| [#93] 余師傅說他心中最好的LP 盤---Roksan Xerxes 和 Linn LP12..... niceday009 is one enthusiastic Hi-End Audiophile and not only buying those equipment but also analysing and understanding every aspect of the characteristics of them. This is the hard since experience and review could be quite subjective and may cause disapproval and criticism, and attack at worst. Nonetheless, niceday009 has always been spotted on with every piece of equipment he has used and owned. It is no surprise that he earns praises from other members here, deservedly so. This is very difficult and keeping the constant standard is even more harder. Thanks for all the sharing here and other areas. I just missed out on a less than prefect Xerxes Mark I which went for a peanut price. In the UK both Roksan and Linn have quite a following. I suppose they are both British product and easily source. More importantly I believe they maintain the British sound which suit the local people. Some memory.  |

With the combination of the popularity of internet for the last 15 years, dishonesty of many new reviewers and hifi dealers, I would agree to trust myself more than the others. However no disrespect to those people who established hi-end/ hifi industry since 60s included many well known reviewers. However, particularly in HK, unless you are rich people, otherwise it is normal that you would receive the hard shoulder /feeling from may sales even you are willing to spend thousands (well.. thousands only). For LP12, it may not be the best sounding turntable but undoubted it has established as the bench mark for good sound. If someone told me that Goldmund reference or studio is better, I would say certainly but how much better and I honestly do not know. I bet the LP12 which is professional set up by Mr. Yu could sound better than the poor to average set-up with Goldmund. People may argue that you can listen and see some very hi-end product in the show. I would say these new hi-end tables are all looking expensive and awesome but sounding good? Well ........................ Please note that the original debate started when someone recalled what Mr. Yu of Excel said regarding Linn and Roksan. Of course Mr. Yu has formed his own opinion but his opinion was in fact valuable and trustable, based on his personality and experience in the hi fi sector. But I think I have figured out something important for myself during my journey in hifi. That's why I have spent less time in r33 and reading hifi reviews. I will try to share some of these ideas here. A product that sells very well and a lot over many years only means it is a very good product or the best product for that market segment. It does not mean absolutely the best product in the world and in history. There are many things that differentiate market segment (not only price). For me, I would consider LP12 is a good product but I also think there is no point considering or deciding whether it is the best product. But the most important for me to understand is that after speaking to one of a well known painter that is still alive (Oxford and Cambridge University study her paintings as part of their Arts degree), I then realised (not exactly understand) that in this world, the assessment or judgment of Art which include painting, music and other form of Art is objective for the high caliber professional world. Only in the world of the average people and consumers that Art is subjective. This is very difficult to understand and I will try to explain. For example, for professionals, they can put down in writing and explain what a Mona Lisa painting is so good and worth so much money. Professionals that study this form of Art can precisely explain and distinguish between good and bad piece of painting, and it is not subjective. A group of professionals can get together and agree on all the points that distinguish a piece of painting. Its not like the average people looking at a painting and say I like it or not. For a painter himself, he can precisely tell at which level a painter he is. Its not based on how many paintings he sells or how much he can sell them for. For people in Hong Kong, if you have watched 超級巨聲, you should notice that there is a critical assessment on how a song can be sung and what is objectively a good and a bad performance. It is not just based on whether the singing sounds nice or not. What I am trying to say is that there is a way to objective assessment whether a hifi equipment is good or bad and better or worst. But I am also saying that this requires significant knowledge and study in this area (as in everything else) which I do not think I can acquire unless I turn hifi/music into my full time job. Therefore, I have given up and just rely on what most people do ie assess a hifi subjectively. If I am assessing it subjectively, then why do I need other people to tell me what I like. I just go and try and listen, and see what I like myself. I don't expect everyone understand or agree with me. But this is just something that I have figured out. |
