[#2] Question on Quad 405
Quad 405Power-Amp

No offence, happyquad, I was wondering if you've done any research or have ever read any of the Quad power amp (405/606 etc)owner's manuals.

If you did, you should find "..... The Quad is normally used with the Quad control unit.........", and "... The switch on the amplifier (405-2) may be left permanently in the ON position, and both amplifier and pre-amplifier then switch on and of at the pre-amplifier......."

Quad power amp is never intended to be 長插電源

(for the benefit of Review 33 members, please go read the top right hand corner of the attached 405-2 owner's manual)

[#7] Question on Quad 405

[#9] Question on Quad 405
It's a bit silly to say that QUAD 405 could not be "on" all the time if it connects with the preamplifier 34 for power supply according to the booklet. Provided that BBC, RTHK and radio stations use this trustworthy and durable amp (405-2, 520) for studio monitor amplification, what's the point if those DJ press "on" and "off" frequently day-in-day-out? Remember the operation of radio station is 24 hours a day! not 12 hours!

I have not plugged the inlet power cord from 34 to 405-2 for power supply(though very convenient by just pressing a button) since 1994, the sound is poor enough and the frequent power surge can indeed make the EI transformer at 405-2 aging.

Trying to switch on/off at least four times a day, your amp definitely needs emergency help!

My electrical technician friend who owns 405-2 & 606MKII, suggests that QUAD power amps (405-2, 606, 909) can be open unless and untill you give them a break at least 24 hours for weekly operation. Surely you should turn off the power amp if you dun use it for a longer period.

I can't agree no more with Happyquad c-hing!

[#10] Question on Quad 405

The point is with proper maintenance: calibration and parts replacement, rather than with power switching. During my radio days in the late 80s in Britain, QUAD amps in studios were there to be switched on 24/7 until scheduled maintenance, this is the way to use QUAD amps in the professional field. But then it does not imply that they would be worn out fast by repeated power switching, witness their longevity in OB lorries, in which everything was tortured to the limit, including the people in there, lacking air con. When lorries failed the MOT, gears including the QUAD amps would be taken down and reinstalled into new lorries. QUAD amps, domestic and professional, were built to last, in the same standard, and we joked that they would be the only survivors had the OB lorry rolled down the hill.

Today I leave my 66 and 606MK2 on 24/7, that keeps the aging capacitors steady at working condition ... I know, head burying in sand, and they will need professional repair soon, just that I am putting things off. This is another great British institution, on British electronics: even though they may not work perfectly when new, they won't deteriorate much upon aging ...

Ha Ha...

Thanks notmychartwell! You are genuine BBC guy!

NAR did recommend to leave it one-day rest for prolonged use. My ex-boss in HMV central also opened it for steady performance.

Enjoy the concert tomorrow!

[#12] Question on Quad 405
BTW, I have stayed at University of Surrey for three months (2000) there for the purpose of accompanying my girlfriend who read master degree. I still remember professor John Borwick, once served in BBC as audio consultant, who taught acoustic engineering degree course there and he always carried with QUAD 606MKII for lecture tour and we had a short chat before

He always praised its reliability and trustworthiness with gorgeous sound, "this monster powerhouse never complain and never have a mishap during my lecture around UK, I have tried other amps but this one seems to be my lifetime reference"

-----------------------------

When I worked at HMV Central as part-time saleman in classical / jazz section 10 years ago, Section Manager always told me "never switch off pairs of 306 after business hours coz the sound are no good aftermath." Driving Harbeth PL-5 is effortless with neutrality.

[#13] Question on Quad 405

Hello George

I was trained as part time helpers but didn't quite have worked officially for the BBC. I wrote for them anyway, real eye opening experiences :) Wife and I will attend on Sat ... too bad Mørk chickened out !

I see! That's a real eye-opening experience even you were just a part-time helper! so envious :)

My last visit of RTHK in 1995 still haunts my head, saw many domestic (KEF, HARBETH, QUAD, Nagra) /professional (NEUMANN, GOTHAM cable,ATC,Studer, Neve) gears at several studio, Eye-wide-shut enough!

Miss those heyday with BBC smell, dun know what's the fate of those gear and culture after a decade!

[#15] Question on Quad 405

Fascinating stories, bringing a QUAD tank along with lecture tours :-D

Yes QUAD amps are very versatile, it's a bit sad to see a lack of proper respect from a wider audience just because they lack the bells and whistles of comparable products. The community radios I worked for were also run by former BBC people, they kind of followed the tradition, and QUADs were also widely used while exploring other possibilities.

[#16] Question on Quad 405

Old days, good ol' days ... recently I read complaints from within the BBC, that for "trendy" reasons they started to use glass walls for studios; look good for interviews and taking photos, but the sonic reflections are all over the place, then the engineers got all the blame !

Fascinating stories, bringing a QUAD tank along with lecture tours :-D

-------------------------------

I'm not kidding indeed, Professor John Borwick always drove around UK to conduct lecture tour with his QUAD606MKII tank, QUAD Electrostatic speaker ESL63PRO becomes his monitor tools when he works as a freelance recording engineer for NIMBUS and Hyperion.

He is also an audio editor for Gramophone magazine and once served BBC as studio manager, also has been a AES chairman written a handful of books about acoustic engineering and professional recording.

Still remember his charming and talkative lecture (his first lecture tutorial of Tonimeister degree at University of Surrey was "Straight Wire With Gain?" ), a decent old gentleman who always simulated the enthusiasm among student toward audio recording and acoustic knowledge, though law was my major subject.

I respect his skillset and indepth knowledge about classical music, surely including his BBC conventional practice.

[#18] Quad
On a slightly different subject to Quad 405

I own a set of Quad ESL63Pro plus the gradient sub-woofer instead of a speaker stand. The speakers were driver by 2 x Quad 606 MkII. You have to be careful with the Quad 606 because if you do not have it switched on more than once a week, there is a resistor inside that can burnt itself out easily upon initial power on. I replaced this resistor at least 3 times. I ws temped to use higher wattage resistor which can withstand the higher wattage but end up
against the idea in fear of other damages is done to the amp.

I found a cure ever since by using a variac (a variable voltage transformer), whenever I switch on equipment which had not been used for over one week, I connect this transformer in between the power amp or other equipment and then dial the voltage starting below 100 V and slowly increase to 220 (with the power switch 'On'), after the voltage is stablised and the equipment had warmed up for say a few minutes, then I power off , remove the transformer and re-connect the equipment to the power point again.

This procedures will help to avoid sudden power surge during equipment get turn on which can easily destroy capacitors and also shorten the life of those component.

Since I used this method to re-condition the power status of my lack of use equipment, I no longer have the same problem with that burn out resistor.

It is a worthwhile consideration if you love your audio equipment and try to reduce the possible of a breakdown.

****************************************
Lastly, I did not like the gradient woofers, so I replaced them all with Cerwin Vagas woofers, I got some real punchy sound out of those woofers but I am not sure whether I like them playing classical music while I love the sound when pop music was played, but then the Quad ESL63Pro is not design for pop music.

In the subject of 63Pro,speakers, watch out for the honey cone look alike inside panel, the glue often come off and the loose inner panel is a matter of serious concern to good sound.

regards,

Raymond

[#19] Question on Quad 405

Thanks for sharing on reconditioning idled QUAD amps. I am aware of using a variac to recondition a tube poweramp not being in use. It is also very dangerous to switch on a frozen tube poweramp from cold, with full voltage loading.

There is also a thread somewhere in r33 urging owners of QUAD 606MK2 and later models to place the poweramps upside down so to keep the power transformers inside in the "normal" orientation. I can understand their concern, but I am sure they will be jumping up and down if they know I am placing my 606MK2 in a vertical orientation (!) Well, yes, unorthodox, but I've seen more chaotic orientations of QUAD amps which I am not going into explicit details.

A variac, made in China. Looks like navy surplus from a PLA submarine ...
