it really does not matter. it is a reference or a standard that u choose.

i sometimes bring along a celine dion cd to test equipment. it is not an audiophile recording but just an ordinary cd. if the equipment is good it will give me good music. if the equipment is too analytical it will show up the weakness in recording consist of piercing highs.

i want my equipment to play regular cds with good acceptable sound quality and audiophile recordings even better.

u will notice some high priced high end equipment can only play a small number of recordings good while ordinary recordings unlistenable.

i believe in striking a balance so i get more listenable recorded music.

即所謂試音碟參考碟, 是自己耳仔聆聽標準, 自己知道隻碟可以比到D乜野音樂, 音場, 音質....比自己. 隻碟可以check到套system合唔合自己口味, 未必一定係天碟乜乜錄音水準

我有一次帶左一隻雜錦流行曲, 嘩, 果套system句然可以將呢隻"撚掉"碟播到天牒一樣清晰無比, 層次分明...... 呢 D system 真係賣底褲都要買 !

I found the above description interesting, and is quite common for some hifi lovers.

The thing is, I don't know the technical aspects beside it.

When one feels that a system is 'TOO' analytical, what does it mean technically? Does it mean its parameters are close to genuine hi-fidelity so it would expose the weaknesses of CDs which are not well-recorded? How to 'operationalise' these parameters? We all knows that now different components have several sets of 'standard' measurements in the industries - are we talking about these parameters?

And when one feels that a system can play most CDs well, what does it mean technically? Does it mean it has 'nice distortions', less technically perfect? So much so that it can 'mask' the problems of ordinary CDs? How distorted should these distortions be? And how to 'operationalise' these parameters?

I don't have answers to these questions, but as cpu8088 always use rational approach, I would like to know if you could tell me the technical side of the answers to the above questions. This is not challenges with bad intentions. I really wanna know some technical answers. Thanks in advance!

i just accept that i want enjoyable reproduced music. even today i still stick with vinyl playing lots of old pops and classical recordings.

most expensive gears are cater for the last bits of highs and lows. say for example to get the last bit of 20-40hz u need to have refrigerator sized speakers or big subwoofers plus a good room. similarly if you want extended highs you may have to go with diamonds, beryllium or some exotic materials.

regarding analytical some electronics can get you this but then one may find the sound a bit dry without emotions. some like it there is nothing wrong with it. to me it just have more chance showing up the deficiencies in the recording and mixing process.

on the video side similar reasoning to me. i can go with lcd monitor but then i find the images too sharp to my eyes so if i watch 2 movies in a row i will get fatigue. should i go with blu ray? not necessary. i can stick with my 720p projector and watch dvd movies thru a good scaler and enjoy some good old movies. do you think a remastered blu ray ben hur will be better to watch than an ordinary dvd? with a movie you like you can be drawn by the story, acting and emotion flow.

similarly with music if the song is no good the singing is no good irrespectively it is hifi quality recording and mixing done properly do you think you will continue listening for 50 times except for equipment testing?

this hobby is about compromising. most times changing gear is just for differences not necessarily better.
