[#6] Read: To whom constructs shield power code While searching for answers over the past few days, I came up with a thought. If there is need to protect the signal (large) within the power code from outside EMF, I can just put up some grounded wires (i.e., act as antennas) around the power systems. Those should take care a bulk of the interferences. Also, since the ac-7000 is twisted inside, it already has mechanisms to minimise the built up of capacitance within the structure... As a result, I do not need to really concern about whether to ground the shield or not. Silly me :) |

[#5] Read: To whom constructs shield power code I think "ground" means "ground" too. Just hope tht the personnel from SAEC has been thinking the same way:) |

[#3] Read: To whom constructs shield power code Here is my question to SAEC: I bought about 10 feet of AC-7000 power cable in Hong Kong. May I ask if there is a need to connect the shield (metal foil) to ground? If so, how do I do it, as there is no drain wire within the cable structure. Your advise on this is highly appreciated. |

[#2] Read: To whom constructs shield power code From the email, I think tht there is a possibility tht the personnel from SAEC (a japan company?) thought tht the "ground" you referred to was the "earth" (pin). Did u say explicitly tht u would like to know if the drain wire can be connected to the ground box (instead of just saying "ground")? Sometimes misunderstanding may be due to translation. |

[#1] Read: To whom constructs shield power code First of all, I am a new comer to hifi but I have keen interest in electrical science (for over a few decades). I am also formally educated in electrical and electronics engineering although I have never worked in the field. Recently, I am constructing my own power code using SAEC cables (AC7000), which has a copper foil shield but no drain wire. For some time, I was wondering whether there is a need to connect the shield to ground (which sounds logical to me). I have also searched a number of forums for an answer. At the same time, however, I was thinking that, if there is a need to ground the shield, SAEC must have provided a drain wire, and that there must be a reason not having one. A few days ago, I was thinking perhaps I should write to SAEC in the hope that they will reply my email. Surprisingly, they did reply, as follows: --- Thank you for your inquiry for SAEC AC-7000 power cable. As to your question, different from the inter-connect cables, the shield in the power cable has to be isolated from the ground in view point of the electric safety. Please do not connect the shield (metal foil and copper) to the ground in this case. If you or your user have some more questions, feel free to ask me at any time. Thank you for choosing SAEC cable. Best regards, Junichi John Tanaka General Manager Overseas Division Saec Commerce Co., Ltd. --- I am not here to argue whether it is technically right or wrong not to ground the shield, and whether the system sounds better one way or another. I am just sharing what SAEC says about their cable. For me, I will definitely follow SAEC's instruction, as they should be more knowledgable than me regarding their products. I am sure that there are other shielded power code without drain wire. For those who are using such cables, please take SAEC's note into consideration. Happy listening. |
