All depends on the receiving circuit. It can be either way. If properly designed, coax will win.

This may not be relevant. Optics (SPDIF) >>> AES/EBU >>>RCA (SPDIF). This is from noise isolation standpoint. Sound wise, at least I cannot tell any difference between optical and AES. CD player is OK. But if yours is blu-ray player which is connected to a TV which creates huge noises, then, absolutely no RCA cable between blu-ray to DAC. You may not be able to hear the noises but you can certainly feel them because your can tell the sound is quite annoying.

#9 But optical come with latency between electric to light convertion and light to electric convertion, it may cause the relative latency distortion,so if the distance is not longer than 100m, then XLR would be much better than optic fiber. Fiber is only for either if your distance is longer than 100m or long distance but no any balanced digital connections available.

>> But optical come with latency between electric to light convertion and light to electric convertion, it may cause the relative latency distortion Wrong. It is not latency. It is the problem with signal dispersion on the Toslink interface. Some Toslink transmitters have 40% lower signal dispersion than other Toslink transmitters. If you use glass fiber with high strand counts, it will make the transmission closer to single mode transmission and hence there is less jitter introduced into the signals being transmitted. In this case, Toslink can be made better than AES or coax. But if you have the right coax interface (transmitter with high return loss), cables with tight 75 ohm impedance and low dispersion, coax still wins.

Some dac now support i2s interface. Once u tried i2s , u won't go back to spdif , aes or toslink. But u need to match the i2s interface standard. There are a few different i2s standards in the market.

In ordinary equipment with AES/EBU, SPDIF and Toslink ports, AES/EBU provides the highest quality connection due to its high signal level and hence high S/N ratio; balance nature and therefore immune to ground noise and RF/EMI. SPDIF is second best, its signal level is low (0.5V only) and reference to common ground which can be very noisy. Toslink is not suitable for any high quality audio usage due to its low quality transmitter / receiver and narrow bandwidth. Don't confuse Toslink with ST optical, ST optical uses much better quality transmitter and offer much better connection quality. Certainly it is just a generalisation. You may find a equipment with special quality SPDIF that better its AES port, but it is extremely rare

The reality is that most audio designers are clueless about high speed digital signal transmissions. They think just put a RCA connector to the PCB, add a pulse transformer and terminate the secondary side of the pulse transformer with a 75 ohm resistor will get you a perfect signal transfer. The truth is far from the above. In order to transmit a high speed digital signal from one place to another with minimal signal reflections and transmission induced jitter, you need an expert in RF engineering. Not many top RF engineers are audio designers. This is why 99.99% of the SPDIF receiver circuits are not designed properly. Not only that, very few BNC connectors have true 75 ohm impedance. The right ones have no signal reflections as seen on a TDR machine (Time Domain Reflectometry) . So far I only know two, one made by Trompeter (they do military electronics) and one particular Amphenol BNC connector. The rest are pretty much prone to signal reflections without tight 75 ohm impedance. Why is signal reflection important? The reflected signal causes an incorrect decision point to be captured by the receiver circuit. Meaning the transition from 0 to 1 is not at the precise moment. This imprecise moment becomes jitter in the transmission. The worse the signal reflections, the worst the jitter is induced to the receiver circuit. No wonder why it is so difficult to get SPDIF transmission right. AES connector has even more problems than BNC connector in terms of getting precise impedance. The differential signaling does have some advantages. But if coax is done right, it WILL be the best interface of all due to the nature of the connector design. Ever wonder why the cable companies use coax cable instead of twisted pair? Coax is able to support higher bandwidth in which twisted pair will have more difficulties achieving. Or ever wonder why an oscilloscope uses coax inputs and not twisted pair? As for Toslink. If you have the Toslink TX177 and RX177 transmitter/receiver, they will sound better than most AES or coax implementations. The 177 units have very low signal dispersion. When used with high strand count glass Toslink cable such as the one from Lifatec, Toslink will beat most AES/coax implementations. Also, TX/RX177 are capable of 24/192K transmission rates, even the specs said they can do at most 24/96K. I know because I'm using TX/RX177 in my system :)

HDMI calbe is a coaxial cable, however, it is hard to have a 10m calbe without loss. But, if you use a terminal convecter (HDMI to CAT5x2) then this cable can up to 60m and its video is no problem. Actually LAN wire CAT5 is several pairs of twisted wire. Regarding XLR, it is mainly delevloped for recording industry (long long mic cable....). It can't make sure + & - signal level are really 100% equal (source and gain of amp). For home use, normally the cable length is very short. For my system, I use Toslink since I had compared it with coaxial cable many many time before fixing it. My DAC is used battery supply so there is no leakage current (noise) throught the ground connection. By the way, you should try it one by one and then select the best one for your system.

#17 is very well explained the truth. However, TX177 and RX177 transmitter/receiver is rarely can be found in most CD transport and DAC. By the way, peoples always confused with the digital signal output from a CDT with balance signal transfer between DAC/preamp/poweramp. Although AES/EBU digital output(110 ohms) uses the same Cannon XLR connector, digital signal is only a high frequency streaming signal but not 2 identical but inverted +/- balanced audio signal which gets the benefits of better signal to noise ratio and dynamic due to "common mode noise cancellation", independent signal grounding and higher signal level transfer.
