| [#103] What are you listening to? ( classical mus CKM Pls let me say Thank You - firstly, for generously sharing with us your vast knowledge, secondly for writing two long paragraphs, and thirdly for describing each piainst's style so vividly. I can only marvel at your listening experience, observation, and your siccint style of writing too! Kempff - poteic - yes, especially in the late sonatas, but that said, he may be too well-mannered to bring out the composer's struggle in his late compositions. Pollini - escalating intensity - can't agree more, but wouldn't it be more suitable to describe the great Michaelangeli, when his Barbican live recording of the op.111 did in fact escalate me? Cold may not be the impression Pollini wanted to give, but unfortunately, this is what his recordings portrait in most cases. Gilels - powerful tone - and may I also add that the tone is also tied together by his tight and disciplined phrasing too. If Gilel speeds up in "Les Adieux", do try Pletnev's. Gulda - urgent, exciting - absolutely, and we are not only talking about fast tempo. It is the tension created by the urgency of his playing that holds the music together and created the excitment. Arrau - thoughtful and heavy, late Klemperer's Beethoven - and I would guess, Klemperer's Pastoral? Kovacevich - this is perhaps where we diverge, his fingers are very quick, but those are scales he plays. That was when he was still called "Bishop", so maybe he has moved on. If Zimerman is ever going to record Beethoven sonatas, his will be the ultimate collection with a combination of all of the above. His Op.109 concert over a decade ago was just too special not to make me look forward to him recording the new testament. |

| [#118] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Yesterday was Sunday, I decided to use this percious rest day in a week reinvestigate the music of Shostakovich. Thank to the recommendation of Doctor John! I start with probably the most famous symphony of Shostakovich: Symphony No.7 ( Leningrad ) . This symphony was written during the second world war, Shostakovich was on his way to a football match when Russia ( Soviet Union ) declare war against Germany ( Nazi ), Shostakovich immediately head for army recruitment office but he was found to be physically not strong enough te be an army, instead he became a fire-fighter in Leningrad. The four movement was infused with his love for his country, the four movement was subtitle: 1. War, 2.Memories, 3. My native Field, 4. Victory. It is not difficult to imagine how Shostakovih feel when bombing plane were launch their attack right above, and he told his feeling vividly in this dissonant and soul shaking music. Great music like this are definitely not for causal listening, which unfortunately I did in the past, I should pay more respect and effort to understand more about Shostakovich's music. Barshai was close friends of Shostakovich and founder member of Borodin string Quartet, his conducting was very convinicing to me ( although I do not have any other version ). Engineering was demontrative grade. ![]() |
