugly. ![]() 最後修改時間: 2013-11-03 09:04:14

[#715] Horowitz: Pictures at the Exhibitions, 1947 Today I tried the transfer of Horowitz's Pictures at the Exhibition (1947). I want to do it for quite sometimes cause I want to know the difference between the mono CD and LP. Initially I want to wait until I can use the AT mono cartridge but anyway, my turntable's problem has gone so I gave it a shot. I am not familiar with the piece actually. I know nothing about Hartmann's pictures, nor Slavic cultures, such as Baba-Yagà nor did I go to Jardin des Tuileries. Luckily there is Wiki so I read it today while doing the transfer. Usual setting for recording, most significant finding today is that there is no "stereo" cracking sound during playback on the mono recording by using the mono switch in th DAC. (It is strange to hear crack on the left and then on the right). Everything is focused on the central. It may be a workaround to simulate a mono cartridge using a stereo cartridge. I guess the effect is the same for mono switch in the Pre-amp. My LP's condition is not that good, a lot of crackings, but fortunately the details are still there, such as the roaring of cattle and when Horowitz depicts that it was moving away, as well as the scene of catacomb, its stillness and the silence. Moussorgsky's imagination is unbelievable. I don't feel anything grandeur when looking at the painting. Anyway, Horowitz just did the magic and this is one of the major difference between the LP/DSD transfer and CD. The piano is groaning via CD, but there are layers and micro-dynamic via LP. I felt something mighty is portrayed. In fact, in the beginning CD was quite good. Mid and high range are clean. But when moving on, it is not that lively. The LP/DSD, even though there are lots of defect, is more musical and better in conveying the virtuoso of Horowitz. In the future, I really want to try mono cartridge, and probably better LP cleaning method. ![]() 最後修改時間: 2013-11-10 18:52:49

[#716] MyTek Stereo 192 DSD DAC Dvmrp Hing, Would you mind to advise if Tascam SS-R200 will be good for recording or not? Or DA3000 is the best choice? Regards, Tony

[#717] MyTek Stereo 192 DSD DAC Tony hing, I'm just a newbie, not sure if my opinion is useful to you or not. The reason I choose this is because of, 1. PCM up to 24/192, DSD recording 2. SDIF-3 interface, to mute with MyTek DSD so that there is no need to go through PC to playback the recording. SS-R200 can only record at PCM 16/44.1, not something I want. Also, it don't even have WCK IN/OUT.

[#718] MyTek Stereo 192 DSD DAC Now is over 1 month of using DA3000. I just want to share a bit on my impression. Comparing to JPlay, it is more 'neutral'. Many recordings do sound very nice and wonderful through JPlay. Using DA3000, more often I thought, hmm, this disc is too bright, this one is not very energetic, this one sounds really marvellous, etc Anyway, I don't have to choose since they are connecting to Mytek using different ports. I can switch between file-based synchronous playback or asynchronous playback of both PCM and DSD. I am quite satisfied with the progress so far. 最後修改時間: 2013-11-17 21:50:20

However, there is zee zee sound on the background when using DSD mode, whereas it will be normal when it is in 174Hz mode. Any ching know what the problem is and how to fix it? thanks in advance. |
