[#83] Using subwoofer in a 2-channel system degnuf bro, I have the same question. I am getting the REL strata 5 next week. Hopefully I can connect the high-level input directly to my speakers.

[#84] Using subwoofer in a 2-channel system Hi H2005 Your REL manual have detail instruction on how to connect the High Level Input to Amplifier. I also make reference to it when making the connection. High Level Input should be better than using Preamp to LFE cause the signals will be the same as the pair of speaker which make full integration easier. Any way its a trial and error experience. I am also trying both ways to see which is better.

[#85] Using subwoofer in a 2-channel system However, if the Strata 5 is using Speakon connector, I am afraid the cable need to be DIY. In HK, I find an acquaintaned Hi Fi technician to make for me.

[#86] Using subwoofer in a 2-channel system Each REL subwoofer should come with a new set of Speakon Cable. It is very very easy to DIY. I never use my REL Speakon cable as I DIY one using a 13 AWG electric cord. Then, I buy an after-market Speakon cable later. Degnuf; Your velodyne should be hooked up to your amp. That means, your amp would have speaker cables to your main speakers, and also, subwoofer cables to your Velodyne. You do not need fancy subwoofer cables. Some thick lamp cord (red / black) cables would do just fine.. Have fun.

[#87] Using subwoofer in a 2-channel system thanks kenny, so say my speaker cable is spade connector, then i use banana plug cable connect the amp with the subwoofer right?? also, for this method, does it mean the power of the subwoofer shut down automatically itself and the power amp will provide power for the sub...and do the crossover of the sub will disable also??

[#88] Using subwoofer in a 2-channel system Strange, I find direct connection from CD Player to subwoofer is better than High Level Input.( not from pre amp to sub. Of cause the CD Player need to have two set ofs output ). The over sound stage is cleaner. Nevertheless, I have to adj the volume of the sub if the main volume change a lot, say for diff CD.

[#89] Using subwoofer in a 2-channel system Degnuf; your subwoofer needs to be power up all the time. Because of impedance of the subwoofer is very high compared with the main speaker, so the subwoofer takes out very small current/power from the amp. The high-level connection should be treated as a signal path only. Search1818; bass should be felt, but not heard, so it is extremely difficult to adjust volume each time. Please advise your frequency settings + volume level for your subwoofer, and your amp model #, and your speaker.

[#90] Neutrik Speakon NL4FC connector Captione item is around $3x or $4X at 雅歌 (Ap Liu st.) when I bought it. But the shop which also selling professional audio equipment only charged $27!! OTOH, 秋葉原 is elling the same item at a much higher price. I don't think 雅歌 and the opposite shop sells fake or 'A' goods, just the others charge more. That was 1-2 year ago price. Anyway, high level input of REL is a big big advantage for sub bass in a 2.1 music system.

[#91] Neutrik Speakon NL4FC connector Kenny I'm using all tube pre amp and mono block. All from Audio Space - Line 2 and MB-1K I set frequency to min ( 60hz ) and volume ( suppose 6o'clock is zero, max is 5 o'clock) its at 8 o'clock. For high-level input.

[#93] Neutrik Speakon NL4FC connector Search1818; You can try my following suggestions to help you set your subwoofer with your system. I do not have a Proac manual, so I use REL as a guideline thinking that they are similar as they are both from UK so they should follow the same design principle * Disable all low-level inputs. Turn down any low-level volume on the subwoofer * Disconnect the CD output to subwoofer. 1st not many CD's have buffered outputs that they have the power to drive 2 sets of outputs @ same rating. Many times, if they drive 2 outputs, each output gets 1/2 of power * Turn your subwoofer frequency cutoff to minimum. For Proac, it may be 20 or 30 Hz... * For high-level volume, turn it to 12 o'clock, or even 1 o'clock. Your power amp has only 15-20W output, plus, it is a tube amp, so it may not have sufficient power to drive a subwoofer. Use shortest speakon cable if possible * Find a music CD that you are familiar with that has a lot of bass notes * Place your subwoofer nearby a wall, or a corner of your room, or, best, between 2 main speakers * Start your CD, frequency cutoff at the lowest, volume @ 12 o'clock position * Once you are familiar, then turn up your frequency by 1-step, or 5 Hz or similar. Volume remains unchanged * Then, turn up your frequency, 1 step at a time, then listen * Since your Proac has a 4" woofer, so at 40 Hz, 45 Hz, or 50 Hz, or 55 Hz, or 60 Hz, or 65 Hz etc etc, you would begin to hear overlap - that is - your subwoofer produces the same bass tone as your main speakers * Once you feel the overlap is too much, that the sound becomes muddy, then stop. You are now in the area where both subwoofer and main speakers integrate with each other * Here you can start to play around your volume * If you feel the bass is too strong, then, turn down your volume, again, step-by-step * Anytime your turn down your volume, you may need to turn up your frequency, 1 step more, so that you can keep the same overlap * Then, place your subwoofer, fix your cable length * It may take a few weeks, or a few months, to fine turn your frequency and volume to come to the best position. Your subwoofer needs to be charged up, and your amp and main speaker they need to learn to work with the subwoofer. * Then you can shorten your subwoofer cable to the shortest distance possible, or, buy a brand-name speakon cable, add spikes if you want to... Anyway... turn-up your subwoofer volume to fine-tune your subwoofer otherwise you cannot tell anything. Have fun. Let me know once it works ^_^.

[#94] Neutrik Speakon NL4FC connector By the way, I only use a 草蜢 Grasshopper CD to fine tune my subwoofer. It works well. No need to buy a test tone CD.

[#95] Neutrik Speakon NL4FC connector Kenny, Not everyone has a setup like yours with endowed talent of hearing 17kHz so much so that using Grasshoper CD can replace test tone CD. This puts many hifi CD house out of business ^_^

[#96] Neutrik Speakon NL4FC connector Kaycee; I have my shares of test tone CD's... If you play @ 20 Hz or 30 Hz continuously, it would burn out your subwoofer and may be your amp too and your main speakers. Plus, most test tones at any certain frequency last only 5 seconds per interval for many many test CD, so you never have sufficient time to listen. And test tones are so boring. If you read Stereophile reviews, the reviewers use music CD's to set up their subwoofers. When you think about it deeper, it makes good sense, as music is about a variety of frequency tones. Most important is you have something you are similar with, then you can tell what is right and what is not. By the way: Grasshopper sounds are really good - nice tuneful fast pace percussion bass - much better than many other Cantonese pops of the same era. Otherwise, I recommend Michael Jackson ^_^. You know, if you like this music, this is the test CD for you, as you know it inside out, and you try to make the system produce the best sound from it. Right ?

[#97] Neutrik Speakon NL4FC connector Hello Kenny, I bought the Starta 5 yesterday. I set up the original cable and the screen is on. I spent 1 hr, but couldn't set it up correctly. kind of frustrated. Kenny, did you have similar experience when you first setup up your strata 3 ?

[#98] Neutrik Speakon NL4FC connector H2005; did you consult the REL sales on your setup. You may also have a low power tube amp driving a high sensitivity main speakers, so your subwoofer must have sufficient gain to match the sound level of your main speakers. My guess is you must turn up your subwoofer volume to the maximum if it is required, then follow my suggestions to Search1818 on setting up the frequency level & shortening the cable length. If indeed it does not have sufficient gain, then use line-level inputs (from CD or AMP RCA output) to provide signal to the subwoofer.

[#99] Neutrik Speakon NL4FC connector I have the following setup The default is Hi 30 (Volume) Fr 30 (Frequency) Sd 0 (Slam/Depth) Ph 0 (Phase) I feel not much happening, so I change it to Hi 58 Fr 18 Sd 0 Ph 0 Then my windows and wall started to shake a little bit. I am still not sure how I should tune it or how to figure out what is right... Someone told me the optimal setting is Hi 55 Fr 33 but I thought the lower the frequency, the most LOWs I can get from it since my main speakers can't go that low. Anyone using strata 5 here ? Please point me to the right direction.

[#100] Neutrik Speakon NL4FC connector Hi Kenny Its very nice of you on the very detailed instruction. I have tried but at 12o'clock there are far too much bass. I tried your method and finally just go back to where I was before : High Level gain just at 8 o'clock. Frequency just at around 65 HZ ( min is 60 HZ for my woofer ). Some more findings :- 1. My woofer have Phase 1 and Phase 2. At phase 1 the bass will be even less than when turning the woofer off( volume at 8 o'clock ). So I simply forget Phase 1. 2. At Phase 2 , this is where real bass present. 3. My Power Amp have 8 ohm and 4 ohm output. As my main speakers are 8 ohm, so I connect the woofer to 8 ohm at first. However, it keep vibrating by itstelf even when no music played. The movement increased when I turn up the volume of the gain. Its quite scaring. I have connect the Black cable to GROUND of pre amp already. However, no such happen when connect the woofer to 4 ohm output of the power amp. So I have to use this set up. Main speakers use 8 ohm, woofer use 4 ohm. The results :- The bass go a bit deeper compared with no woofer, which is sufficient as too much bass will make the music unnatural. The additional bass is now just enough to make the music more REALISTIC. One cannot tell the presence of the woofer if not told. The most important contribution of the subwoofer for me is on the sound stage and highs and mids. The sound stage is now more transparent. The high and mid are brighter, just like turing a light on.

That's what happened to me with my REL strata 5, I asked my gf about the bass. She was like "huh ? where ? turned on already ?" sigh.... |
