3. That’s it!!!!

[#22] 唔洗錢就測試反射聲在你房間的影響! iloveu hing, If you have listened to a system with vivid soundstage and solid image, you won't forget that sensation. Room treatment is probably the most effective upgrade you can do to any system. When done well, you can really feel you are listening to music in a concert hall. ^^

I suppose it is high chance that you are actually testing on effect of less high frequency.... ****** In general, yes. That's one of my purposes too. But the scenario is a bit more complex. If I do all the things, I will be hearing: 1. Direct Sound from the speaker (the most significant) 2. Reflected sound from the wall behind the speaker (also significant) 3. Unabsorbed sound, reflected from the artificial 'horn' I made. The significance of this depends on the materials. Palms/hands seem to be very reflective. (variable; thick materials - absorb mids and highs much more) 4. Sound penetrating through the materials. If very thick jacket is used, I think it blocks most of the sound. (variable) So I think I at least hear the 'direct' mids and highs and 'reflected ' mids and highs from the wall behind the speakers. Yes, the mids and highs are reduced. But if thick materials are used MOSTLY it should be the overall effect of reducing the REFLECTED mids and highs coming from the side wall and the wall behind our listening position. They're always said to be needed to be treated anyway. I admit for very spacious room, the wall behind the listening position should be a diffusor rather than absorber. But as room diminishes, it's generally recommended that a mix of absorption and diffusion is better. And in many cases of HK rooms, where the listening position is almost close to the wall, absorption seems to be a more reasonable choice. So I think while the experiment in general test the influence of reflected sound from three sides, it is actually more applicable to people like me, who has to sit almost right against the wall. And after all, it's just a half-test ... have fun ... tltsun hing: Could you explain more?

For me, the effect is obvious - with 羽絨或厚褸 fully covering my ears (from the back) the image is definitely clearer, and sound is also 'darker' .................................................................. Absorption is always uneven to different frequency... I suppose it is high chance that you are actually testing on effect of less high frequency....

[#13] 唔洗錢就測試反射聲在你房間的影響! hi z hing, yes long time no see, hope things are fine for you so far and have a nice year in 2010. It was interseting to read your posts as i do "cup my hands around my ears" in my hifi room to get a more holographic sound. Image is so much sharper and solid hearing sound that way, and before I read yoru post today I have been thinking if that was due to that I was hearing more direct waves free from wall reflection. So your post have certainly reinforced some of my speculation. Now this gives me even more incentive to improve the acoustic treatment of my room. i can't wait to hear what i have heard with the cupping of hands without doing the act BTW, I found this, may be useful to brothers here: http://www.enjoythemusic.com/diy/1109/room_treatments.htm

[#12] 唔洗錢就測試反射聲在你房間的影響! welborne long time no see. I thought about this. Yes, there may be some waves / frequencies behaving in the way you described. You're perfectly correct. But I still share with our bros here for the following reasons: 1. In working 羽絨或厚褸 in the way I described, there're t least two possible effects. 2. First, absorbing certain level and frequencies of mids and highs. Second, acting like small horns, gathering and amplifying certain frequencies. I think both effects exist. The question is relative significance. 3. When I use hands instead of 羽絨或厚褸, I feel the horn effect is much greater since I found the mids and highs are stronger. This is the case even though some reflected sounds (from back or side, depending on your palm shapes) are actually blocked by the hands. SO I think in this 'palm/hand' case, the 'horn' effect is very prominent. 4. When I use 羽絨或厚褸 - the reverse happens. The 羽絨或厚褸 become 'two horns' objectively anyway if we do (5) - they must collect and amplify certain frequencies like the hands do. The thing is, it doesn't sound like using hands. So I guess, well, the 羽絨或厚褸 is very likely to be a significant sound absorber (besides serving as a 'blocker' of reflected sound). 5. Of course, I really don't know the exact frequency range and level of absorption. So why doing this? I just like to share with some of my friends here - sometimes we read articles about importance of reflected sound but it's hard to demonstrate their signficance QUICKLY in OUR OWN ENVIORNMENT, WITHOUT COST (many articles want you to buy their products ...). Sometimes I look at the ceiling, thinking, 'oh well, what if ...'. I have used the hand-approach but it doesn't work well. Cushions are hard to bent, heavy, and inconvenient. Oh, 羽絨或厚褸 is so convenient - I could do it on my own ... 6. SO with different 'thickness' of 羽絨或厚褸 - we can experiment the possiblility of different sounds created in the VERY SAME ROOM too! I tried a sport jacket today - it has very little influence. So it also shows that hanging up light curtains is very likely to be useless - they're like the sport jacket. Hope the 羽絨或厚褸 could shed some lights on the possibility of differnet sounds to some of my friends here is my humble wish. For me, the effect is obvious - with 羽絨或厚褸 fully covering my ears (from the back) the image is definitely clearer, and sound is also 'darker'; the soundstage also seems to be narrowed a bit as well (so I may suffer / enjoy some wide imaging because of the reflected sounds; whether it's smearing of image or creating livier sound is to some degree subjective). I guess it shows us some hints of what could be achieved and how. Whether I like it - I still need time to find out.

[#11] 唔洗錢就測試反射聲在你房間的影響! would these exercises also have the effect of "magnifying" the signal getting into the ears by creating and "horn" around the ears, and do so by only magnifying certain frequencies but not the full spectrum just like most horns do, so in effect what you hear with either the jacket hood/cupping of hands is not so much related to isolating room wall reflection? Just an alternative thought, I may be totally wrong.
