[#81] Benchmark DAC2 Fans Club When using external 12v, there is no need to connect the AC of DAC2 anymore. The switching power supply was completely disconnected for the main board. To me, the 12v external power source is only a termporary solution. When you look at the main board carefully, there are jumpers for 1.2v, 3.3v, 3.9v, 5v, +18v and -18v. When removing the corresponding jumper, you can feed in your own power for a particular voltage. Benchmark is actually encourage DIYer to provide DAC2 with independent isolated power source for each voltage or the designer of DAC2 is running his own DAC2 with a more sophisticated power supply. I am going to build an ultimate power supply for my DAC2 and I forsee third-party power supply will be launched in the near future. My Blackgate capacitors were purchased a few years ago and have ceased production. Hi Steven ching,

Thanks a lot for your explanation! With the help of photo, it is very detail and useful.

This design is quite clever that it gives room for DIYer to improve the power supply without destroying the default PCB setting. I guess each jumper just connecting the output (+ve) of corresponding voltage regulator to the load, so just take out the jumper, find the pin of the load, and connect to the output of DIYer's voltage regulator then it is done.

For third party mod to commercialize, I think it's not easy. At least, it requires user to ship their dac2 to the company that provides the mod service, wait for two weeks, and ship back the modded dac2 (may be with a box of external linear PSU).

I am newbie to the DIY (and hifi) and I see in r33 discussion that some of the capacitors already not manufactured anymore. Personally I have not tried or listened to the sound of blackgate (versus the original). I hope that I could have a chance in future to know more about the taste of this brand.

Hi Chings,

I'm new to the DAC products but I'm interested in this DAC2 as it can be used as both DAC and preamp to drive my power amp (currently I'm using Cyrus with build-in dac as a preamp). However, I'm not really into the high res files or CAS, so my main use for it will be via CD transport or apple TV. My question is that since the bit rate from CD player is only 44.1khz, would I get sound improvement through a quality dac like the DAC2 through optical/ coxial cables? Or is DAC2 actually designed focusing high res audio on the CAS via USB cable?

Hope the experienced Chings can answer my question, thanks.

Just my two cents, half or more the money for dac2 goes to high-res file + usb + DSD. If you just play 44.1 / 48k most of the time, buying it is wasting money. However, it gives you room for supporting new source device which such with high res / DSD via USB.

It is so sure that you will get sound improvement through a quality DAC although you just use CDT connect it with cheap Optical cable. The core of the DAC is the Chipset used to decode the signal.

As people are talking about setup problems, usb problems, fireware problems, never ending firmware updates, all kinds of limitations and its uesless clock input on Mytek. DAC2 is still new and/or so smooth to make it running.

As my existing 12v power supply was occupied by Benchmark. I still need one for my ATOM PC and Voyage Starter Kit. Just used some old parts to assemble a 土砲牛 with Furutech Socket, 英國有殼環牛, 英國fuse & holder, 6N cable, Harmond Choke, Blackgate大水塘, Linear Technology LM338K regulator and Neutrik XLR connectors. It should also be good for Benchmark. 正所謂吾打得都睇得.

It is time consuming to set up all the required voltages. Within those voltages, the effects of +18v and -18v should be the most obvious as they are used by all opamps. My first test aims to replace +/-18v by a shunt regulated bipolar power supply with CCS current adjusted to @400ma.

Will let you guys know the result next week.

One more tweak before +-/18v replacement. As recommended by batmanamesIA ching, I should try the xlr to RCA connection. As there are two independent sets of RCA in DAC2, you can simply float one set and connect them to the pin 2 +ve of the corresponding xlr. (where pin 1 is the common ground and pin 3 is for -ve).

As a result, you have two set of RCA outputs. The as usual one and the other set is converted from xlr. I have no preference on which set. But, the 'converted from xlr' has the feasibility to adjust gain to match your pre-amp/active speakers/direct connection to power amp.

Before connecting it to your equipment, just check whether any DC coming out. If yes, there must be something wrong.

For the xlr to RCA connection, -10db and -20db 都唔好聲. The as usual RCA and 0db xlr to RCA 都好好聲. But 0db seems a bit loud for my preamp/power amp combo 但喺又幾個隱.

反覆試了幾晚用外置+-18v同原裝嘅分別. 用外置主要背景比較靜少少,但最可惜又失去了寶貴嘅音樂感. 最後都喺fallback to original. 我覺得音樂感先至喺CAS最重要一環, 通常CAS會比人覺得滖水碌腳咁, 唱完即走.

為了加強音樂感及改善聲尾, 最後加番幾粒Jensen同換了對WBT RCA Socket. 同時發現部DAC嘅Left channel喺用個殼
來落'地'. 改番走電線正路啲.
