[#5398] Leak Stereo 50 Vs Stereo 60 Hi, My Stereo 60 has a round choke, this being one of the later amplifiers. The choke replaces the 100 Ohm resistor in the power supply, giving better smoothing and a lower "resistance" power supply. The Stereo 50 is nearer the Stereo 20, having slightly more of the Stereo 20 sound than the Stereo 60 but with the extra power of the EL34's, the Stereo 60 clips at 35 Watts and the Stereo 50 clips at 25 Watts. Generally the EL34 has a harder sound, but I like the sound of the EL34 (I put it down to working with and listening to all those guitar amplifiers). I'm now on the lookout for a Stereo 50. Terry. ----------------------------------------------- Reposted from the Leak eGroup : ) |

[#5399] Leak Stereo 50 Vs Stereo 60 The Stereo 60 power amplifier is my own dream-amplifier. The EL34 ultra-linear output stage can actually deliver about 35 Watts at clipping, with distortion reaching 0.1% at about 25 Watts. The amplifier is closely related to the Stereo 50 model, which at first glance looks quite similar. The external differences are: The Stereo 60 has an input attenuator switch (some later Stereo 50 units also have these) The first stage valve socket is mounted above the chassis instead of from below A power supply filter choke was included in the Stereo 60 in the middle of the chassis. In the photo above the round can in the middle is where the filter choke is located. It has been reported (but not confirmed) that some Stereo 60 units had a large choke (like that shown), but most were much smaller that this. Circuit-wise, the Stereo 60 is almost identical to the Stereo 50, except that the power supply voltage is higher - the power transformer outputs more voltage, and the filter choke results in less voltage drop in the filtering circuit. More impotantly though, the Stereo 60 uses type 8615 output transformers (with 25% screen taps) where as the Stereo 50 uses type 3925 output transformers (with 50% screen taps, making operation of the output tstage closer to triode, with less power). As a result the Stereo 60 delivers slightly more power than the Stereo 50. http://home.mira.net/~kiewavly/Stereo60.html |

[#5400] Leak Stereo 50 Vs Stereo 60 In the 1950's, 25 Watts was a lot of power in domestic hi-fi terms, so the Leak Stereo 50 did not sell in large numbers (although in the USA where the less efficient acoustic suspension tyes of speakers introduced by AR were becoming popular, power outputs above 20 Watts were desirable). The Stereo 50 was introduced by Leak in 1958, alongside the lower powered Stereo 20. The Stereo 50 used the following circuit toplogy: First Stage: A single 12AX7 shared between channels as a common cathode gain stage. Second Stage: A 12AX7 configured as a long-tailed pair for gain and phase splitting. The anode resistors were of unequal value to compensate for the residual un-balance in the phase splitter Output Stage: The Mullard EL34 (6CA7) were used in push-pull ultralinear with cathode bias from separate cathode resistors. (As each cathode resistor dissapates about 2.5Watts, each pair is positioned above the chassis in a single white tube adjacent to the output valves. The single tube contains two 440Ohm wire wound resistors.) Only 380 Volts was applied to the anodes, so the EL34's are not working very hard at all. Idle current is around 65mA. This enables the amplifier to give 25Watts output, but there is no reserve beyond this (unlike the Leak TL/25 Plus which had about 450V on the EL34's and would give 32 Watts output). The amplifier on this web page has had the RCA input connectors replaced for gold-plated ones, and the speaker connectors changed to 4mm banana sockets. Late in the production run (around 1961), Leak introduced a Hi/Lo sensitivity switch next to the input stage valve, and the input stage valve socket was mounted from above the chassis (like on the Stereo 60). Power Supply: A single 5AR4 rectifier in the center of the chassis supplies both channels. The ripple voltage filtering is done with C-R-C filter, which is inferior to C-L-C filtering (which was subsequently introduced by Leak on the later Stereo 60). Presumably this was a cost-cutting measure by Leak, and possibly a lack of will to get the most power from the circuit as possible. The series resistance of 100 Ohms has about 25 Volts drop accross it, and so disappates about 6 or 7 Watts. The resistor is positioned above the chassis to disappate the heat (see the central white tube in the photos). These resistors were made by "Standees", and frequently burn-out. --------------------------------------------- http://home.mira.net/~kiewavly/leakStereo50.html ![]() |

[#5401] Leak Stereo 50 Vs Stereo 60 Gingers, Is the one with Hovland caps yours? How does it sound compare with those with TCC? I personally like Hovland caps very much. They sound not too warm, not too lean, not too fast, not too slow. |
