[#61] AudioNote Ongaku - I am in pain! JC, Thanks! You are indeed the Big Brother. Peter, Since you mentioned 86A, I would highly recommend the Shindo Richebourg 300B Push-Pull. http://www.shindo-laboratory.co.jp/English/Riche300B.html Or, with the Horning, just go for the 300B Limited (8-Watt monobloc). Ken Shindo is probably the last well-known Tube Meister still alive in Japan. Kanno, Kondo and Shishido (where Wavac's circuit comes from) all passed away already. Since you have Kondo, tasting the creation of Ken Shindo is a natural thing to do. Besides, his company has only 3 people including himself, his wife and not sure if that's his son (never asked). So this is a purely personal creation and that's what luxury is all about :-) |

[#62] AudioNote Ongaku - I am in pain! Peter, To answer your other questions. I am still in the first few hours of the RCA211. The sound is constantly changing. The first few minutes was insanely great, then they closed in and only gradually they are opening up again. Will see in a weeks time :-) As to the volume issue, it's just that I can only listen after 9pm-ish, after my kids are in bed, and I can only play at low volume. That means the volume on the Ongaku is between the 2nd or 3rd step. 2nd is too soft and everything sounded muffled and 3nd is a tad too loud. I think the muffled sound is due to the nature of resister-based attenuator and I am experimenting w/ having a transformer based volume control where it's essentially a step-down transformer. The theory is that for low volume, the current is increased and details are not lost. But by great mistake, I sold one of my KSL-LP interconnct thinking my simple system of CD12-Ongaku won't need more than a pair of KSL-LP. Yikes, and now I need a second pair to put the transformer pre back in. I had the transformer pre (called Django from DIY Hi-Fi Supplies) for a while, and it's essentially transparent and works as advertised. I was using that w/ my FM411. Luckily Brother JC promised to lend me his OTA cables to let me try the theory out. I did attempted w/ lesser cable, but the cable was the problem. If I have to buy a pair of KSL-LP again for this, that will be totally silly. Maybe I really should try the Argento cables this time..... |

[#64] AudioNote Ongaku - I am in pain! Hi Mat, include a preamp will solve your problem, but it will certainly compromise the clarity, immediacy and dynamic of the Ongaku.I don't exactly get what's behind the theory, are you trying to bypass(turn up to the full stretch of the Ongaku volume pot)the pot and use a transformer in front of the amp acting as a volume control so that the Ongaku can be in full steam while controlling the sound level at will. You mentioned the KSL-LP, I'm using them but I'd had little experience with other makes of hi-end cables, can you tell me why you love the KSL, do I have other choices at the KSL's price level or higher. |

[#65] AudioNote Ongaku - I am in pain! JC Big Brother, The OTA is indeed very very good. It loses out to KSL-LP a little in terms of clarity, speed and harmonic strucutre, but that's about it. Very simple cable, very good sound. Peter, You have the theory right, though given most volume control sounds the best around 10-12 o'clock position, that where I left both. I think if I have one more KSL-LP, I will be totally fine with that arrangement. In terms of why I like KSL-LP, I think it's more the case of there isn't anything I don't like. Beyond that, I think it's the fact that it has little or no coloration, fast, dynamic and most importantly it has the best harmonic structure and decay that I have heard, not that I have heard that many. The only serious A/B comparison I had w/ other cables is the LP against Argento Serenity. The LP did win by some margin, but it's double the price of Serenity. I may try a Serenity Reference if I get a chance. I think the Argento are slightly warmer, and it terms of microdynamics, even the cheaper Serentiy is close to the LP level. Though the SMR is a bit too expensive for me. |

[#66] AudioNote Ongaku - I am in pain! Hi MatthewC, Good to know that the OTA cable stood up to the fight with the AN KSL-LP, cost 5 times more, if not higher. I would love to also compare the KSL-LP with OTA in my system and see if I need to consider using them too. Will you be free this Sat? |

[#77] AudioNote Ongaku - I am in pain! Commonguy Hing, sorry I have not responded promptly to you in the thread cause I was busy lately, the usual hi-fi business of course. It's really joyful to meet some guys who have experience with hi-fi gears you are playing with, you know, hi-fi experience is expensive it could be even more expensive than a CEO time-figure out how much you have spent in the past years in buying gears either not live up with your taste or not match with your existing gear.By the way, do I know you in person. Talk to you later. |

[#78] AudioNote Ongaku - I am in pain! Hi Matthew, how's the Ongaku going, forgot to mention about the 4 little tubes in the Ongaku, the 2x5687 are critical, early 50's Tung-sol is the best, forget about the Sylvania and the later Phillips Jan, believe me, you'll get a 20-30% improvement in the Tung-sol.Peter |

[#79] AudioNote Ongaku - I am in pain! Peter, No luck w/ the Tung-sol 5687 yet. I have so for only secured: Sylvania Gold nickel pin 5687 and 1963 GE black plate JG-6072A. Will look for the tung-sol..... The Ongaku is working beautifully. I recently replaced my pc for the Linn CD12, the whole thing is now making serious music :-) |
