[#21] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) About the sound quality of different OS: MacOS > Linux > Vista > XP SPDIF has more jitters because of the async. clock. I2S has much less jitters because of a separated clock. As I know, only Wavelength & USB Monica are using I2S. While Wavelength is very expensive so I bought two USB Monica's. |

[#22] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) "MacOS > Linux > Vista > XP" There are many factors influencing the audio performance. I don't know how to make any conclusion as above. e.g. for the same OS (XP), the performance of cPlay is far better than foobar or Windows media player. But cPlay is not available on MacOS. I had one experience with MacBook vs PC (not eeePC). PC was running XP foobar 0.8.x & ASIO4ALL and MacBook was running itune (forgot the version). In that case, PC running XP won the Macbook. It is hard to have apple to apple comparison. I don't think there is conclusion on the OS audio performance. |

I think we can add Benchmark DAC1 in the list of USB DAC which convert to I2S directly. "The USB signal is first converted to I2S, maintaining its original sample-rate. I2S is a fundamental form of digital audio. When an AES/EBU or S/PDIF signal is streamed to the DAC1 via XLR/coax/optical, it is also first converted to I2S at its original sample-rate." Elias Gwinn, Engineer of Benchmark Media Systems. http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f46/benchmark-dac1-now-available-usb-223006/index28.html The Empirical Audio Spoiler Tube DAC is another DAC which convert USB to I2S directly. http://www.empiricalaudio.com/frSpoiler.html In this case, at least 4 DAC manufacturers take proper approach to handle USB direct convert. - Wavelength DAC - Benchmark DAC1 - USB Monica - Empirical Audio Spoiler DAC |

[#25] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) 如果廠商用PCM2706用I2S interface 出去DAC Chip都一樣可以避了SPDIF. |

[#26] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) Hello GY2004 The easiest way to use Apple Mac as CAS is to use iTunes as the player and connect your Mac to a USB DAC. Then go to System Preference -> sound and select "Output" tab, you can see a new output device something like "USB DAC". Select it and now signal will direct to your USB DAC. If you don't have DAC with USB input but with optical output, buy a special apdator that you can plug in your mac audio ouput and then connect a optical cable between your mac and the optical input of your DAC. You should use Apple lossless codec if you import your songs into iTunes as some suggests it provide the best quality. |

[#27] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) 我有eeePC 1000,有E-MU 0404 USB DAC. |

[#28] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) rainy-night: Why you don't use external CD ROM, the most easy way to solve your problem. Buy a USB to SATA/IDE cable, then can use any OLD CD ROM at home to do the job. |

[#33] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) zbigniew821, glad to hear that you have bought eeepc 901. i have bought the same and its performance is really much better than my old compag notebook. the background is very quiet, dynamic improved with more details and better sound stage. i have also upgrade RAM in eeepc to 2G so that i can load the whole disk to RAM. in my case, the performance of cplay is significantly better than foobar 0.9.x version in all aspects. for new cpu like atom in eeepc, we can use cplay SSSE version which can further improve the density of sound. my setup now is as follows:- eeepc 901 (optics USB extender + TOD1) Benchmark DAC1 USB (Belden 1812) Cayin A-100T int amp (Belden 5000UP) Harbeth SHL5 independent power supply (Pirelli 4mm) generic Pirelli 1mm cables as power cords for all machines |

[#34] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) Kongkong, I have yet to find the super difference between cplay and foobar2000, let alone the cMP system tweak. I'll try later. You have a great system and mine is super-vintage and extremely cheap! It has been with me for years and the next should be speaker upgrade. But as I always believe, I prefer to enjoy music rather than forever upgrade and being too picky and lost the fun of enjoying music. :P Yes, ATOM, SSD and eeepc is a classic product in the sense it renovate the way notebook can be. The super low power consumption is incredible to me. It only consumes 8 to 9W during using foobar, with USB DAC and 2.5 HD attached. I read the PCM magazine of this week and even on idle our core 2 processor consumes sth like over 80W and can run up to 200W or more. I hope ATOM or later netbook processors won't go the wrong direction - SSD remain one choice, and low-power consumption processors will remain available with no performance sacrificed. |

[#35] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) a rather tiresome question from me after reading the suggestion from brothers here.. My question is...does Foobar transfer music files like Flac to ram first and use that as buffer to play in order to lower jitter? If yes, is this an automatic feature or need a lot of programming? If no, then what other application can do this? I asked because I know that a few very expensive cd ripper/disc spinner such as Boulder and the up and coming PS Audio (discussed in the cd ripper thread) does use ram as buffer to lower jitter. |

[#36] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) I'm using foobar 0.8.3 version. You only need to set a large buffer side. e.g. 200MB. For any sound file smaller than 200MB, it will be loaded to memory first. Then play. No programming needed. cPlay will do the same. No programming needed. Of course. |

[#37] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) welborne hing, Yes, I forgot to mention in the email! But as mentioned in the other thread, current version of foobar2000 still allows you to do that, but the feature in 0.83 version is easy to see (if my memory serves me right), but in 0.9.x version this feature is 'buried'. Go File --> Preference --> Advance --> Playback, then you will see sth like playing buffer. Enter a value you like. As 3zone hing said, 200MB = 200*1024kb there. You can set a larger buffer. But as drcy hing said, foobar200 only loaded one file at a time. cPlay can loaded many files in advance (so many like the idea of loading the entire album before playing). cPlay actually have a very simple interface which is both good (simple) and bad (too simple) :P There is also a thingy called cMP, which is used to 'overtake' xp when playing music. But I think you can just remember the name first and played it later! |

[#38] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) There's one roundabout way to play the entire ablum by foobar2000. One can use the programme RAMDISK to create a drive if you have enough RAM, like more than 1.5GB. Create a 750M / 800MB RAM drive by that programme. Then drag the entire album to that RAM drive created (actually is in the RAM). Then use foobar to play those songs in the RAM. It's an indirect way though! |

[#39] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) Sorry, all big brother, I want to use my eeePC to connect my Benchmark DAC1. I am computer idiot, can someone teach me once again, how to play the music from my eeePC thru the DAC? Which program and how? I download Foobar 2000 but was asked to have the driver???? |

[#40] eeePC & USB DAC - Computer As Source (CAS) download asio4all http://www.asio4all.com/ Select Benchmark DAC1 USB as the audio device. You may try cPlay instead of foobar. http://sourceforge.net/projects/cplay If you set up asio4all correctly. It will show Benchmark DAC1 as output device. Good luck. |
