| [#107] Thiel 同好會 Oh! The Thiel fans finally back...... I'm using CS1.6 right now, and own CS1.5 before. I used to drive my CS1.5 and CS1.6 with ARC LS15 + VT50, sound dynamic, vivid, good in definition in my previous 200ft. listening area. My speaker have packed for nearly TWO years after moving. The listening area have downsized to 150ft., but the overall area is still 230ft. I recently shift from Tube gear to SS again. Currently, I using Pass Aleph P with Threshold T200 to drive my CS1.6, it doesn't sound edgy or harsh while it have better controlling, definition and imaging over my previous ARC tube combo!! Although CS1.6 is said to be higher in efficiency, however, to my experience in the past few years using Tube with Thiel, SS Class A amp with neutral sounding, and high current design is a better match......... |

| [#109] Thiel 同好會 Thiel 2.3 is an excellent value speaker, much under-rated. As fomhk said (I know, I bought his pair) the 2.3 is NOT difficult to drive. fomhk drove it with his 30 wpc ARC SP10/Marantz 8 to excellent effect. I have driven it with Bryston 4B (NOT the current SST), ARC Classic 30, CL60, Ensemble Corifeo, all to excellent effect. Much under-rated. |

If they elevate their price tag more with higher expense in marketing, they may able to double their sales....... Thiel are easily to sound well, however, in order to make it sound excellent, the value of the associated gears may triple or quadruple the value of Thiel..... Besides, it really need spacious listening area and distance to the speaker to achieve the "reasonable" height of the soundstage, that often an issue faced by Hong Kong Thiel lover. |

I love the mid to high performace of PCS, however, it is too small to produce adequate bass in my place. Would you mind sharing what gears you are using and the size of your listening area. |

| [#115] Thiel 同好會 Hi ken, If you brought your PCS more than 4 years ago, the tweeter and midrange should be the one using by 2.3 rather than 2.4, I think the recent production have change to use the new tweeter that used in 2.3i and 2.4 with smooth sounding and coherence. If space is not an issue, especially can place speaker at least ONE meter from the front wall, Thiel floor standing is still my favour. It's quite hard to change back to bookshelf speaker once tasted the full body of floor standing....... |

| [#116] Thiel 同好會 Give you some advice on Thiel CS5 This is an awesome speaker. I had this pair for 7 years. During this time, I have numerous speakers coming in and out of my house. None of the speaker come close to the Thiel. Because of the following reason: If you expect to have good sound with a small room forget it. If you think you use normal Hi Fi gear to match with CS5 forget it. CS5 can sound bright and brittle on the top end if you have a small room, low end gear and midrange sounds mechanical. If you hear this sound you would rather to have a pair of proac response, which is always sound very good no matter what electronics you use. Thiel is a different story, Thiel make speaker is not to please the listener, I talked to Jim Thiel from time to time over email. Once you understand his philosophy, you will know his speaker desgin criteria is meant to be for coherent and accurate as his primary mission. Lots of people give up on CS5 because not many people knows how to setup this baby. Once CS5 is setup the way the designer recommended, you will be truly hear a high end sound. I used to have ATC, Proac, Martin logan, Avalon etc... one speaker that comes close to CS5 performance is the 5 foot Cello. The top and high end is elecrostatic like but without shortcoming of electrostatic speaker which is unstable with your line voltage at home. CS 5 does not give you lots of space unless you are at least 10 foot away from the speaker, the bass is noticably taut tight, rhythmic and not bury, CS5 only give you the bass that is in the cd or vinyl but not gives you any exaggeration on any part of the spectrum. I got a full Cello system to push the CS5, I used to use Krell, but Cello is way better amp, you can hear the coherence of top and low octave. People mentioned to me CS5 cannot play loud. YOu know why? I measured the CS5 at 105 db at home, it was loud, but you won't know, because the sound is so perfect, you won;e feel that it is loud, it is just right. If you want to turn up the volume further, you amp needs to be able to handle 0.5 Ohm impedance..... Please let me know if u guys wants to know more |

To my experience of CS1.5 and CS1.6, all I say, no matter which Thiel speaker you own, the pricing and size of speaker cannot reflect the true potential of the speaker! Never judge your Thiel until you feed them well and place them well! Each Thiel model are design for a specific "Size" of listening area.....the price only reflect the cost and effort of building the speaker! The new model such as CS1.6 and CS2.4 are a little bit amp-friendly then their previous generation, but still need superb electronics to make them really SING...... |

| [#119] Thiel 同好會 Other aspects of the speaker that I would like to share is the speed. I believed why Thiel not to go for bigger size woofer for a reason, if you listen to B&W 801 no matter is the latest one or the earlier matrix. You will notice the bass come a milli seconds later than the treble, so Jim Thiel would try to compensate this by having smaller woofer, say instead of one man pusing the trolley, you need 3 man pushing different parts of the trolley, one man may be taller, one man may be shorter, the best is to utilize the 3 man the best potenital to do the job, rather than one superman, and you guys know there is no superman in the world, the same applies to Speaker design. I must admit other speakers did give me that earth shaking bass, but that is not what I want. I played different instrument in real life. My criteria when listening to Hi Fi is the electronics capable of producing the speed, liveness, the cymal crsips, and the mid bass. If you listen to piano by Joe sample disk (* One of my fabourite jazz pianst on the planer" ) YOu will hear very clear very single note that he played in the keyboard without the sustain pedal. Each note disspear naturally without overinginng. I thought the Apogee gives me pretty good speed with this track, not until I hear the Thiel, then I realized how accurate is the speaker. It is very easy for us to critizie a design for someone who spent years in designing the cross over, it only take you and me 5 mins to critize the performance, how sad and unfair.... There are many better speaker out there which I have not heard, such as the Rockport, which is way over my budget or WEGG or Goldmund... Those are way over my budget and for the $ that I can afford, I highly recommed Thiel, not because I am the owner but I looked at cost /performance ratio. I want to know about Cs3.6 Something that I scratch my head for quiet sometime. Mr. Yeung reckoend the passive bass is no good.... Any idea guys... |

| [#120] Thiel 同好會 Hi samnetwlinn, If you like Jazz piano, you should try Bill Evans, he is marvelous! His album recording is always good to excellent. "Spring Yeung" critics about CS3.6 design is just a joke! Not worth to waste the time on this so called issue. Speed, accuracy and colorless presentation to music are the strong point of Thiel, but it is also the shortfalls that keep people away from it......the speaker effortlesly reveal not only the spirit behind the music and accompany the shortfalls of one's system as well...... |
