[#64] QUAD ESL speaker service I purchased a Graaf GM 20 OTL amp a few months ago to drive my ESL-989 in Shenzhen. I was told that the GM 20 would be a perfect match for the ESL-57, the impedence of which dips down to 1.8Ohm at 18KHz. The GM 20 is still in my place in Shatin because bringing it across the border would cost me big bucks (China Customs have smartened up --- they look up to be taxed odd ball items on the Internet). Would somebody here want to give it a shot?

[#66] QUAD ESL speaker service If you are using a OTL tube amp to drive the ESL, you should look at the ZERO transformer. http://www.zeroimpedance.com/index.html

[#67] QUAD ESL speaker service The link recommends the use of Zero transformer for speakers which is 8 ohm or less. But ESL-57 is 16 ohm or more!

[#70] QUAD ESL speaker service Dear timtube, For a OTL tube amplifier, the higher the impedance the better ( within limits ). The distortion will be lower and the power will be higher.

[#71] QUAD ESL speaker service Back in the 60's, there was a classical music session held in a restaurant name Ruby Cafe on every Saturday evening. It was hosted by a famous Radio HK DJ name 陳浩才 and the speakers used were Quad ESL57. I was a kid at that time and did not get a chance to participate because I was unable to afford it. Any brother knows anything above that. Would appreciate you share with us please.

[#73] Selling my pair of QUAD ESL-63 They have been sitting idle for at least 3 years and I have not had a chance to check them out. You are welcome to come to my place in Shatin and have a peek at them. $$$ wise, I think the going rate is somewhere in the neighborhood of $3.8-5K.

[#74] Tim's ESL57 Hi Tim Will you set up your ESL57 when I am in HK on 13th Nov? I will be there for 2 weeks. It will be great to listen to the ESL57 with any vintage valve amps. Regards Hon

[#76] Tim's ESL57 Wow!!! My pair of ESL57 start to sing!!! It is marvellous!!! Very clear, analytical, musical with wide soundstage. Using my Naim Nait 1 with satisfactory result. Will connect to Quad II later! Found positioning the speaker quite difficult. Esp my living room is small. But surely better than my Proac, JR149 (I don't have LS3/5A)

[#77] Tim's ESL57 I have tried different position. Seems not understand how to make the bass better (I know it is not a pair of speaker with strong base). How is others' experience?

[#78] Tim's ESL57 Hi, powercord, I truely appreciate sharing your wonderful experience with ESL speakers. The position of ESL is very trick indeed. My experience is: 1) to get good and quality bass, lift up the speakers at least 10' to 12" from the floor. You must invest on a quality stands for your ESL. The stock feet are not bad but taller stands sound better. 2) if smaller room, spread the two speakers as far as possible, but leaving the side rails say at least 6" away from side walls. 3) toe in the speakers if big mouth, but over toeing will possibly result with muddy sound. Thru trial, my best toe in angle is making the axis of both speaker centres pointing towards my ears. 4) Leave ample rare space, I have left the ESL at least 5 feet from my rear window. The further away from rear, more clarity we get. There is some discussion and illustration on positioning from internet. Type QUAD ESL positioning, you should get more comments. Enjoy. Dennis

[#79] Tim's ESL57 I have good listening experience with solid state or tube amp. But please keep the ESL away from the power plant amp, the big amp, say over 40W, will damage (they call arcing) your esl easily. I amusing QUAD II and Cyrus III tod drive my ESL. So far so wonderful.
