my friend sold the a50 and replaced by pass labs x600 class ab. he would not go back to the a50.

class a is good if one considers the heavier amp the better. so you pay for the heat sinks, chassis and higher electricity bill.

I am using an A-60, and I find that, compared to many other amps I have heard, it has much better delicacy and musicality. A less mechanical sound. Although the power rating is low, I also find that it sounds more powerful than my other amps (including a pair of 500W Rowland monoblocks) and controls my speakers better. Contrary to many stereotypical beliefs, it does not sound slow. In fact, I find that the "non-mechanicalness" comes from the fact that it reacts quickly to delicate sounds (such as ambiance and decay) and a general good sense of pace, rhythm and timing.

For the technical benefits of class A, I think I should leave it to wikipedia and other info sites out there.

However, I don't think one can "generalize" whether Class A is better or not. There are so many ways to design hifi and one feature alone cannot guarantee good sound.

The bad thing is definitely the waste of energy. The amp is pretty warm even at idle. However, of many class A amps I have seen, Accuphase seems less hot already. If the amp is sitting on the floor and you are wearing shorts :), you can feel the warmth if you are walking by even about 8 inches away. I can keep my hand on its heatsinks for a pretty long time without getting burnt. For a Krell FPB (which operates in Class A on a sliding bias basis), you can probably feel its heat about 1.5 feet away. The heat can be a problem if the heat dissipation measures or build quality is not too good. Parts can wear quicker. A few brands have stood through the test of time and are still producing Class A amps regularly, such as Accuphase, Sugden, Pass, to name a few.

Other than that, there is also the obviously electrity wastage (A60 uses 315W at idle) and related $ and environmental issues.

For me, despite all of these, I just couldn't resist the sound :)

Do you know what is the output power of accuphase A45 similar to normal class a/b amp? how do i know it suits my floorstand speakers which at 88db recommended 350 Watt amp?

The power rating should be basically as stated (i.e. 45W as stated into 8 ohms) from a measurement stand point. However, there are a few things worth noting. 1)They generally understate their rated power specifications and a few magazines have tested their amps to have power beyond the stated number. 2) Accuphase's class A series has the ability to double down on each halving of impedance down to very low impedance, hence the perceived ability to drive speakers. 3)For each of their class A amp, Accuphase has an equivalent level Class AB amp. For the A45, I believe it is the 4100. Driving ability should be somewhat similar (like A60 and 7100). You may want to check that out.
