I only like DAC from the early 90s. Anything new and current is not my cup of tea regardless of price.

For those that think DAC is about computer calculations, why not go listen and verify if this is true an draw your own conclusion.

用新chips新技術的"今天幾千蚊的新秀" & 陳年DCS解碼器比，
就要比過先知。

理論上是新的chips特性比較優良，
但理論歸理論，換個馬力大個波子的engine落部civil度跑macau
是快唔過陳年波子的。

beware those trying to tell u old dacs are good is because they want to sell those museum items at a better price.

take extreme care.

u can always take a hi rez file and down convert to 16/44 play thru an old dac and compare with new dac which can handle native hi rez files.

to me there is no comparison.

Hmm, I have no DACs to sell.

Actually, thinking new dacs are superior by default only means one did not spend enough time on dacs.

Newer modern DAC has higher resolution in general but this is actually a result of a tad more treble and more quiet background. To get lower noise floor, dynamics are usually compromised. Lacking dynamics also help give a smooth feeling. All these are market taste driven but not necessarily good for all people.

To me, the above reasons are why many new DACs seldom sound involving. Just ask yourself how often can you get suck into the music, instead of feeling like standing at the sideline "assessing" the so call sound quality when hearing some "modern" setups.

To some, the best hifi equipments are the one that don't yell "listen to me" and just let music flows naturally.

I am not trying to argue my taste is the standard. Instead, I hope friends here can listen to more and draw their own conclusion.

Thanks for the confirmation on reliability of the No36s dac , I bought a Audio Synthesis dax last year as you may see from another of my posts , unfortunately it developed a fault with the ultra-analog chip and upon returning it to the dealer it was confirmed it was non-repairable , got full refund so no problems . Shame because it was a lovely sounding unit! , although i was a bit unsure of the build quality as the buttons on the front panel were not very solidly fixed and very light to touch , first rate sound though and i miss it! i hope the Levinson No36s would be up to the audio Synthesis in the sonic department if so i would be a happy camper

粒 DAC chip 一有事成部機就報廢!!!

hing, please read the previous message again carefully.... The buyer is NOT complaining about Mark 36s but said that his Audio Synthesis dax bought previously could not be repaired.....

唔好人云亦云, 36或36S 都不是用ultra analog 的! 大口氣啲講，細佬我早已擁有所有Levinson's 的解碼。現貼上我的36S相片，請指出UA 的位置。 Wadia 的X64.4 真是一部很好的DAC 但真的很熱，我都有。但能給予一種很舒服的聲音。而現今的新的DAC大部份都只會令你很疲慮。簡單而說，現今的風氣是得不到們葡萄，大都是酸的。
