[#9372] LS3/5A Club "so the zen master took out a flute like instrument and started blowing into it. the sound is not harmonic at all and could probably be regarded noise. " It is obvious those researchers are clueless about creativity. There is nothing wrong with improvisation or spontaneous composition. It happen a lot in Jazz, Rock, and Rap. Sound can be totally chaotic or regard as noise, but it is all about its expression. Music does not have to be in structure format if you can appreciate creativity to be a burst of a moment thing. |

[#9373] LS3/5A Club Music does not have to be in structure format if you can appreciate creativity to be a burst of a moment thing. ----------------------------------------------------- may be, may be not. creativity and insanity is only separated by a thin line:-) i heard that and i must say....... however i do believe music has structure, a structure that resonates human structure. i'm afraid i'm not too over impressed with the modern creations. in fact the whole modern movement of arts. as far as i'm concerned, we are a lost generation. |

[#9374] LS3/5A Club Fellows on the Jazz thread are talking about Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, and late Coltrane. Try a couple of their "free Jazz" CD. You just have to expereince it yourself. OC, ED, JC are all very skilled and polish musician playing totally chaotic sound. They just want to take freedom of expression to their limits. If you dig their music, you will love it. If you don't dig, they are completely trash. And probably, you will be thinking, how can those guys came out of a cd with the way they handle their instrument. Creativity and insanity are actually closely related. Right now....I actually forgot the name of the disc, but on that particular albume Steve Coleman got all his bandmates playing at different tempo. The result of that music is very up beat and funky. Is this normal? No. Is this creative? Yes. I believe one need to be a little insane to think out of the norm sometime :-) |

[#9375] LS3/5A Club I believe one need to be a little insane to think out of the norm sometime :-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Agree X 2! To be creative, one may need to think out of the box..music may not neccessary be structured. |

[#9376] LS3/5A Club Fellows on the Jazz thread are talking about Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, and late Coltrane ------------------------------------------------------ well, i haven't listened to them so i can't comment. who knows i might even like it. If you dig their music, you will love it. If you don't dig, they are completely trash. --------------------------------------------------- now i can't remember which modern artist's painting that i find totally incomprehensible. my friend who is into that sort of things told me, well if you look at it using these rules 1 to 10 then you can interpret this painting. ever since then i just gave up on modern painting. it is not so much that i'm lazy but it is out of philosophical ground that i reject this types of arts. remember i said about resonance of human nature. i believe arts is so much in grain in human nature that anyone can recognise it. it has an universal characteristics. if it needs 10 volumes to explain it, i think we lost it already. The result of that music is very up beat and funky. Is this normal? No. Is this creative? Yes. I believe one need to be a little insane to think out of the norm sometime :-) -------------------------------------------------- i think there is too crap coming out in name of creativity in the modern arts scene. having required to come up with solutions everyday to solve real life problems, i must say people put too much emphasis on so called 'creativity'. creativity by the definition of it is an act of coming up something out of nothing. it is everywhere in the universe. everyone has it. it has nothing to do with just arts. and i must say it is 90% of sweat and 10% of luck for most creations in the history of man kind. enough ranting for an old man. |

[#9377] LS3/5A Club I do not believe in resonance of the human nature as such, but I firmly believe that art, in whatever form it takes, has to be understood and meant to be understood by people with average power of appreciation. If not, the artist is probably insane and his creation is nothing more than trash in disguise for the equally insane. |

[#9378] LS3/5A Club I do not believe in resonance of the human nature as such ---------------------------------------------------- i don't mean physically resonate. but I firmly believe that art, in whatever form it takes, has to be understood and meant to be understood by people with average power of appreciation. If not, the artist is probably insane and his creation is nothing more than trash in disguise for the equally insane. -------------------------------------------------- this i can't agree more. this is what i meant by resonance ie can be felt by us poor humans. |

[#9379] LS3/5A Club 12 tone school and serial music extended, or dadaism reincarnated? It happens in every period. Fact is whether they eventually come out in popular repertory. |

[#9381] LS3/5A Club Doc, I would love to learn more about contemporary art. Most of the painting, I have no idea what those guys are painting about, but for some reason I like looking at it. It has a very real but psychedelic feel to it. I figure if I cannot get high myself, it is much better to find it somewhere else. :-) |
