[#8182] Britten: War Requiem, Maazel Wow, Kei hing, you are a tenor? It must be a memorable experience to participate such an event. There is quite a number of places that the chorus matches very well with the orchestra. Thank you. :) It is my first time hearing this. I think English and Latin (Human and Divine), Chamber orchestra/solo and Orchestra/chorus, the soprano and boy chorus. Lots of contrast to keep us awake :) May be getting a Japanese and Chinese to sing the tenor and baritone even better but probably it will become more serious, Anyway, I don't understand Latin, the most striking lyric is the two words "strange friend". I do wonder what would be the conversation between the murdered and murder in the Heaven, if the murder is converted before he died. 最後修改時間: 2013-11-09 08:46:15 |

[#8183] Horowitz: Pictures at the Exhibitions, 1947 Today I tried the transfer of Horowitz's Pictures at the Exhibition (1947). I want to do it for quite sometimes cause I want to know the difference between the mono CD and LP. Initially I want to wait until I can use the AT mono cartridge but anyway, my turntable's problem has gone so I gave it a shot. I am not familiar with the piece actually. I know nothing about Hartmann's pictures, nor Slavic cultures, such as Baba-Yagà nor did I go to Jardin des Tuileries. Luckily there is Wiki so I read it today while doing the transfer. Usual setting for recording, most significant finding today is that there is no "stereo" cracking sound during playback on the mono recording by using the mono switch in th DAC. (It is strange to hear crack on the left and then on the right). Everything is focused on the central. It may be a workaround to simulate a mono cartridge using a stereo cartridge. I guess the effect is the same for mono switch in the Pre-amp. My LP's condition is not that good, a lot of crackings, but fortunately the details are still there, such as the roaring of cattle and when Horowitz depicts that it was moving away, as well as the scene of catacomb, its stillness and the silence. Moussorgsky's imagination is unbelievable. I don't feel anything grandeur when looking at the painting. ![]() Anyway, Horowitz just did the magic and this is one of the major difference between the LP/DSD transfer and CD. The piano is groaning via CD, but there are layers and micro-dynamic via LP. I felt something mighty is portrayed. In fact, in the beginning CD was quite good. Mid and high range are clean. But when moving on, it is not that lively. The LP/DSD, even though there are lots of defect, is more musical and better in conveying the virtuoso of Horowitz. In the future, I really want to try mono cartridge, and probably better LP cleaning method. ![]() 最後修改時間: 2013-11-10 18:53:28 |

[#8185] Horowitz: Pictures at the Exhibitions, 1947 Chi hing, I do have a few so-called 'sealed' mono LPs, e.g. the set below, which I still prefer to wait until that time. I have a mono cartridge and a tonearm, but my current TT doesn't seems to support 2nd tonearm nor I've extra phono amp. I don't have much idea the best way to move on. So, they are still sitting on the shelf, quietly. ![]() |

[#8186] Horowitz: Pictures at the Exhibitions, 1947 Dear dvmrp, The way I see it is that the sealed copies could be more than a music source. Not sure how deep is the value(not nominal as we understand) to you but if I were you I will maintain the status quo. There will be more chances to acquire the same musical experience. As for the your TT set up I guess your arm is with a fixed headshell type so changing the cartridge could be problematic. Since you have an idea of adding another arm why don't you change to the arm with a changeable headshell type? There are plenty to choose from especially in a market like Hong Kong. Isn't your E.A.R. capable of allowing to MC inputs? If not a splitter may be the solution. I also used to have a JA Michell Focus One TT. In Hi-Fi terms, it's very musical and somehow too neutral in some of my music genre. The legs seem to be the weakest point though. ![]() |

[#8188] Horowitz: Pictures at the Exhibitions, 1947 Hi Eric, In my healthier days, for my sin, I had about 20+ LP12 came and gone. At one point I had 5 at the same time and others as well. Now I scale down to just a Lenco, Micro Seiki, Garrad and Rega. I know what you mean by the Martzy sets since my brother in Hong Kong has two sets. Personally I will give it a pass as I already have the original from Columbia. I savaged them when they were destined to the skip from my Uni library. ![]() |

[#8189] Horowitz: Pictures at the Exhibitions, 1947 Chi hing, the sealed copies stuff is just my pathetic thought as I am belong to certain psychological type :) For the splitter, do you mean passive 2-1 RCA switch box? My wish is to add another TT with detachable tonearm, just as what you said. However, I have no idea what it should be. Product today just wants last cent in the pocket. |

[#8190] Horowitz: Pictures at the Exhibitions, 1947 Hi Chi, You are a true LP fans.... Linn LP12 is 40 years old now, still in production... I don't listen to hifi nowadays, but still keep the turntable, I prefer the sound of LP than CD. I always find watching the thing spins interesting, and so does my cat, he jumps onto it once, his merry-go-round.... |

[#8191] Horowitz: Pictures at the Exhibitions, 1947 Dear Eric, Me being a vinyl nut for far too long to remember now. If this is removed from my life it will be like "The Day The Music Dies". Playing with analogue is more than just a tool to spin the plastic but an extended part of my hobby:DIYing. You see I like to touch and feel every component of the system. So much so that I even manage to build some like playing with Mecanno toys as shown here. I know some may laugh their heads off but this is, as I quoted from dvmrp, "I am belong to certain psychological type :)" It adds to my appreciation to the music. ![]() ![]() 最後修改時間: 2013-11-11 01:32:05 |

[#8193] Beethoven Piano Sonata op.13 This week exercise is tough but interesting, Schiff's lecture on op.13, http://www.wigmore-hall.org.uk/sites/default/files/interact/schiff_beethoven_lectures_recitals/08_C_minor_Op._13_Pathetique.mp3 This one is great, again, very clear dissection of the sonata, just eye-opening even though lot of things still not clearly understood. I remember the phrase 'back to the score' are often and widely quoted in many articles. This is also always emphasised by Schiff. He spent substantial time talking about the 1st movement, in particular to the first section, Grave. Firstly he points out that the dotted rhythm goes back to the beginning of Bach Partita No.2, also in C minor. Secondly, he talked about the fortepiano (fp), which should be played loudly and then immediately softly. He explained how to do it and demonstrate the result. To my surprise, among the versions below, only Richard Goode played in this sense of fortepiano. Of course it's just an opinion of a renowned pianist and it does not mean there is any problem on other great pianists. I just wonder if that indicates anything, good or bad, not much idea yet. ![]() BTW, Kempff's and Gould's 1st movement are significantly shorter but it's because the exposition is only played once, not twice. So Kempff's is not fast at all, but Gould really played in blazing speed. ![]() 最後修改時間: 2013-11-14 00:44:15 |

[#8198] Viola ... Dear Ken, 2. Listen to his Bach cello suites played on viola in city hall about a year ago, very nice. http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=BIS-SACD-1783 3. I find this piece a few months ago, still looking for a CD. I like this recording, though not flawless. 4. There are nice viola works by Hummel, eg Fantaaie for Viola and you can search by keyword ‘Hummel Viola’ in youtube 5. To me, Bach Brandengurg Concerto No. 6 is a concerto for 2 viola 6. This is another one I like, 7. You may already note Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante K.364 8. Harold in Italy by Berlioz is another great work, but I seldom listen to it 9. There is viola version on Mozart clarinet concerto 10. If you like the tone quality of viola, you may also like clarinet Again, this is a recording I like. |

[#8200] Gioconda de Vito: Vitali: Chaconne in G minor Thanks Patrick hing. This is a orchestra version of Vitali Chaconne, arranged by Ottorino Respighi, performed at 1948. While Milstein's is inspirative showpiece, this one is more solemn. Unfortunately the surface noise is very high, but fortunately it's not removed and so the harmony is still 'rich'. ![]() Grade **** - Martyz (Korea printed 13 CD set): Bach, Schubert - Haskil Beethoven/Schumannn Piano concerto (Claves 50-2408) - Martyz Mozart/Beethoven Violin Sonata (Tower records, PROA-15) - Heifetz Zigeunerweisen (BSCD2, SICC-30079) - Glenn Partita BWV 829,830 (SICC 10166-7) - David Oistrakh Shostakovich Violin concerto #1 (Sony MHK 63327) - Kempff: Beethoven Piano Sonatas, disc #4 (DG 447 966-2) - Gioconda de Vito: Brahms Violin Sonata #1,3 Grade *** - Gioconda de Vito: Vitali Chaconne, (Korea printed 10 CD set) * Background noise is very high. - Gioconda de Vito: Franck Violin Sonata, (Korea printed 10 CD set) - Kempff: Beethoven Piano Sonatas, disc #1 (DG 447 966-2) - Heifetz: Tchaikovsky Serenade melancolique (Naxos) - Glenn: Goldberg Variation 1956 - Lipatti: Bach/Mozart/Scarlatti/Schubert (Art/GROC) - Dennis Brain Mozart Horn Concertos, EMI 5 56231-2 - Martyz: (Korea Printed 13 CD set): Brahms violin concerto - The Young Martha Argerich, vol.2 (IDIS 6626) - Milstein Lalo Spanish Symphony (Claves 50-2708) Grade ** - Lipatti: Chopin, Art/GROC - Grumiaux/Haskil Beethoven Violin Sonatas (DECCA) - Furtwangler: Brahms Symphony No.4 (TOCE 3792) Grade * - Annie Fischer: Beethoven/Mozart Piano Concerto (Palexa, CD-0515) - Wanda Landowska, Goldberg Variations (RCA 赤盤復刻, BVCC38220) 最後修改時間: 2013-11-16 23:38:12 |
