| [#84] EL34/6550/KT88/KT90/KT90/KT150 tubes One Ching ask about change of tubes for Jadis JA30 Power Amp have the problem of adjusting bias, I enclosed one sketch indicate that one 1k 20W variable resistor should be installed between the cathode and earth/neutral to replace the existing fixed resistors, as a result, the EL34 can be changed to KT150, the variable 1k 20W resistor can adjust the bias and at the same time adjust the balance between the positive cycle and negative cycle of the sound signal.  |

| [#86] EL34/6550/KT88/KT90/KT120/KT150 tubes As I stated before that all existing EL34/6550/KT88/KT90/KT120 tubes can be replaced and upgraded by Tung-Sol KT150, but subject to: 1. The distance between tubes, since KT150 is larger size; 2. The power output of transformer should be more than 500W, the static power after replacement by KT150 should be set at 300W; 3. The bias has to be adjust to control current and balance between tubes. The main technic to control bias is two major types, the first type is supply positive or negative DCV to the grid, all EL34 family need negative DCV to the grid (-120V to -200V), the second type is to install a fix or variable resistor between the ground and the cathode of tubes, as a result, the voltage of Cathode is higher than the voltage at Grid. I personally prefer to install a 1K 20W variable resistor for each power tube in series with a 200mA DC current meter, as a result, I can visualize the bias current and at the same time check the balance between positive and negative phase of tubes, furthermore since the Cathode is higher than the ground, the noise from heater filament can be reduced, one more advantage is to protect the tube for maximum startup current during switching on, the maximum current is equal to supply voltage divided by this resistor. So far I have replaced 5 sets of Jadis (KT88 & KT90) and ARC power amp (KT120) to KT150, and found the improvement of sound quality is great changes. Dr. Chan 最後修改時間: 2015-03-27 09:25:18 |
