They are all different. McIndosh is fleshly and thick sounded, quite powerful. Luxman is silkily smooth, sound gentle and relaxing, but least powerful. Naim is very sweet in mid and trasparent, comparatively more lifely than previous two, good in micro-dynamics.

If you want McIntosh sound, then you can only get it from McIntosh. For 3D and transparent sound, I think Mark Levinson is very good. How about Mark preamp + McIntosh power amp? But try to get older model McIntosh, the new models do not have the sweet sound anymore.

Hello apprentice:

Mark Levinson preamp + McIntosh power amp is a very good choice, but due to my limit budget, what about the first step to get a McIntosh MA6900, after I save more $, buy a Mark Levinson preamp and use my MC MA6900 as Power amp, then finally change my MA6900 to a pure McIntosh power amp? So, my question is:

1) If I use Mark Levinson preamp + McIntosh MA6900 (Only for Power amp), does the sound character has big difference compare to use the MA6900 only as integrated amp?

2) Which older model McIntosh you are recommend (not super expensive model) ? Is it still in production ?

I guess your upgrade path is ok, but personally, I prefer making as few trades as possible, since I have to give discount each time when selling gear. Regarding the sound, I haven't seen a Mark + Mac combo before, but some shop owners told me the preamp decide the sound, so it would mostly be accurate + 3D sound. But inside the soundstage drafted out by Mark, the texture inside would be a bit softer and sweeter like a Mac. Of course it would be better if you can listen to this combo at least once to decide (2nd hand shop).

The older models I remembered are all integrated, MA-6900, MA-6500. However, I listened once to a Mac power amp in same shop (not in HK), that gives out similar sweet sound, so do search for Mac power amps from 4 to 5 years ago.

MBL7008 is thinner sound than 6900 but it is still musical!

I think MBL 7008 is much more expensive than MA6900.

Net price:
MA6900 = $3XK
7008 = $4XK

Also, MBL is more diffcult to find a speaker to match than MC

Again, my personal opinion, if I use Jeff Rowland preamp (let's say, Coherence), I'll get JR power amp as well, and not mix other power amp. JR has a very distinct clean, transparent sound that you don't want to add anything else to change it. If you add a Mac to it, then you risk reducing the attraction of JR. But your suggestion is very interesting, and I haven't heard such a combination yet.
