the original mat using seems to be not giving enough focus, and too much static very time to take off the vinyl record, why any possible cuase?
I had a chance listen LP12 with a goldmund mat, it does a good focus and tighen the bass and bigger sounds stage, quite impressive.

Silver clamp
------------------------------------------------
it's because so many mat(made by plastic) can do better than original mat in good focus and tighten the bass and bigger sounds stage. Not only Goldmund mat.
May be I already have good focus and tighten the bass and bigger sounds stage when I use it(original).

The Funk Achromat Turntable Mat is far superior than the original Linn felt mat and the Sound Dead Steel Isoplatmat is even better but also more expensive. Here are two reviews of the Sound Dead Steel Isoplatmat :-

Thanks kcc123 for the links. It seems that the SDS Isoplatmat is pretty heavy for its metal construction. I have reservation using it with the LP12 because of the weight levied on the 3 suspension springs. Anyway, it could be my worry only. The mat I am using is an odd piece of foam plastic dating back to 15 years age. I really can't remember what its make was nor the product name but it works better than the original Linn mat in better reproduction of both extensions as well as more lively response. I am open minded regarding the use of mats because I am not biased to Linn gospel and eager to try what is best for my listening taste.

Dear taimonsing

A new set including

Lingo and circus Linn L12
EKOS ARM
Archiv cartridge
Linto phono

will set you around HK120K.

If you want the flagships EKOS SE version and changing the original chassis to their latest keel chassis, I guess the price will go up to around $160K.

This will keep you happy for a long time until you sold the combo for similar amount or higher in the future.

You may enquire the latest price from the dealer, Precision Audio.

Dear TK,

Don't add clamp and other made MAT. You would likely damage your circus bearing tip by adding weight as seriously warned by Linn's engineers and alternate the accurate Linn's sound using other MAT.

Unless you are looking for fun, the accurate LP12 sound cannot be achieved by mix and match. If you are available, please give me a call about servicing your LP12.

Don't fool by its cheap look, your LP12 is a finest piece of engineering. The system must be suffering problem or improper setup if needing gadget and extra accessory.

dkyuu Hing,

"will set you around HK120K" = HKD120,000 ???

If this is real price, then it's only a dream for me.

Thanks

Dear Taimonsing,

I am sorry you are reading the figures correctly.

Start buying one component one after one like me.
The new one sounds much better and more accurate than the aged ones in my opinion. Otherwise, you may most probably end up buying a lemon in the confused LP12's second hand market.

If you still preferred to second hand, get one with serial number higher than 91000 (year 1992 or after) for reason of its fitted circus bearing as standard. Add a no-play Ittok arm plus a low mileage Linn MC will fit the bill well. It would be the best if you could get somebody who is experinced to check the bearing tip (the most failing part I envisaged in the used market) and test the arm bearing for you.

Please allow me to remind replacing its bearing oil, suspension springs and drive belt before your set up. Buy or borrow a Linn template for proper cartridge alignment.

Have fun. A properly working and set up LP12 won't let you down.

The stainless steel version of the SDS Isoplatmat is quite heavy that I also have doubts about using it for the Linn. But the aluminium version is much lighter which can be fitted to the LP12 without upsetting the suspension too much. At the moment there is not any dealer in Hong Kong and the Isoplatmats can only be bought from England by mail order and will be refunded if you are not satisfy.
As regarding to the Linn turntables, the beauty of them is they are always upgradeable, no matter how old your turntables are. One can buy an old model and upgrade it up to date when necessary depends on your financial situation, so it is no need to buy it brand new if your present budget is tight. Of course, by all means buying it new if you have a deep enough pocket.

Dear all,

Allow me to share more opinion.

Yes, one can put individual upgrade progressively to any aged LP12 but unfortunately one can never upgrade the old ones (early 90s or before) to the latest spec. For instance, numerous upgrade were made to the reinforce the metal chassis and wooden plinth each year, new screws were used between the top plate and suspension and the use of new glue for the chassis bonding etc.

Linn only released their major upgrades to public. However, every single upgrade even minor ones counts and I am afraid the older wooden LP12 framework (say early 90s or before) and metal chassis will never be transformed to the latest spec.

I'd spent 20 odd years with LP12 and I bought my 4th LP12, a new one in late 2004, to replace the aged one. Despite latest new components were added to my old one, it could never be tuned to good working condition probably due to its age. The wood will deform following time span and change of humidity and temperature. Afterall, turtable is mechanic, it's all about precision, not vintage.

I ended up buying a new one to avoid further frustration.

The new one sounds more accurate than my previous LP12. IMO, if budget is not an issue, I would always consider the latest LP12 to be a best buy under $200K turntable bracket

If budget become a concern, a second hand will still outperform most competitors but please don't expect it to perform close to its latest successors.

Just my own opinion. Have fun. Vinyl forever.

Dennis,

It would be high time for you to hold such an OLD vs. NEW LP12 comparison party to let your claim validly said again and again. I guess it is a piece of cake for you to host such a party.

:)
