One possible cause is due to high humidity with water drop on the surface and then dry up by A/C or just naturally. The impurity and mineral from those water got thru the wax/finish into the wood. This cycle went on multiple times and started to damage the wood. Similar often found on hard wood floor under refrigerator and washing machine in old home.

You could try use steel wood (0000) to lightly bluff the surface and than wax it well and see if you can fix it. If not, it will take a good refinish work to restore, refinish consist of sanding, wax & finish removal, reseal, bluff and wax. Nothing hard, just time. Be careful, most speakers wood finish are just a very thin 1/16 or 1/32 wood skin, any sanding can easily take it down especially around edges and corner, be careful and gentle.

In the future, when storing something away, use plastic bag (like big garbage bag) to wrap and put some of those pack that prevent humidity or soak up humidity.

Regarding wax, I recommend carnauba wax over bees wax for basic wax. There are many brands out there. When working with wax, you can slightly heat up the wax first, kind of like butter, when you warm up the butter, it's easier to spread on the bread. When you heat up the wax, it's soften and easier to rub it into the wood.

There is another high-end wax call Renaissance wax, it's quite expensive but it's a superb wax, outstanding protection.

Disclaimer: Some very high-end fever people might claim certain wax don't sounds good :-)
