[#1] Best books about HiFi - compling a list? In the realm of hifi, $ gives you a considerable amount of power to achieve good sound. But knowledge is no less important ... I find it very interesting to read books about hifi and learn a lot from this. Science about hifi / audio can't explain everything we hear and like regarding music production and reproduction, yet in the past 30 years scientific research in this area has progressed a lot and I can't imagine audiophiles can achieve good quality playback without knowing the relevant knowledge. I am just a beginner in this area, so am wondering it may be interesting to know what others are reading. Could someone post their favorite reads here and briefly explain the reasons behind their choice? Or what you learned from reading your chosen books? I hope such sharing would be fruitful ...

[#3] Best books about HiFi - compling a list? I haven't finished the whole book, but just some chapters relevant to my concern now. Before, I have read many 'web info' about room acoustics, and learned many 'wisdom' or 'rules' or 'principles' from this. Some like - putting 'wool' carpets or use heavy drapes to curb trebles instead of light materials. But these opinions contradict. Some say one must uses wool since it's natural, some just say 'heavy' materials. How do those 'wisdoms' or 'principles' come from? How do we understand these contradictory opinions? I think this book provides a window, laying out the scientific research world of room acoustics. For example, contrary to many wisdoms on the web, it suggests that heavy Cotton drapes/curtains are also good sound absorbers (of course it's different from velvet but still not as bad as some may have thought). It talks about how absorption coefficients are measured, how and why different ways of positionings achieve different effects (like spacing away from walls). And very important of all - it admits knowledge about audio is still progressing, and it particularly highlight areas that we don't know much about or bound to be with contradictory opinions - the never-will-be-resolved question of how much reverberation time we needed for a particular type of music is highlighted. The subjective realm of our preference for hifi must be acknowledged. The explanations about how to calculate the average room reverberation time is extremely good, probably the best I have read. With this, you can achieve good estimate of the reverberation time of your room and decide what areas and frequencies needed to be treated through CALCULATION and not by guess.

[#4] Best books about HiFi - compling a list? This book can be browsed with limitations from Amazon and Google. It's less than $28 dollars in amazon, for a book with over 600 pages and excellent summary of existing knowledge about room acoustics. Like every book, there're rooms for improvement. But what it achieves is excellent already ... What I need is the patience and time to digest the knowledge and apply them .... Here is the Table of Contents: Overview The goal of this book is to apply the principles of acoustics to the audio arts. This involves serving as an interpreter of major trends and the literature for students and practitioners in the audio field. Along with covering the more theoretical aspects of acoustics, the book applies the theory to the design of specialized audio spaces such as the home listening room, the control room, and the multi-track-recording studio. Table of contents 1. Fundamentals of Sound 2. Sound Levels and the Decibel 3. The Ear and the Perception of Sound 4. Sound Waves in the Free Field 5. Speech, Music, and Noise 6. Analog and Digital Signal Processing 7. Reverberation 8. Control of Interfering Noise 9. Absorption of Sound 10. Reflection of Sound 11. Diffraction of Sound 12. Refraction of Sound 13. The creator of numerous technical innovations, and the author of scores of books and scholarly papers, he has been a leader in television engineering, sound recording, motion pictures, radio, and multimedia. A co-founder and director of the Science Film Production division of the Moody Institute of Science, he was also a section chief of the Subsea Sound Research section of the University of California. An educator who has taught at several leading institutions, he has consulted on acoustics to numerous industries for nearly 30 years. Having touched many of the technical highlights of the 20th century, he celebrated his 90th birthday in 1999. He and his wife live in Santa Barbara, California. Back cover copy *2 complete chapters on acoustical software solutions *Full chapter on acoustical measurements and calculations*Added guidance on small recording and voice-over studios No one can touch the Master ...No other book even comes close to legendary acoustical scientist F. Alton Everest's Master Handbook of Acoustics for a friendly, practice-oriented tour of acoustical principles. This readable yet authoritative guide tenderizes a tough subject so that audio buffs can apply leading-edge acoustical thought and design in their own home recording studios and listening rooms.Keeping his target audience of hobbyists, electronics enthusiasts, and audiophiles always in mind, the author makes the science of sound interesting and understandable. Only someone who understands acoustics as well as Everest – Senior Member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, the Acoustical Society of America, and the IEEE -- could explain these principles so simply, informally, and with such relevance to home projects. Short on mathematical derivations and long on easy-reading translations of difficult technical subjects, F. Alton Everest's Master Handbook of Acoustics is a rewarding piece of prose that can help you elevate any audio project to a higher standard. An inexhaustible source of ideas, inspiration, and techniques, it's a classic work that every audiophile wants to own. This book is a true keeper. TURN SCIENCE INTO ART For the ultimate in custom sound For those who love electronics and high-end listening and recording, this book is the key to the kingdom, unlocking the theory that lets you: *Achieve professional recording results at home *Customize the perfect listening chamber *Build an audio/video tech room for state-of-the-art voice-over recording*Create "quiet air" in your home recording studio *Modify sound with adjustable acoustics *Control reverberation, interference, and just plain noiseControl distortion in the air medium itself WITH CONTRIBUTIONS FROM--Geoff Goacher, Acoustical Research AssociatesPeter D'Antonio, President & CEO, RPG Diffusor Systems

[#14] Best books about HiFi - compling a list? Go on about the Master Handbook. Try posting some passages I found particularly illuminating here. These messages in the book cover topics also covered in many websites and books, but are to my view offer the clearest explanation and the most comprehensive and understandable info. The following pics are extracted from the book. Some are very familar, but some not (on the web). ![]()

[#15] Best books about HiFi - compling a list? This pic is about a research that differentiates how human perceive early reflections as a function of the delayed time and frequency. I found it very informative as a guidleline. Writers on the web often talks similar things in mundane language, which is good for 'introducing' us the ideas, but in the book this topic is elaborated through scientific research findings. The chart is well-presented. ![]()

[#16] Best books about HiFi - compling a list? This is an excellent table. We can do the same to our setting. Very soon we'll discover how serious the early reflections in most home are since the calculations based on the book is a room larger than many of our living rooms ... so ... Many taiwan writers suggest that the back of the speakers doesn't need absorption if it's placed like 3 or 4 ft away from the wall. The rationale is that they are quite delay. Doing the maths will question this practise. The law of reflection won't be changed by our will ... ![]()

[#19] Best books about HiFi - compling a list? vt75 hing, it sounds like a good book "This is a book both broad and deep, drawing from the diverse worlds of classical, jazz, rock, pop, blues, country, folk, musicals, hip-hop, world, opera, soundtracks, and more. It's arranged alphabetically by artist to create the kind of unexpected juxtapositions that break down genre bias and broaden listeners’ horizons— it makes every listener a seeker, actively pursuing new artists and new sounds, and reconfirming the greatness of the classics. Flanking J. S. Bach and his six entries, for example, are the little-known R&B singer Baby Huey and the '80s Rastafarian hard-core punk band Bad Brains. Farther down the list: The Band, Samuel Barber, Cecelia Bartoli, Count Basie, and Afropop star Waldemer Bastos." Is the book oriented towards 'good recording'? maybe it's music oriented rather than audiophile oriented. Nothing derogatory, many CDs I like are good music but bad recording :(
