Sony v-fet preamp

Here embodied are the 70s in all their solid glory - the TA-E7B was packed with more functions and inputs than one could think of.

Not that they were all necessary but, in true 70s style, the more knobs the better ! Needless to say, it still looks better than the 80s' the more LEDs the better.
Anyway - a business inversely proportional to the TA-N7 sobriety !

Of course, by today's standards, the TA-E7B sports way too much knobs and switches to deserve any kind of 'audiophile' label but, still, when all tone controls and filters are off, there's only one coupling capacitor in the signal path - and if that ain't audiophile bickering...

Not to mention the phono MC input, the gold-plated phono terminals or the very elaborate phono stage... and VU meters with peak, average and sampling/hold modes !

An excellent preamplifier with a nice but hidden servicing touch : the E7B opens up three-fold, back, center and front so that everything remains easily accessible.
The center shield you can see below next to the caps hides the meter board with one single

My V-fet amp

成長於 “石” 器時代的旺記，memories 都是石的東西，跳進膽的世界反而衹有十年的歷史，但是這種歷程也很有趣，因為八零年代睇MJ，期期都有許多 SS 的製作，若有一期特別多膽的 article，就罷買可也，依家剛剛掉轉 …

因為有了膽的知識，才知道原來石家庒兵器譜之首應是 V-FET 無疑。

這話怎說？要由 FET 講起。

本來無一物， FET就是一件 N channel或 P channel，加一個閘。此為之JFET。 J stand for junction。

好了，為了加大 channel 的功率能耐，半導體廠家丑盡六淫，增加通道內的 surface area。 Lateral FET 加強擊穿電壓， Vertical FET 則強化了電流流通量。

Hitachi 第一代 power FET 2SK134/J49 就是 lateral FET。

後來老美的 Siliconix 推出了 vertical FET。

且慢，以上的 power FET，統統是 MOSFET。即是，閘與通道之間用一層 oxide 防擊穿。呢層 oxide 等用一隻電容。今天電腦裡面的 CPU 、memory和 logic IC 全部都是 MOS structure。慳電也。

但，在 audiophile world ，signal path 裡加 cap，有冇攪錯。

如此這般，有個日本大學教授( 九成九喺發燒友)想到一個 structure，沒有 MOS layer 的 power JFET。

就喺 V-FET。

當時 SONY 相當 aggressive ，立刻買咗呢個 design。出咗 2SK60/2sJ18 和 2nd generation 的 2SK82/J28 等等。 Yamaha 可能也 license 了個 IP，出了 2SK70/2SJ20。 Yamaha 的 B1 和 B2就係用自家的V-FET。

當年呢D V-FET 貴過 2SK134/J49，而 power rating 差許多。

旺記當年年幼唔識貨，覺得 V-FET 唔值，所以冇玩過，只識玩 2SK134。

玩過 lateral mosfet嘅人就知，D 聲濛濛，衰過 BJT，有人仲話呢D就係膽聲，嘿 !!

V-FET 喺唯一有力挑戰膽的石，除了因為冇咗層衰聲 MOS 之外，個 structure 基本上就喺低壓嘅 DHT。

and I say, DHT 。

Triode !!

characteristic curve 上嚟講， V-FET 類似 triode，而 mosfet 類似 pentode。

SONY 一早冇出 V-FET唉，但2000年左右，日本發燒友番兜 V-FET，原因喺佢地突然晃然大悟在工業上用的另一種元件 SIT 原來就是V-FET。結果炒到飛起，因為做 SIT 的廠都執埋，剩番 D 貨尾。

蝴蝶效應，Nelson Pass 在 2005 年揾到 power JFET，發覺效果勁好( 冇法，佢前半生只有 BJT 同 MOSFET 為伴，大概未知 triode 有幾美味)，於是在 diy 圈吹起了一陣風。但 power JFET market 太少，已經 obsolete 埋。

旺記發 V-FET 夢發咗七、八年唉(自從中咗 DHT 毒之後)。

And recently，終於善價揾咗部 V-FET amp 番嚟。

----D聲絕對不硬！diy的話，用電阻多些，但電容不多的。

I bought about 30 Sony 2SJ18/2SK60 pairs last year. Waiting to play with them sometime...:-)
