hi Royal hing & cryingfreeman hing,
For dbPowerAmp or RIP in Mac, they can handle DVD-ROM with and Without C2 error reporting. and still can rip the audioCD in the most proper manner.
We can ask the dbPowerAMp to detect the DVD-ROM drive is it possible to detect c2 error, dbpoweramp will ask you to rip a CD which you use marker to cover part of the CD surface. then , their MUST BE c2 error, and the C2 error IS NOT RECORVERABLE . then dbPowerAmp will know your dvd-rom drive can report c2 error or not.
however, no matter it got c2 error reporting OR NOT. dbPowerAmp will still compare each captured bit for 2-3 times (you can set the least identical times in option menu)
I set try max. 100times for each bit for an CD and captured bits must be continuously 3 times IDENTICAL before it confirm that particular captured data is REAL and can be confirmed.
as it compared the bit in higher level Memory basis rather than using dvd-rom drive cache or C2 error reporting scheme, so either a rom got C2 reporting function will NOT affect the dbPoweramp result and function.
It read the captured data and compare in windows Memory area.
Actually, the RIP software in MasOS also using the same scheme in order to make sure the ripped data is correct , and other than compare 3 different samples. Both RIP and dbpoweramp also use AccurateRIP to report the data to the central database. To see is the RIPPED data (in track by track level) is identical to others' information when ripping the same AudioCD (same isdn #).
so, dbpoweramp can use or does not use rom drive's C2 reporting scheme and more important it uses memory to compare 3 or 4 times (value you can set in the option menu).
that is the scheme of dbpoweramp, the only times dbpoweramp GUESS the value of that particular bit (error correction kick off) is when he try read 100 times and STILL CANNOT certain what THAT bit should be (NO 3 times identical).
so, dbpoweramp is one of the best ripping software is because they don't care your rom drive quality and they compare it bit by bit in memory level.
hope my explanation is understandable and you can guess what I mean.

Hi blau. vol,
Just a bit of sharing. In fact I have over 10 DVD/BD drives at home. Even with dBPoweramp's multiple comparsion enabled, it still sounds differently (in a small delta). The file size is also different.
My personal conclusion is retrying 100 times is still useless, given you're using the same drive with weaker C1/C2 EC. Remember a few yrs ago there was some popular "anti-pirate" technology released by Sony Music and Universal Music? They work by introducing extra C1/C2 noise into the disc to "fool" the computer use optical drives. Some drives manage to get through these "protections" as they have better C1/C2 handling algorithms that close to CDP.
Hi Royal hing,
My experience sharing, I tried to rip the same NEWLY Bought Dave Brubeck Time Out CD in different computer(of course with different brands dvd-rom/blu ray drives.
All 3 computers using 3 different dvd-rom drives, 1 is Lite On , 1 is Pioneer, 1 is MacBook Pro.
All 3 rom drives set-off value is calibrated with AccurateRIP key disc. when I rip the same TimeOut disc in 3 different computers , THE wave files is identical. that is my experience with NEWLY boughht AudioCD.
For your info, all 3 dvd-rom drives got C2 reporting feature.
For a new bought AudioCD , as I said , normaly there is NO scratch, normally , they will read smoothly. NO C2 reporting kick in. You may set the dbPowerAmp or RIP software to try max 60 times or 100times, BUT if you have first 3 times data identical , you will never need to try 60 or 100times.
Have c2 reporting , that mean the dvd-rom drive believe the read data got some problem, and ask you to determine should I try or NOT to try again.
However, for dbPowerAmp, even that particular block does NOT report there is C2 error from dvd-rom drive, he still compare this block with previously read version to double check.
I remember there was 1 sharing by Kent Poon , he ripped 1 audio CD with different software in Mac, the wave files is NOT the same in size (as the dvdrom drive set off value is NOT input in the ripping software), however, when he align the set-off value in Audio Editing software, they ALL sound the same. How he know, he inverse 1 files polarity and play 2 files together. the OUTPUT GAIN is always 0dB (1 files setoff the others).
so, for a audioCD with NO scratch or nearly no scratch, there is C2 error reported. so, the audioCD will be the same.
for audioCD with scratch , C2 error will be reported, and there may be change Error Correction kick in and start to guess.
I installed dbpoweramp today at the 4th commputer and calibrated the setoff value with a AccurateRIP Key Disc.
I ripped a Linda Ronsdadt Simple Drames CD again today at the newly setup PC. the wave file got the same file size (exactly the same number of byte with the wave file I ripped 6 months ago.
The bluray-rom support C2 reporting function. The Audio CD got almost NO scratch.
What is the reason behind?

如果部CD ROM 純粹讀取file（rip CD），基本上部部都可以做到。暫時又唔覺得有邊部cheap cheap地嘅CD ROM讀左個file出嚟但係實際開唔到。
